Title: Anybody using Netscape ISP?
Post by: oboe on December 16, 2004, 02:55:25 PM
Thinking about cutting expenses and dropping my cable connection.   Anybody out there using Netscape ISP?

Can anybody tell me what exactly "Web Accelerator" is and how it works?    Is it compatible with playing Aces High?

Any other ISP people could recommend?    Anything cheaper than $10/month?

Thanks!

netzero  don't you catch the ads on tv?

both are basically dialup. all the "web-accelerator" does is use caches to help loadf pages a bit "faster".  you'll still be confined to the speed limit for dial ups, which is actually 33.4kps or so unless they bumped it up lately.  not to mention for AH it will also depend on your routing, which may or may not be as good as you have with cable, altho both use many of the same backbones.

Can't say for certain as I have not used dialup myself for 5 years. However I have heard that so called "accelerators" can seriously screw up a connect to AH.

Hopefully someone can give you better info than I.

web-accelerator is a ripoff. The only thing it does is to cache pages you have already viewed. It does nothing to speed up the initial loading.

I thought browsers actually did the cacheing of pages viewed?

They do thats whats funny.

Edit: Actually you can set it so the browser will not use the cache but get a fresh page every time.

Netscape's accelerator uses combination of compression, caching of already compressed content and filtering of unwanted content (adds, etc).

Some other accelerators are using host tables to speed up DNS lookups, some are simply proxy servers.

Some are combination of the above.

All methods speed up loading of webpages to some extent, some more some less.

Compression works on both static and dynamic content, caching methods are pretty useless with dynamic content. Proxies are generally trouble when it comes to authentication (online banking, etc), and Host tables are trouble too because of IP changes.

None will speed up mail, downloads, online gaming...

Netzero and netscape acceleration methods won't cause too many problems, while some others are nothing more than "scam".

My $0.02, stay with cable.

You would better stay out of this kind of ISP.
