SB2U Vindicators in the foreground. One of those classic Hollywood Navy aviation films being made?
Wouldn't be "Dive Bomber" with Errol Flyin and company that has all that great color film of planes off the Enterprise would it?

Those Vidicators had their tails painted WHITE so they would have been off the USS SARATOGA CV-3.
ID CODE:
----------------------------------------------------------
Yellow - USS Lexington CV-2
White - USS Saratoga CV-3
Green - USS Ranger CV-4
Red - USS Yorktown CV-5
Blue - USS Enterprise CV-6
Black - USS Wasp CV-7

From what I've read, some of the aircraft were repainted in spurious markings for the movie.
A color photo I've seen also shows the same "High Hatter" markings worn by these Vindicators.
Made me think it was from the same film

Probabilly So.
The "TOPHATTERS" was actually VS-41 and was assigned to the USS RANGER CV-4 with 19 SB2U's in both 1939 & 1940. I don't have records for other years or the year the move was made.
VS-41 changed their designation during 1943 to VB-4 and kept it till after the war when it became it's current VF-14. The squadron is currently flying the F/A-18F SUPER HORNET.
As the plane in the pic - VB-3 was assigned to the SARATOGA. Most likely they just changed the squadron insignia (VB-3's was a diving Black Panther) as the "TopHatters" was a very well known squadron of the 30's.

SB2U, it is:)
..............
As noted this is a pick from the making of the film, the CV is either Saratoga or Enterpise.

Lol, this one wasn't too hard considering the designation is stencilled on the rudder! ;)

Well no it wasnt, but their not all suposed to be hard, it is a cool pick, but the Film part was somthing as well, and nobody named the other ship in the pick....
