Title: Fair weather warriors....
Post by: humble on December 26, 2004, 01:08:19 PM
Sigh,

Upped for a hop or two....noticed 114 was going under....got vulched in an FM-2 so launched F6F from CV on other side of island and headed back. Meanwhile a bunch of "fellow" niggits were attacking 100....someone commented 10+ knights over 100 10+ rooks over 114. Anyway called out CAP alt on my way into 114 and got back some noobish response from guys at 100. Instead of just letting it go made a comment back....got told to keep my mouth shut till I got my score up:rolleyes: ....

Of course 114 fell shortly afterward....as for the "hotshots" at 100....well the moment the rooks who took 114 started upping at 100 they dissappeared back under the rock they crawled out from under....

No wonder 3/4 of my squads playing world of warcraft now...least they can turn dip*****s like my "fellow" knights into frogs or something:)

Eh....  typical for the knit's.  Don't let it get ya' down.  SOMETIMES they pull together, and when they do it's great.

it's the Lil' Generals that spend 24/7 on here trying their heart out trying to maintain a score below 200 or 100 in the rank,  just rag em out, kidding :-)

ignore them, if it wasn't for their thought of them being a great Aces High commanding authority in the arena and ability to yank a cv from you and proceed to get it sunk or destroyed etc.....they would have nothing else great in their life to look forward to......

have fun flying your own way and if you feel like helping another out do it, if not don't sweat it............Humble, you will just will have to ignore the "You Didn't check my 6, when I was shooting that wingless plane you wounded down",  "kill the FH's not the VH you idiot", "I am vulching, don't tell me what to do, if you want ack dead you kill it" comments because they are the authoritive figures that know what is best :D

Turning into a frog can be a great thing humble.

I'd say, just keep doing what you are doing Humble, cooperation takes a lot of work, and when you do get something going as a team effort, be very thankful, and  don't worry if the outcome of the team effort doesn't go well, at least you managed to get a group of people who really don't know each other to work together.

Happy HOlidays.

This is an absolute GREAT way to figure out a lot of different things...  I fly different countries when the #s get low and um...  Well, some of the Knights low score boys leave something to be desired in "range of tactics"...  That's the same across the board though.

But yeah, Humble, those are your choices in the MA.  Either be part of the horde, or be overwhelmed by an enemy one 25 miles away.

Just saddened that with some very notable exceptions like yourself TC, Shane, Drex, Greebo etc...I wouldnt even want to have a beer with 80% of the folks who play this game anymore....bunch of sheep in chickens clothing:)....

I saw the same thing... 10+ guys attacking an undefended base and 10+ guys on the other team doing the same just one sector away.

Not sure if it is the map, the kids on vacation, or the gameplay itself slowing down into a game of checkers.

hmmm.... yesterday i upped at an undeffended, capped field, shot a mossie down while taking off, wheels down, shot two 110s and a goon, saw greebo get a 110, then chased another 110 away with greebo.

after that they didnt bother coming back.

i mean, did they want to fight for the base, or just capture one for the eventual goal of 20 free perks on reset?

kinda lost to me.

shamefull thing was they were knights, i had switched to bish for the day.

ah well, helps me look better in fighter kills tho... :P

Just to keep the record straight, those weren't rooks at 100/114 etc., those were  Bishops.

Humble, I know right where your coming from. Yesterday, We worked hard to capture a base from the cv. Once we captured it I along with 3 others proceeded to go onto the next base. After 5 minutes I look at the map and see 6 bish porking the strat close by and 10 others flying just off the cv waiting on low buffs.  So, having my fill of the non teamwork going on. I got on country channel and told bish to pull their heads out and quit being stupid. Naturally I was met with all kinds of sarcasism telling me how I was "king Bish" and " almighty and knowing". Like what was mentioned earlier I dunno if its because schools out or what, but maybe an arena should be set up for those who dont want to participate in team/country cohesion. Tactical play as some may put it. I know the same problems are on all sides and there is absolutely nothing that can be done.

humble ... thats too funny. I was the first to up 114 to defend it. I announced on country channel at least 3 times that it was under CV attack. I tried to hold them off for at least 10 minutes by myself, but the more I killed them, the more they launched so I finally just gave up.

I then looked at the map and there were a chitload of Knights not even a sector away attacking 100. Well they continued to attack 100 for what seemed hours, with no capture, and in the mean time, at least four more surrounding bases fell. Myself and a few others tried to stem the tide at these other bases, but again, to no avail as we were overcome by shear numbers.

It's funny to see how myopic some can get. Tons of resources on 100 trying to capture one base while all the other bases fall around it ... sometimes ya just got to cut your losses and re-focus.

Ya gotta love when someone pulls the "rank" thing ... truly shows who hasn't a clue.

ok... I was at 100.  I was outnumbered by bish but it was a good fite.

A good fite, get it?    I don't care about capturing anything... I care about a good fite.

You guys ***** and moan but it is you who are causing all this horde mentality... this capture at all costs.   capture at the cost of having good fites.

I don't hear anyone complaining when they are hording a base to capture it.   all these guys slapping each other on the back when one guy drops a bomb on a flak so that the other 10 can "cap" an undefended base.

bout the only good fites that develop are around the light bulb fragile CV's and they last about as long as some mouse weilder in a 3 pack of gunships can get up and drop bombs on em.

so long as the only way to capture a base is with 5 times the numbers then there will be the hordes and the horde mentality.   When 20 guys come in at 8-15k... are you gonna up to defend?  no... so what is left?   join a group of 20 guys that is hording an enemy base?   that is what you see... big bars of red or big bars of green... no fun to attack and no fun to defend.

So what are you left with?   well... if your side has the most numbers.... you get to "win" the war and the hawaiian vacation that HT gives for the effort.    You get5 to put off buying a decent computer and trading in your mouse for a joystick a little longer.   you get to kill a few toolsheds and circle around a lot.

ok... I was at 100. I was outnumbered by bish but it was a good fite.

Had you been on a hour earlier, you wouldn't have been able to see the base icon on the map due to it being completely covered in green. They did finally give up on it and that was probably just before you logged on.

Post by: lazs2 on December 27, 2004, 10:35:32 AM
ok slap but that is just my point... you can go where the bar is completely green or completely red but base capture is the thing not the fite.   it is the horde.. you can be part of the horde or fight it but either way... it is pure luck if you find a fite that lasts very long before the mouse weilders show up.

If you fly the sector and a half to something that looks like it might be a good fite..... it is a bust by the time you get there... either your "teammates" take out the fighter hangers (and leave the VH for some reason)  or...  you are met by 20 la7's

You know, for some one with a score like yours, you seem to have a lot of opinions.  Why don;t you spent a little more time improving your score (lets say below 50)?  Then you can talk to us about how to play the game.

Yup ... I agree. That is why, for the most part, I play the "defend" role. I scan the map looking for the intial wave of an attack (looking for blinking airbases with no dar dots) and seek out my fights there. I especially look at bases that are more vunerable to CV attack as they usually provide the better fights with Seafires, A6Ms, and F6Fs caused they are forced to fight when encountered ... F4Us just blow by and do the pork/auger thing.

Airbases that are more likely to see an attack from another land airbase usually lend themselves to bringing the run90s, run09s, runstangs, LaLa, and N1Ks. For the most part, there aren't any fights in this scenario but sometimes ya get lucky.

There's nothing wrong with the strategic bombing of toolsheds.. er.. factories. In all seriousness, it *does* help the team effort if it's capitalized on. 1 quick flattening every 2 hours extends the downtime of flattened/porked bases. If one side's factories are at 100%, and the other is at 0%, then you have a decided advantage when the horde is rolling forward.

Yes, bombing toolsheds is boring, but if you ignore the score-whoring portion of it, it does help out your side in that zone. If it weren't worth points/perks, it'd be a thankless job nobody would want to do :)

TC I hear ya!

I cant imagine being a new guy to online gaming and having someone in here talk to me like some have. Some are downright mean. "Kill the FHS...we are trying to get a goon in!"..."No dont kille the FHs, we want to vulch a while!.....great..(name) you idiot why the *(&)( did you kill the FH?

There are atleast 4 camps in here...probably more.
1. Land grabbers..I call Realtors. They go in low and try to kill the base and town and try to capture.

2. The Purists...they fly seriously, try to survive, wont commit to a land grab if it endangers them. More concerned with the realistic aspects of the game, rather than the map.

3. The Score-potatos...prefer vulching over anything else, dont cooperate with Realtors at all, mouthy to anyone who defies their opportunity to vulch, and seem to rtb just as the goon appears at the base.

4. The Fuggits...usually armed with a mixed drink or a cold beer, in between smoke breaks...come in, fly die, have fun their own way, usually a mix of those stated above.

Its hard to get all camps organized in one direction. The main thing is to have as much fun in the game as you can, and to use a little self discipline in watching what you say to fellow players. What we do here in the game impresses nobody in the real world. We dont go sit around bars in town picking up the ladies on our AH prowess.

Alot of folks who play here and in other games are lonely, socially "retarded" individuals, who never learned to play nice with other kids. Thats life...when they surface, its best to ignore them and squelch them. To try to defend your online honor is as pointless as his arguement. Just laugh to yourself, and pity the poor soul. This game may be the only thing that person has going for him.

I think you're right to a point Filth, but I don't think it's quite so definative. I can hold my squad up as an example... During the week, and most of the days, we furball or GV it. If a vulch is on, I'm not ashamed to take part in it. In a sick part of my mind, I like the race for kills. I like a good GV spawn camp too. We encourage everybody to do 1 milkrun + 1 GV run a day for scorepotato purposes. If E starts to equalize and there's alot of bad guys, I'm taking my toys & going home. We'll up GV's & fighters in defense until a vulch gets on (or I get tired of trying to HO people in a Yak-9T... takes 2 to go nose to nose!) Beers, mixed drinks, & smoke breaks aren't uncommon. Then it's squad night. We hang an open for business sign on the door, and grab up land as fast as we can.

Being in 1 camp is one thing, but imho, it's much better to get a taste of everybody's world :)

If we did it on a fuzzy-logic scale, I'd say I'm 0.2 land grabber, 0.2 purist, 0.2 score potato, 0.4 fuggit

Points & perks. You don't get them when you land sorties?

edit: I'll be more specific on that. I personally like flying Arados. If I have to bomb toolsheds into submission to get perks fast for one, then so be it.

I deleted my account for awhile & restarted a week into December. Had some perks briefly, then I ripped the wing off a 262. I think I have maybe 150 total perks at the moment. Sorry lazs, not everybody has enough time invested to up an endless amount of perk rides... even those of us that love a good fight.

Points are good for absolutely nothing, except, I like being able to look at a scoreboard & go, "Cool, my squad is #6". I like looking at my score & going "Okay, gotta pickup the pace on fighters, bomber score is on track, doing fine on jabo, but need more GV time". It gives me a direction to go other than "up-fight-land/die-repeat". That gets way too repetative for me. If there's a scoreboard that will give me at least some sort of measurement for progress, I'm not ashamed to use it, even if people think it's a joke. At least I'm practicing all facets of the game and trying to get better.

I'm thinking maybe y'all hate vulchers & 2 pc, self-killing dweebs so much that y'all are blinded to any kind of benefits in the system.

We encourage everybody to do 1 milkrun + 1 GV run a day for scorepotato purposes

If you are "scorewhoring" then how can you credibily claim ...

"Cool, my squad is #6"

See the irony in that ?

I must commend you for your vigor and enthusiasm and if that gives you joy and fun ... more power to ya ... just don't expect others to gasp for breath when we see your squad ranked so low.

Personally I think its the map.

This map is just "wiered". I seem to have a hard time finding good battles. There are so damn many bases but so few fights.

There are basicly no smaller engagements at this map at all. Its a few hoards, 1 or 2 per country.

During the last 2 maps there has been alot of great lower numbers fighting and evenly matched hoards clashing.

Its easy to blame the people and "the game play" but I really dont think its either of em. Its the map.

Why does everyone around here care about rank?  Rank is nothing except it gives you the opportunity to control a cv.  As long as your having fun, who cares if your rank is really bad or if you are a bad pilot.  If your having fun, its all good. :aok

I know exactly what you're saying SlapShot, I just disagree... I see it from a different POV.. however you want to put it.

If porking a factory did not affect rebuild times, then a milkrun wouldn't accomplish anything at all. Now, I could be wrong, but from everything I've read, flattening factories increases the downtime of the hangar/bunker/barracks/whatever at each base in the zone. That's pretty helpful for your side imho.

Now, if I'm wrong, then I'm a moron & have been wasting my time. Otherwise, every little bit helps. A score improvement & some perks for taking your time to do it seems like a fair reward, not one to be sneered at.

Now if you're looking at scores as an indicator of personal skill, yeah, I can see, and agree with all the arguements against it. However, I think it serves as a good measurement of how you & your squad is helping out your side.

get your squad to fight the TAS or some other furball orientated squad in the DA for 30 mins. even if you have twice thier numbers they will school you, most likely with no deaths.

this is because they fight to learn how to fight better.

milk running and vulching does not help you learn anything.

this is top secret stuff, here is the knight base taking strategery:

1. Assemble mission
2. Launch from hangar into field gun position
3. Reassemble mission
4. fly to nme base
5. 1/2 way to base, 1/2 of mission turns to chase down lone spit.
6. Arrive at nme field, de-ack
7. reassemble mission
8. return to nme field, take down a fiter hangar
9. After a reasonable amount of time, take down vh, make sure no less than a dozen flaks are on field.
10. after 1st fighter hangar comes back up, take down next fighter hangar.
11. auger, killshoot, pancake, rtb fuel, -a good Knight keeps his options open-
12. Repeat steps 8 - 11 (also known as "Conga") for as long as possible, keep things interesting by getting an undefended goon close by the half up town from time to time.

*Important* -----> It's necessary for at least one person to fall victim to goonlemming syndrome during this part of the operation.

13. After a consensus is reached that step 12 has been completed, get vh, fh, town all down.
14. Start new mission to capture next field, return to step 1.

I've got no problem if someone is into "rank"....you payed your $14.95 just like I did and you get to bomb all the tool sheds you want to....

BUT....

The real test of how good you or your squad is happens when you and the other toolshed warriors squabble over the same turf. Now the bisquits (thanks for correction zanth) were after 114 and the "good guys" were after 100. Now, obviously the barbarian horde was able to overcome the defense (spirited I'm sure) presented by slap and others {in truth we always lose to the horde eventually} since our toolshed warriors were otherwise occupied. Now, once 114 was taken the defense #'s went up significantly at 100....and our brave toolshed warriors immediately redeployed to less contested digital dirt....forevering answering the age old question...."whats in your wallet (er sack)"?....answer.....not a stinkin thing:rolleyes:

Now, obviously the barbarian horde was able to overcome the defense (spirited I'm sure) presented by slap and others {in truth we always lose to the horde eventually} since our toolshed warriors were otherwise occupied. Now, once 114 was taken the defense #'s went up significantly at 100....and our brave toolshed warriors immediately redeployed to less contested digital dirt....forevering answering the age old question...."whats in your wallet (er sack)"?....answer.....not a stinkin thing:rolleyes:

Regardless of what some folks say, I think it's way too easy to get caught up in the 'reward' system of the game, whether it be 'winning the war" or collecting perk points and showing up on the score board.

So and so lands 57 kills in his LA7.  WTG's all round.  Folks like to hear it.

If it didn't matter, there wouldn't be score potatos.    It's always easier to follow the horde and dive in with all the advantages.

Even the folks who up to defend, and I include myself in this bunch, get worn down after a bit from always getting mugged by the mob.  I gave up worrying about points after my second tour in Airwarrior, so that doesn't matter, but I'd be lying if I didn't mind landing once in a while.  Being a Nomad that's a challenge as it is, but we've proven we can do it once in a while.

The dream fights are the ones where the numbers are even and it's a roll of the dice and maybe a bit of skill if you survive it.

Sadly they probably happen once every couple of days if you are lucky.  Otherwise it's the horde mentality hard at work.

Well .. unless you pork ALL the factories (like AAA factories) then very little is impacted ... and ... unless you level the cities (the ones with the C in the circle) along with the strat factories ... again ... very little impact. Level the City and all the AAA factories and now your talking impact, but very few have the patience to do all that ... they just pork the factories to boost their "bomber" rank so that they can be l33t and have a low rank .... so they can ...

Control a CV and tell others like humble that they are full of crap cause they have a lower score and are somehow more intune than humble.

Here is a tip for you and your squaddies if ya really want to scorepotato ...

Take 1 Stuka with 1 1800 Kg bomb and drop it on a new strat. Destroy messages will fill the screen. Land the Stuka and park it. Your bomber score will be higher on that one run than a dozen or so runs in your Ar 234. I am telling you this so you can then spend more time in a fighter and learn the finer aspects of A to A Combat and hopefully you won't go home with all your toys ... u must learn to share ya know.

Better put up the whole quote so I'm not credited with that statement.

Just because we look at scores doesn't mean we suck. We've got a bunch of first rate furballers. I can hold my own, but most of them put me to shame.

I've been told to do it in Ju87s, but there's 2 reasons I don't. 1) B-24s/26s/Lancs get better coverage and kill a higher % of the factory (I'll sacrifice a few perks for a bigger flattened %)... multi-engine bombers shake my room when I turn up the 5.1 (neat)... and I like to roll back on the throttle so fighters can catch up, so I can put all those MG's on them. I don't trust my skills trying to fight it out in a Ju87. Tried it before. Kinda sucked.

Who are the 69th hangar bangars anyway, never heard of them, new squad?

Used to be the Shiznotz. Dragoon left the game & we reformed with TalonX as the CO. I quit for a few weeks while this was going on, lost my previous callsign Indy007 cuz of it, and now I fly as IndyHB. Been a decent month, killed more than I've died, haven't had more than 10 vulch kills in 3 weeks, shot down Shane's F4U (got an assist, blah, then was shot down by him 5 minutes later), and figured out how to kill Tiger's fast.

Now to clear something up, because I let it go & felt like debating the usefulness of porking strats. Not once since I started playing again have I been told to make sure I did my daily milk/gv run. Alot of my squad has bomber ranks > 1000. The daily milk/gv run was part of Dragoon's guide to scorewhoring (I'm not joking, I wonder if a link is still up...). However I still don't think it's a bad idea to have a decent rank. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. With high rank, you just take the CV back :)

The "score" thing never bothers me....truthfully it's not tough to get a decent score. Mine was 581 last tour....meanwhile the noob in question was 1031. Tour 57 he was 935 and I was 673. Now the few times I've thought about score I'm in the ~200's....but after a week or so its so boring I stray back to the old habits.

If we use tour 58 my primary ride was the Ki-61, 2nd was P-38 (keep beating my head against that brick wall) and third was the F6F (jabo ride)

Noob's top rides are Nikki, spitIX and PXIV....in 57 he's spitIX,hurricane,nikki. In Tour 57 I'm 142/58 in Ki-61.....he's 84/74 overall:) ......

Now I'm sure he's actually a nice guy...and for all I know he may be halfway good....but geez...if these are your #'s vs digital dirt you got aways to go....

Now obviously there are tons of guys here that are way over my head....at least I've got the common sense (most of the time) to think before I go off at the mouth:)....

When i was new to AH i thought score is important. I also liked the land grab and teamwork part. I still do it sometimes, i'm usually playing along if the team i'm on shows cohesion. It's simply cool when guys work together.
That said, the score and land grab part put blinders on me for quite a while. In reality, in my best scoring days, my flying skills were abysmal .. even with a rank <100.
It's a whole new game when you finally realise "score means NOTHING". I still suck as a pilot but after noticing that ACM doesnt equal
"IF your_E > opponent_E THEN engage() ELSE run()"
Aces High has become a whole different game for me, lot of stuff to discover and most importantly a boatload of fun.
My hope is i'm not the last one who discovers this..

Well, I have to say I have a lot of hobbies, and if I really wanted to seriously learn something it wouldn't be immersing myself in ACM.  I think this game is fun, and the fights where you tangle with guys is great.  But if I want to spend time learning something there are other things I could pick that would actually make me money rather than making me spend more of it.  I've been taking f4fs into fights just to make it more fun.  Heck I fly almost every plane in the game just cus I enjoy it.  But, there is also something else I get out of the game...  release of work related stress.  As far as that is concerned this is my graceland.  When I hook up with 15 guys and we go hit a base, if we have cap and guys start upping, I won't lie to you guys.. I vulch um, and I probably smile when I do it cus like I said, this is a stress reliever.  Taking B24s and leveling a city... oh yeah, set it ablaze!  Roast the infadels!!!!  Good times.

Until Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas becomes available on Xbox and I can get points for lighting up as many gang members as I can with a flamethrower in a minute, I will take pleasure in the little things like mentioned above and if that means I'm not working my way to the best fighter pilot, then so be it, cus I be happy  :aok

indy... you missed my point about the friggin perks... I have no use for em..  the reason I have so many is because I fly the "less capable" planes.   I have no interest in flying a 262   I rarely (maybe half a dozen times) fly a perk ride..  I flew the tempest but you can't get killed in it if you pay attention so why bother.

I got told this not long ago as well. SOOOO...I promptly flew above the said General and watched him die a glorious death at the hands of 6 Flaks. Strange when there was like 10-12 at the start and all I said was you should prolly kill the VH first.

Thats of course when I got told to shut up "Newb". Your score suks and so do you he said.

The General lost all his buds and died as I rtb'ed with my 3 lil kills.

Ahh its good to be a newb.

I've found two great ways to die in a Tempest while paying attention...

1) Attack a buff group too casually and happen upon a good gunner.
2) Subject yourself to ground fire, be it puffy ack, field AA, or AA GV's.

havent I heard all this before??

I guess things havent changed much in AH. Of course I wouldn't know because I got sick of the lame gameplay long ago...... to bad all these reports suggest it's still the same...... LAME.

And I was once in a squad where we (bout 6-7 of us online at the time) all decided to take tempests up in a big group, 1 out of the group landed, another was shot down, ALL the rest got booted and lost said perk points. " c o n.....spiracy"

I had many perk planes brake for lame reasons. Once barely overshot runway in a 262, figured "no problem ill just turn around on the grass here and roll back onto the runway". it was as if there was a 2foot curb on the edge of the runway, 262 just blew up! Yet another great AH experience!

But I did enjoy my first few years, seems so long ago now....

Sorry but who cares....over the last 4 times I quit I left 10,000 perkies at least...who cares what happens to any one plane...

Whats funny is I dont really have an issue with "score" guys...or shawk keasawwa(sp) and the other "advantage" flyers or bomber guys etc (dont agree with em but so what)...what amazed me is that a guy would bother to look up my "score" and then decide how to treat me...that combined with how fast he and his rumpranger buddies boogied from a semi capped field the moment that the bisquits started to try and up...

A group of Knitwits a few days ago asked for my help in attacking a base, they needed someone to fly CAP to cover their bombers.  So I agreed to help them so when I get there, a couple of bogies up and are promptly killed.  So more bogies up and then all the Knitwits that were attacking the field left for greener pastures at an undefended base a couple of sectors away, leaving me to fend off a horde of rather upset bogies.  I made the comment about how funny it was seeing a group of guys run in panic at the first sign of opposition only to be told that I was a n00b and didn't know squat about tactics or strategy.

Now I use these guys primarily as bait.  And they never took the undefended field.  They spent too much time porking the base that the town would respawn before their goon got there.

You quit 4 times??? what was it that inspired you to comeback? I quit 1 time, and that was because I hated what the game had become. I still haven't heard of a single improvement to gameplay, which is the ONLY thing that could inspire me to come back.

As far as perk points, I guees my point was that they are a small step above useless, as the perk planes are(when I flew) ridiculously fragile. Which IMO, reduces gameplay as well.  But just a small drop in the bucket. I had thousands of perk points as well when I lost the desire to fly AH, I burned em up in a blaze of glory before I deleted my account.
