People not responding to the posting of major disaster on the AH BBS means that Americans have a '**** the rest of the world attitude'?
I guess this makes you a half-step removed from Mother Theresa? You care so much that you post your sympathy to the AH BBS? I stand in awe. You Sir have truly gone the extra mile. I am sure those thirsty, shocked, starving, and sometimes injured people aren't going to give a damn about the supplies pouring into the region via U.S. military transport assets. But they'll have a warm glow inside knowing that some loser punk named 'spitfiremkv' defended them from 'American insensitivity' that existed only in his damaged mind by posting to an obscure BBS.
Get a life, retard.

What's the matter spit, panties in a bunch because no one flocked to your post?
WTF gives you the right to categorize an entire nation based on how they do or don't respond to you. Pretty self centered eh?
Ever consider the possibility that most noticed the author of the thread and that alone caused it's being ignored?

Pardon me for living in Michigan (6-8" of snow on the ground), pardon me for working this morning, pardon me for attending a family Xmas party, pardon my wife and I for going to our only motion picture of the year. Forgive us for having to pick up our son at my wife's in-laws. Now, go F yourself you self-rightous salamander. You want a cookie for being the "first one to post this"?
Now, it is tragedies like this that humans should meld together and forget by-gones. Tsunami's are no joke, and it had to be a large landslide. I'd give my xmas presents for a life saved.

I am kind of amazed by Tsunamis. Have never seen one in real life. They are so powerful, and could happen at any time.
-
What a disaster. 20'-30' wall of water I heard. Not sure if there was more than one?
I would be very surprised if the American Red Cross wasn't one of the first disaster relief organizations to get in there. That's one thing the U.S. is pretty good at.

Edited for accuracy: A rogue wave hit Daytona Beach in 1992.
"A wall of water as much as 18 feet high rose out of a calm sea and crashed ashore, smashing hundreds of vehicles parked on the beach and causing 75 minor injuries, officials and witnesses said.
"An undersea landslide apparently caused the 27-mile-long rogue wave late Friday night, a federal seismologist said yesterday."
-
very sad
didn't they have over two hours from the time the quake registered until the wave hit?

All that is needed is an Earthquake (as Nilsen said), an underwater slide (typically Basalt), or a landslide dropping into the water.
Here is an example of a smaller "megatsunami" that occurred on July 8th 1958, in Alaska. A 7.5(?) earthquake that involved so much rock and ice from a landslide nearby (the water could not displace it with enough rock and ice), generated a landslide within the inlet which produced a wave that washed out trees 200 meters above normal sea level. Comparison with previous photographs indicated that several hundred feet of ice had been removed from the front of a nearby glacier by a 520 meter high wave.
There is a controversial event that happened 110,000 years ago in Hawaii. A 1,600 foot tall wave hit Hawaii. The controversy is over whether or not that some Marine fossils were from the Megatsunami or from the growth of the island.
I had the death toll plateaus. It seems like every time I go online, it increases.

U.S. offers aid to quake victims; at least 3 Americans among dead
By Associated Press, 12/27/2004 06:36

WASHINGTON (AP) The U.S. government is offering to help Asian nations struck by a massive earthquake and devastating tsunamis that killed more than 20,000 people, including at least three Americans.
''The United States stands ready to offer all appropriate assistance to those nations most affected,'' White House deputy press secretary Trent Duffy said in a statement Sunday.
State Department spokesman Noel Clay said U.S. officials were working on ways to help. ''The United States will be very responsive,'' he said, offering no details on plans for relief and assistance.
Clay said three Americans were killed two in Sri Lanka, one in Thailand and a number of other Americans were injured. Clay did not have details or identities of the dead and injured.
The overall death toll climbed dramatically Monday, and many thousands more were missing, homeless or out of contact. Sri Lanka alone increased its estimates to more than 12,000 people killed.
President Bush expressed his condolences over the ''terrible loss of life and suffering,'' said the White House statement issued aboard Air Force One. Bush was traveling from Washington to Texas, where he was beginning a post-Christmas vacation at his Crawford ranch.
The 9.0 quake, the world's most powerful in 40 years, struck deep beneath the Indian Ocean, off the Indonesian island of Sumatra. That triggered tsunamis that sent 20-foot walls of water thousands of miles. Those crashed onto beaches in eight Asian countries, which also included Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar and Bangladesh, and in the African nation of Somalia more than 3,000 miles away.
White House officials said U.S. relief efforts already were under way to help people in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, a string of 1,192 coral atolls off the southwestern coast of India. They said the United States also will work with the United Nations, non-governmental organizations and other concerned states to provide relief.
''Certainly, our thoughts and prayers are with those families and loved ones who have experienced a loss of life,'' the officials said in the statement.
The State Department issued advisories warning Americans to avoid travel to Sri Lanka, the Maldives and the southwestern area of Thailand. U.S. citizens in those areas were encouraged to leave as soon as safe transportation was available.
BTW,
I have friends and business collegues in both Thailand and Sri Lanka. I'm sure they're comforted to know an obscure BBS is worried about them.

U.S. dispatches disaster teams to help quake victims
By Barry Schweid, Associated Press, 12/27/2004 13:43
ADVERTISEMENT
WASHINGTON (AP) The United States dispatched disaster specialists Monday and prepared an initial $15 million aid package to the Asian countries hit by a massive earthquake and tsunamis. U.S. officials were seeking to contact hundreds of Americans who remain unaccounted for in the region. most based tjhao;amd adam ereli
Secretary of State Colin Powell said eight Americans died in the natural disaster, and that embassy officials were trying to locate other U.S. citizens who have not been heard from since Sunday's quake.
''We will do everything we can to immediately help,'' Powell said. ''This is, indeed, an international tragedy.''
U.S. officials immediately sent $100,000 each to India, Indonesia, the Maldives and Sri Lanka, and planned to donate $4 million later Monday to help Red Cross disaster efforts, Powell said.
The initial U.S. aid package being crafted was expected to reach at least $15 million, said Ed Fox of the U.S. Agency for International Development. He called it an initial response until surveys are concluded and requests considered.
Also, Fox said, the United States was drawing on shelter, food, water cans and other supplies that were kept in reserve in the Philippines and in Dubai.
Powell cautioned that was a ''quick infusion'' and that the administration was prepared to help with long-term rebuilding.
He also said while several hundred Americans were unaccounted for it does not imply they were casualties. ''It just means we haven't been able to reach out and get contact with them,'' he told reporters at the State Department.
Assessment groups were sent to Thailand and Indonesia, and 21 specialists will fan out through the region to help with sanitation, health and relief supplies, Fox said. Most of the specialists are based in Thailand.
The U.S. Navy said it sent three P-3 surveillance aircraft from Kadena air base on the Japanese island of Okinawa to Utaphao, Thailand, to conduct survey operations, including a possible role in search-and-rescue efforts.
The Navy said it had no reports of damage to any of its ships or bases in the region.
President Bush expressed his condolences over the ''terrible loss of life and suffering,'' the White House said. Bush is beginning a post-Christmas vacation at his Crawford, Texas ranch.
Powell said Bush had written letters to the heads of state in the countries damaged by the disaster.

CUDDALORE, India - The buzz of grim conversation in the darkened morgue was broken by a man’s shriek as the small body was lowered on a bed. “My son, my king!” wailed Venkatesh, hugging the limp shrouded bundle
Thousands of miles away in Indonesia, farmer Yusya Yusman aimlessly searched the beaches for his two children lost in Sunday’s tsunami. “My life is over,” he said emotionlessly.
On the day disaster struck, Malaysian Rosita Wan recalled watching in horror as her 5-year-old son was gulped by the sea while he swam near the shore at Penang.
“I could only watch helplessly while I heard my son screaming for help. Then he was underwater and I never saw him again,” said a sobbing Rosita, 30.

99% of those that died wouldn't have a clue what a tsunami is, nor what to do, and are likely not to believe it. Some of the footage showed a pile of people down at a beach to take photos after the first wave, only to get wasted by a second surge.

From an ethics class discussion... there is a faction who holds the logic of feeding/aiding a people that can't support themselves makes the problem worse. If you feed the starving kids, they grow up and have more kids, which multiplies the problem. Better to let them starve off so the ecology balances itself out.
Not saying this is my standpoint, but I did think it made for an interesting point of view.

A tremendous amount of grief and suffering over there. Its horrible.
I read about some scuba divers at 50 foot depth off Shri Lanka that were picked up by the tsunami and deposited inland, on the side of a hill!
It seems the receeding tsunami is far more devastating than when it is incoming, due to it pulling people out to sea ...

Just saw the same number reported
Then it went into a particularly absurd report on if it could happen on the east coast of the USA and how we arent doing much about it.
the Expert they had on kept saying it was FAR more likely to happen on the west coast. But the reporter kept harping on the east coast (trying to create news I assume).
In any event the reporter was talking about a system that would give people a 15 minute warning.
Now I saw another report that said this thing was moving at around 500 miles per hour.
Stuck me as odd the thought that 15 minutes was all the warning that would be needed.
To do what? Make out your last will?
Call your relatives and say goodbye?
Exactly what are you gonna be able to do in 15 min to escape something that big bearing down on you at 500 MPH?
I am convinced most reporters take idiot pills first thing when they get up in the morning.
In any event. Terrible thing that happened over there.
But I seriously and sadly doubt any warning less then a day in advance would have had much effect on the death toll.
All we can do now is help the living and pray for the dead.
Very sad
-
But I seriously and sadly doubt any warning less then a day in advance would have had much effect on the death toll.
Actually, if you are on the beach and get a 15 min warning ahead of the tsunami, you could easily run a quarter mile inland and be completely safe. I think if a warning system were in place many of the people who died could have survived because instruments picked up the earthquake a full hour ahead of the tsunami's arrival...

Dunno. Judging from the film I am seeing It doesnt look like 1/4 mile was going to make that much of a difference.
Either way here in NJ if your at one of the popular shore areas such as Seaside park forget about 1/4 mile its going to take you 15 min to go a block and much of that area is barrier islands and only barely above sea level as it is.
-
I read that many of the victims were children because the tsunami was preceeded by what seemed like unusually high tide and waves that deposited all kinds of fish, leaving them flopping on the beach.
Word spread ,and a lot of kids went to down to the beaches to see this phenomenon - just in time for the tsunami.
-
Drediock - my impression is that you can definately save your life by getting away from the beach as far as you can in 15 mins. But not just linear distance - for instance, in NJ getting to the top floor of a sky scraper will save ya too. As you point out, living on a low laying island is going to leave you pretty vulnerable - although I think you are still better off running towards the lee side.

Even if most people have have heard the word tsunami and know what it is, most of them probably don't associate the sudden lowering of the sea level to it. Until now...

99% sounds _very high_ Vulcan. Alot of the dead are children and they may not know, but these people are not dumb so even if they may not know the word tsunami they most likely know about giant waves.

Break out the check books folks, the world needs us now.

Lets just say I know a lot of SE Asian's (Cambodians, Thai, Indonesians, Vietnamese), and the level of education in areas like those hit. "Dumb" has no bearing on education. And for most people in these areas education is minimal. Even for those well off their educations never really touch on the stuff most of "us" know about. Its just not that important to them yet, nor do they have the time for it.

"The flooding uprooted land mines in Sri Lanka — torn for years by a civil war — threatening to kill or maim aid workers and survivors attempting to return to what's left of their homes."
This is insane.

Up to 80,000 dead. :(

Has anyone found video of the actual wave? Someone had to get some video of it.. Somewhere..

15 minutes wouldn't have done squat, unless you were right next to a mountain or a skyscraper.
This wave was probably hundreds of miles long and carried enough energy to force itself several miles inland in Thailand. Many island communities simply no longer exist, and most of the western Malaysian islands were first levelled by the earthquake ... completely leveled ... then the tidalwave washed everything out to sea. - GScholz
I'm totally ignorant about tsunamis, but I'm trying to understand the dynamics at work. I don't think that we have yet seen that one film clip that will be the quintessential representation of a tsunami hitting the shore. However, if you study the video clips available so far, (see Mora's link) you will see that a 15 minute
warning would definately be helpful to an individual on the beach - especially if that individual happens to be YOU.

I know that, but things like earthquakes, giant waves and forest fires are usually legends and things you learn about in the vilages by old folks and stuff. Alot of people without any formal education at all knows about practical things in life.

You also have to be able to deliver the warning to the public. I'm not sure if these countries have a public warning system, and even if they do, would the people have done anything if they hear a siren go off?. Radio and TV broadcastings are too slow and don't reach enough people in cases like this.

well, in Florida at least, when a shark is spotted the sheriff sends a helicopter over the beach to warn people over the loudspeaker.
But I have no idea how many helicopters it would take to warn people over thousands of miles of beaches.
In any case, they'd have to be based really close to the water to make a diference.

Those killed so far according to Thai authorities:
Sweden: 54
Germany: 49
UK: 43
S-Korea: 36
USA: 20
Norway: 18
Finland: 14
Canada: 13
Austria: 13
France: 12
I feel very bad for the Swedes, this might be even worse for them than the Estonia ferry disaster.
These numbers may grow 10 times. From a single Finnish 17 person family 14 is unofficially reported dead.:(
