Well if you were manuevering at the apex of your vertical climb, then that explains everything.

Control surfaces do induce drag...

When you went into a zoom, he could "cut the corner" also, by using less gee, he would carry more speed...
Which, no matter how u look at it, is exactly what he did.  He would not have flown straight ahead and then pulled up in the exact same place you did, he would likely have stayed in pure or lead pursuit, which means fewer gees pulled on his part.
Think about what you would have done, if the situation were reversed and you will see what I mean.

If he had less fuel and/or ammo, he would be able to hold himself at the apex of the stall a little longer than you would.

You need more speed for more weight to keep a plane flying..

The one thing...If you come from WB...the distance is in yards. In AH the distance is in feet. Yes, this sim is tuff....don't give up now.

Naudet,

Too bad you edited your question. That could have been helpful to others. I hope you find a flight sim that suits you. <S>

Ozark distance in AH is yards. Distance in WB is hundreds of yards.

AH 150 = WB 1.5 = 150yds
AH 2.5k = WB 25 = 2500yds

Naudet, I read you question before you edited it. Going vertical with with a con 600yds on your 6 is generally a bad idea unless you're positive you have a huge energy advantage. As you said, he was going about the same speed as you, so he will zoom up to the same height as you.

Another thing to keep in mind is that anyone following you will do pretty much the same manuevers as you, but start them several seconds after you.

As an example, if two equal planes with equal speeds enter a dive at exactly the same time, the distance between them will not change, as they will have the same speed at all times. But if the plane in back starts the dive a few seconds later the distance will increase, because the plane in front will be always be a little faster, due to his head start on the dive acceleration.

Now think about a zoom. Lets say you pull completely vertical. The guy behind you follows in pure pursuit (he always points his nose at you). So he will have a shallower pull up, and will be pointed pure vertical several seconds after you. So here, you have given yourself a head start on deceleration. Given the same initial speeds, you will both zoom to the same height, but he will get there a few seconds after you. And here's the important part. Because you had a head start on deceleration, at any given time he will be going faster than you. Which means he has more control.

I hope that makes sense.

Strange... For $14.95/mo, this is a whole lot of a better deal than FAII.

But to each their own.

naudet,
ALL of us have days where we experience extreme frustration with this sim.

At least everyone I've met so far does. Possible exception might be Teeerex, he fly's to have fun and damm if he doesn't every single sortie!

Once a con is 600 back anything you do other than fly straight & level will let him cut the corner & close distance. If you have better top speed then by all means RUN, and run flat. If you turn better, then you'd best be yankin & bankin. If you don't do either better then you'd best be praying!

I have no idea what Naudets question was, but from all the talk about distances and such, I asume it has got something to do with that.

Just to state my opinion, I think that the kills that happens, VERY often, above 500 yards is no fun and very unrealistic, sure you could shoot people down at those distances but it was HARD, the reasoin it happens so often in AH is because of those darn icons.
The Germans equpied planes, ME410 particulary with 50mm High velocity cannons to be able to shoot far with HE rounds and still give a VERY good punch with a 1 hit kill power for heavy bombers, they were suposed to do this from 500 yards and more, out of range from effective defencive power of the US heavy bombers, however, it didn't work because of diffuculties to hit at more then 500 yards.

The Fighter pilots were told to fire at 200 yards or bellow, both for better punch and because it was hard to hit at higher distances, same thing with the Allied pilots.

What is in AH I don't know, but I don't like constantly behing shot down at 500 yards and more, and it's not the "500 yards in my screen 300 in his" thing, I've asked people who have done it to me, and they've said about the same distance as I saw them from, I've done it my self from 800 yards and it's just not fun, something has to be fixed in AH IMO.

"the reasoin it happens so often"

Icons? sure. The real reason is we get to have thousands and thousands of sorties with each one engaging in combat where as in real life World War 2 piltos did not.

So in our 'virtual' world there are thousands upon thousands of Marsellailes and other expert shots.

And for those who say well a newby can get a kill too at long range? Sure. they spray and pray. They do not have to conserve ammo for the trip home, other bogies or to keep gun barrels from overheating.

Are the gunnery ballistics 100% perfect in AH (or AW or WB's) no. But I feel HTC does thier best to make it the finest and moost realistic.

The missing ingredients that NO online game wil have to make any combat REAL are death and maiming. Withouth those you're playing a game whether you like it or not. All the role playing, all the historical nonsense is a game - unless you can actually die or lose a limb. When you model that THEN you will have realistic combat.
OR you can do what a couple of other online games do. AW does not have collisions or ability for a HO. WB's and WW2O you have to get real close for the bullets to hurt. All artificial gameplay concessions.

I prefer it realistic. The more the better. Except give the death and maiming features to someone else.

I get more upset when TeeeRex dies than he does!

"Damn it!  They got Teee again!  Sorry, Teee, couldn't clear your 6 in time."
He replies "No problem, Brother Nifty!" in a happy and almost satisfied voice!

I'm getting tired of hearing the "no problem."   ;)  I wanna hear "Thanks for clearing my 6!"  :o

You know...  I think he likes getting shot down.   :D

Before this gets out of hand, it has absolutely nothing to do with icons or the gunnery model. Naudet's question was different. If he wants to put it back up he can, otherwise don't turn this thread into something about the gunnery model... again.
