Title: Level of Detail vs. what the player sees...?
Post by: Heater on December 28, 2004, 09:25:15 AM
Quick question for HTC, on the level of Detail,

Say I have my Detail maxed out (i.e. all the way to the left) I see a lot of trees and ground detail...I hide my tank in the trees,
Now what will a player see that has the Detail set to the minimum (i.e. all the way to the right)?

The reason why I am asking is, as I was sitting on the runway last night I was playing around with the detail setting, and I saw that the farther to the left the slider moved the denser the trees became etc... to the point that it actually hid a few players from view.

If this holds true for each player, then that would mean players using less detail have more of a chance of spotting GV's etc...
if I am in a GV and think I may be hiding in under the cover of trees, I may well be out in the open for some players... is this correct?

You can slide your ground detail to minimum while "jaboing" for gvs, you will see the gv if its outside of the detail range, but then as you approach the gv you will "draw" trees over the gv when it gets within your ground detail range.

In effect it makes it easier to see the gv from a distance, but even at minimum detail level, you will see the tree cover over the gv while jaboing.

Just my observations.

if everyone is allowed to set their level, then everyone is not playing at the same level

nice for the masses and the slower cpu's but gamey

Dont know if this helps you: I had to play with all sliders to max performance and a 800x600 res with 128 textures because my laptop cant stomach more.

As for more easy spotting of GVs... ive seen them at d600 if i was lucky.
Same with field gunners. I usually couldnt see them at all. Not before crashing into them that is.

Id say details include gvs. But not too sure about that. Ever since i play on almost full details, i have a lot easier times against GVs.

Might also have to do with ground vision range setting. Id say play on the sliders and try out what works best for you.

Roscoroo,

Yes and once you do that, jump in a GV and then Increase / Decrease the Detail level slider and what what happens on the screen
