Title: Looking for new video card
Post by: Nuke33 on December 27, 2004, 01:43:34 PM
I'm looking into getting a new video card and thought I'd come here for some suggestions.. Currently I have a GeForce4 MX 420 64mb card.. I'd like to stay with the NVIDIA chipset cause thats all ive had and never had much trouble.. I'm looking to spend about $150 for an APG 8x 128-256mb card.. I'm running a P4 2.4c with 512mb RAM.. What do you guys think? Thanks!

For that kind of money I'd go with an ATI 9700 pro. Much better performance than the Ge Force 4 series cards. You have to go to the 6800 to top it, now your at 400 bucks and above. The 9800 will set you back around 250. Also you might want to check and see what your motherboard will support before you get one.

Since the new ATi 700XT will replace the ATI9800 Pro
i recommend a ATi 9800 Pro with 128mb ram, superb price for this power.
I run a AMD 2.6Ghz with 512mb Ram and the ati card above,
this team is just "perfect"! ;)

I was thinking the same... 16 pixel pipelines baby! Thing is, they're not available yet... :(  So 700xt will have to do.

I will never buy an ATI card again, it doesn't work with all the games I play. I have never ever had a problem with NVIDIA, have a GF FX 5700 with 256 megs and all my games play perfect at 1600x1200 res with max graphics.

Disclaimer:
I realize people have different experiences with cards, I have been pissed off at ATI too many times to use their cards again.

Same here, except I'm running a cheapo FX5200. Runs everything just great. ATI is a box of overpriced headaches.

Platinum last I heard is 550.  But it runs as low as 399 for the Pro.

i dont run any 3D benchmark, but i can tell you with my above
hardware and this card my feelings are:

1. Doom 3 runs total smooth
2. HL2 runs total smooth
3. ww2ol runs total smooth
4. FS2004 runs total smooth

all this software with max settings, cept doom3
one level down with the texture quality, i think
if you get the 256mb version you can play with max texture too.

and yes all with Anti aliasing on.
no problmes at all, i mostly play at 1280x1024 32bit Res.

I had the Ati 8500 before that, and its like night & day lol

ps: im planing to upgrade again to the 700 XT ;p

Just got a 256 meg ATI Radeon card for Christmas
so far no complaints.
BUT the only game I have tried running so far is AH.
So my experiances with them is limited

Prior to that I've always owned Nvidea cards.
Never had a problem with one

Whichever you choose and for just about anything you buy.
Rather then go to CompUSA or Best buy
Check out one of the local little mom & pop computer stores.
(usually run by asians no disrespect intended)

But you can often get parts from them at close to the same low cost you can find them on the net.
Certainly significantly cheaper then BB or Compusa.
And they often discount for cash bringing the price down even farther.
Just usinig this as a quick example.
I recently picked up a copy of Windows XP Professional upgrade as the operating system for a machine I just built for my wife.

Best Buy and CompUSA's best price was $179 on sale normally retailing at $199

I picked it up at one of those little shops for $100

After my experiances with dealing with some of these little stores I'll be checking these forst before I go to one of the major outlets again
