Title: New Processor ?
Post by: BlueJ1 on December 27, 2004, 03:57:30 PM
Have a Pentium III 600 Mhz now.

I want to upgrade.

The PC is an IBM Personal Computer 300PL.
Video card is a geforce 4.
Have a believed total of about 12 GBs.
More info on request.
I need to know if its possible first. And if it is possible, what kind of upgrades are possible and for how much. If anyone responds your going to make it slow and easy. Im still pretty slow in the computer enviroment.

Thankyou Kindly,
BlueJ

depends what you want to spend but it wpould proberly be cheeper to get a whole new pc.
you can get a motherboard and procceresr for about $100 or so then you would need a new box. and power supply ,you can use some of the hardwear like disc drives and hard drives from your old one.
but if you can afford it a new one will be a better option.

Name brand name computers tend to be "proprietary" which means "not easily upgradable".

The four big components to a system all have to fit together nice. The motherboard, RAM, vid card and processor. Change one and you'll probably need to change the rest.

I'd also suggest a new machine. You can keep your peripherals (keyboard, mouse, monitor, printer, etc) as they should be universal and just get a new tower.

Since we are both in the same neighborhood I can say that I had a very good experience with TG Officetex 3748 Harlem Rd (take the Harlem exit north off Genesee Rt.33 and its up there on the left about two lights next to the Kwik Fill.

Couldn't hurt to give them a call and tell them what you got and where you want to go. They will be glad to help you out.

I might check them out myself, mine is 3+ years old and now doubles as mine AND sisters computer, NEVER a good thing.
Will say you recommended them, if it matters.

My guess would be you need a complete new system, and with the prices we have here in germany i would guess you have to go for something like 600 bucks min. to get something that runs decently....
Make sure you dont get the now so famous integrated graphics.... wont work with ah.
Graphics board probably a geforce 5700 or radeon 9600, x600pro.
Maybe you can get a gforce 5900xt used somewhere... or radeon 9800 used.
Lots of people upgrade to better stuff at the moment and might be happy to get rid of the old one.

Need 512 mb ram
Need 128mb graphics ram
Need 2500+ Mhz rated cpu
Need 300W rated PS min.
Big Tower is best.. Mid Tower works.. but nothing smaller.
With the budget i would try Athlon XP and socket A motherboard.

Maybe you can find a friend who wants a new one and can talk him into selling you his old comp... you will have to get creative when you want to stay below 400 bucks... and i dont mean the soundcard.
Check if your old pc has network card or soundcard you can use... maybe you can use the case and powersupply, sure you can use the drives (cd floppy hd).
If the hd is older than 6 years consider a new one.

Always try to think up yourself... stuff anyone writes on the internet can be dead wrong or just misleading.

hope this helps..

oh and i would not buy at ebay....when you take used stuff get it locally and have the guy selling it show you that it works, also make sure to not buy from an wholehearted overclocker. When you run a cpu overclocked a lot it will die much earlier... looking at 2 years or 3 lifespan instead of 6 to 12.

Wow sorry... only wanted to write a short note...

Two great places to check on the web for PC Components.

Tigerdirect.com

BzBoys.com

can purchase mobo cpu combos for as little as 130 dollars US

cooling fans usually come with the combo. Some even include

memory.  CHeck them out.
