Title: Will Someone Be My Pat Morita
Post by: DVDA on December 26, 2004, 03:43:39 AM
Will someone who knows how to fly the P-38 real well, be willing to teach me how to fly it.

I flew the P-38 my whole career in Air Warriors but I can not seem to get it down at all in Aces High, I lose control, cant hit a thing among other things while trying to fly it. I desperately need a tutor.

Thanks

P.S If your wondering and if you dont know Pat Morita is the dude from Karate Kid (The Master)

First learn stand, then learn fly. Nature rule, Daniel San, not mine.

DVDA,
I am not an elite 38 flyer, but I don't mind helping you out learning some things in it, email me at

TequilaChaser(at)flyaceshigh(dot)com

and we can set up a time to meet and work on it if you would like....

DVDA,
I rarely fly the 38 but over the years I've read  hundreds of posts about it. I suggest you do a BBS search and you'll find lots of threads on flying the 38, and a ton of AKAK's films to watch.

I think a few starting points will help you right away:

1) Turn of Combat Trim. Just fly with elevator trim in approximatley the middle of the indicator.

2) In a turn use 1 or 2 notches of flaps as soon as you are slow enough for them to engage. Be careful when you speed back up, the autoretract feature can cause weird aerodynamics when you aren't expecting it.

3) Go verticle when possible. Do slow loops that almost no one can follow.

4) Avoid high speed dives, otherwise compression will make you a lawn dart. Map your elevator trim to your stick so you can hit up elevator trim (usually in panic) when you break this rule. It might be enough to pull you out.

DVDA,

If you want some help with the P-38, just holler.  I do not fly as much as I used to but I can still be found 2-3 days during the week in the MA.  Usually at nights though, after 10pm due to my work schedule.

Uh oh, I'm a Rook. In that case:

1) Fly with Combat Trim and Stall Limiter Enabled at all times.

2) Never use flaps, or if you have too, click them all the way down full and engage Dive Flaps (Shift C).

3) Make all turns flat turns, P-38s are lousy in loops.

4) High Speed Power Dives are your best exit strategy, as close to straight down as possible with WEP engaged for maximum speed.
