Title: Brother missing in Thailand
Post by: Chairboy on December 28, 2004, 02:34:21 PM
Hi guys,

My step brother hasn't called anyone since the tsunami, and he was in one of the areas hit.  If anyone has any ideas or if there are any lists anyone knows about where people who can't reach a phone are checking in, please let me know.  His name is Luke Scully, US Citizen.

I've been looking for resources online, but I'm running into a brick wall.  There's just not a lot of info out there yet.

Regards,

Chairboy

Chair....

My prayers are with you.  My wife and I spent lots of time in Thailand (we were stationed in Okinawa and flew there regularly).

Did you try checking the US Embassy in Bangkok?

To reach Thailand, call their emergency hotline at +66 2643 5262 and 2643 5000

The State Department has set up a hotline phone number for information on Americans missing in the region: (888) 407-4747.

The U.S. State Department set up a toll-free number for relatives to call about American citizens in the affected area: 888-407-4747.

Edit, WMLute beat me to it.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the help!  I've checked the US embassy in thailand, they didn't have any lists there.   I've been checking various lists offered through http://www.mfa.go.th/tsunami/index_en.php

Thanks for the state department #, I just called them.  They didn't have him on a list, but they said they'll call me as soon as he shows up in their system.  According to the woman I spoke with, the US is evacuating US citizens from toejamet to Bangkok, and there's very little communication in the area so far.  She also said that there were currently only 4 US fatalities documented, so I've got my fingers crossed.

I just found out that he was in Phangna, staying at the Khoalak Orchid, so I'm going to try pursuing that route next.

Best regards,

Chairboy

It's getting worse, we just saw news about Khoalak park (where he was) and it's bad.  Something like 1000 bodies so far where he is.

Still no word.

More than likely all the phones are out.  If your brother knew how to swim, he had a better than average chance of surviving.

Yeah, I just heard a report from someone who was there in person who said that resort was hit really hard, few survivors.

Someone in my family found out that the hotel records have been wiped out, so we can't 100% confirm he was there.  We're really hoping he left early and was elsewhere.

From what I’ve heard, its utter chaos there.  Communications are down.  He may be so busy helping out however he can and hasn’t even had a chance to think about calling in.

My point is that even though 60K+ have died, the vast majority survived.  So don’t worry yourself sick and hope for the best.

I hope all turns out well for him.

Fair enough, we really hope that's the case.  One of my sisters is getting ready to fly out there to check the notebooks for photo identification of bodies.  If anyone finds out that the photos will become available online, please let me know.

That little boy looks like the one I saw in the newspaper about a 2 year old boy they found sitting in a street but his parents are missing.  According to the newspaper (San Diego Union Tribune) the boy is fine with some minor cuts and scapes but the fate of his parents aren't known nor did they know his nationality.

So I mentioned one of my sisters is getting ready to head over, so we're getting a satellite phone rental.  My family heard some sort of rumor about a possible Quarantine coming, but I can't imagine WHY since the health problems will be bacterial.  Anyone have any idea why there would be a quarantine?  Maybe my imagination just isn't strong enough, but I can't figure out any reason why.

Well it isn't necessarily limited to bacteria. Drinking water is contaminated with decaying bodies, of all types of creatures that could be carrying who knows what, and it's possible for virii to propogate in these circumstances. Remember that the black death plague could be spread by placing an infected rat in the drinking water.

I hope he's okay.

I've been faxing the following document to hospitals in Thailand today:

A friend of mine translated a letter I wrote into Thai, and I added a photo of my step brother.  In addition, a friend of his is heading to the area to look for him.  My sister put her trip on hold temporarilly until we hear from her friend.

No change so far, but it doesn't look good.

Title: Brother missing in Thailand
Post by: Chairboy on December 31, 2004, 02:55:13 PM
Hi guys.

We still haven't heard anything, we hate the silence too.

He was staying at the Khaolak Orchid, and we originally thought he was in one of the bungalows on the beach that got totally wiped out, but he was staying in a room in the hotel.  The rest of my family is still as optimistic as they can be, but it's awful hard considering the silence from over there.

Some of my family have started a fund to raise money for a PI to go looking, but I can't think of anything that a PI could really do that the 7 or 8 friends looking over there right now can't, especially considering the broken up infrastructure.  They're calling and visiting hospitals and looking over photos, but a lot of the bodies at Khaolak were never photographed because nobody got to them until days later when decomposition got bad.

Unless a miracle occurs and he calls in to check his mail from New York or something, it'll probably be a drawn out process at this point.  It's not that likely though, because the last credit card transactions they made were at the resort immediately before the disaster, and they weren't large enough to be checkout charges.

I don't know quite how to feel.  My family is keeping up hope, but I feel like at this point, it's probably too late.  I don't want to say this to anyone because they'll think I'm showing some form of disloyalty, but I don't know.  Am I giving up too soon?  Or am I pragmatic?  Only time will tell.

I still have my fingers crossed, and I really hope he's ok, but it's  getting hard.

Not to mention the untold amount that were washed out to sea, and will never be seen again.  For the sake of your family, I hope that the situation there is so chaotic that all phones, including cells, are down and communication is next to impossible.  It’s becoming harder to imagine a scenario where he has not been able to make contact.

Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.  Take care Chairboy.

I belive it was in Thailand that the goverment _promised_ that no foreigners would be burried. They would only burry the locals

I just don't think that's practical.  The health concerns demand that all bodies are buried.  Disease knows no nationality, and the public good requires good hygiene.

Thats what they had promised anyway. The bodies of tourists etc are put in chilled containers.
Title: Brother missing in Thailand
Post by: patrone on January 01, 2005, 12:46:51 PM
Most bodies will be stacked in coldcontainers, 130 in each. 30  containers already in place, 20 coming from Australia and about 30 is on route from Sweden by plane.

A cold cargoship is also been chartered from Singapore, but it can not find any deep enough harbour close by.

Anyway, it will take months to go through this amount of dead people.

So if hes still alive hes in one of the least reachable spots. Most of the people we're seeing from that area are women, with guys staying on to help.

Chairboy i hope he makes it but they are  bagging bodies on that beach by the hundred.

As for paying a PI to go find him, i think that would be money wasted. Nobody is going to work harder to find him than family and friends.
Besides in that chaos a PI would have no better chance than you or I.

Btw was nobody horrified to see some hotels at that sawadee link posted earlier basically saying the press have exaggerated it terribly and to still come on your holiday as the hotels are working near to normal ?

Do not yet give up hope.

If he is in a hospital or was hurt it could take weeks for someone to contact you.

Also if he was backpacking he might not have even been there. When I was 28 I went on a trip to South Africa and was travelling with a british girl I met. We bought a car and drove from Cape Town to Victoria Falls and back to Durban. When we got to Durban she called her parents and found out they were just about to call the embassy and file a missing persons report as she had not contacted them for over 3 weeks.

I know these are faint hope reasons but there is still hope.

My prayers are with your family.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- An Albuquerque man learned Tuesday that his sister made it through the South Asia tsunami alive.

Nicholas Campbell called Action 7 News to say that his sister, Nicole Furi, e-mailed him Tuesday to say she survived the killer waves.

The woman was staying in toejamet, Thailand, at the time the giant waves struck. She told him she was carried away by the water, but managed to swim to safety.

Campbell said his sister is now in Bangkok, Thailand

Well how about that?  There is always hope!

A quick update.  The PI reported one thing back of interest, he confirmed that they had checked into the Khaolak Orchid and were current guests, and that they were on the 3rd floor which was undamaged.  Of course, they were probably on the beach when it happened, so...  Their room was stripped, nothing in it, but he's guessing it was because of looting.  Nothing like a tragedy to bring out both the best and worst in people.

Our family is having a sort of get-together in Portland next Saturday, the day they were supposed to come back.  Some of us will probably be at the airport, 'just in case', but really..  at this point, they should have called.  Either way, there will be a sort of party thing to celebrate their lives or whatnot if they don't show, and a huge bash if somehow they did.  I don't know what to think, it seems really heartbreaking to see this thing getting set up and hopes made so high.  I think there are some in the family who might be crushed when they don't get off the plane.  Fingers are crossed, but...  geez, I don't know.

I'm torn up when I watch TV and see stories of survival and horror in Thailand and the other countries hit.  Whole families ripped apart, children dead, parents dead, having a family member involved really brought it all home.  In some ways, I feel guilty that ALL I lost was a single step brother when other people lost all their children.  It doesn't sound right when I say it or write it, but this thing is so bad for people over there, it's borderline incomprehensible, and I don't know which side of that border I'm on.  Every time I think I've figured it out, I see or read something that makes it five times worse.

Anyhow, that's the current status.

GALLE, Sri Lanka (CNN) -- After 13 days trapped under the rubble of a seaside shop, a man believed to be in his 60s Saturday was rushed to a hospital in the southern Sri Lankan city of Galle, able only to mumble his name.

Doctors at Karapitiya Hospital said he is suffering from pneumonia and severe hydration, but will certainly live.

"Miracles do happen," Dr. Chandra Pala Mudanngake said.

Chairboy,

not to sound condesending but you are going through textbook stages of greif.  You should really look it up to help you understand what you are going through.  This dawned on me because you are talking about guilt.   I know this doesnt help much but greif is really a process.  I still hold out for the best though.

Missing Kiwi found alive
08 January 2005
By COLIN PATTERSON

A Wairarapa man missing from toejamet since the Boxing Day tsunami struck has been found safe and well.

Shane Street, 23, left a message on his father's phone the day the killer waves hit, saying he was thinking of going inland.

The family in Carterton had heard nothing since and concerns about his safety began to mount.

Yesterday, his uncle, Terry Crook, said an e-mail had arrived from Shane, saying he was safe and well.

"He had gone hiking and camping and had just got out of the bush. He was aware that a tsunami had struck India but had no idea it had hit close to where he was. He got quite a shock when he got out."

Mr Street's father, Sid, said Shane planned to continue his OE with a trip to China.

Meanwhile, infection has slowed the recovery of Lower Hutt man Jeremiah Boyack. His leg was broken in three places and his foot badly smashed after the tsunami threw him against a concrete wall.

From hospital in Mumbai, India, Mr Boyack said he had already had six operations. But the infection meant skin grafts and further surgery had to be put on hold.

"I'm slowly getting better," Mr Boyack, 31, said.

"I just got on crutches for the first time the other day. But it's frustrating being in hospital. I'm used to being able to walk around and go where I want to go."

Don't give up Chairboy, but at this point in time I think it may be time to start preparing for the worst.

I don't wanna spoil your hope, but time has gone and _most_ of those in hospitals throughout Thailand have been identified so..

Well.. you know what I think, but there is still a tiny chanse.

I have for good and bad always been a realist, and one should perhaps start to deal with the possible loss by now. From personal experience its good to prepare for the worst cause if one delays things to much they are far worse to cope with.

Now... lets tune in to some more optimistic posters :)

It's been two weeks, it's time we get realistic.  He...  would have called by now.  Most of my family is coming to terms with this now, that he died in the tsunami.

His flight back was scheduled for next week, and some of the family are going to wait at the gate just in case, but....

Next saturday, the family is having a sort of party/get together in Portland at the Crystal Ball Room.  If, against all odds, they show up at the airport, it'll be a welcome home party.  If not, well...  it'll be about them.  I don't know how to read it, gonna go, but kinda strange feeling about it.

Sometimes things just don't work out as we'd like...  But I'm sure someday it'll all make sense...  And I'm sure that you WILL meet again...  When it's time.

Just remember that no one is EVER gone until they're forgotten...  And if worst comes to worst (and I hope it doesn't but if it does), at the very least perhaps the thought of your own death will be less frightful, as you will have a friend waiting to meet you.

I'm still rooting for him though!

Hi guys,

Just wanted to close out the thread with an update and some thoughts.

This weekend, there was a wake/memorial/party for my step brother and his girlfriend in Portland, OR.  The family rented out the Crystal Ballroom, and despite the severe icing (the sidewalks were almost unnavigable, not to mention the roads) between 200 and 300 people showed up.

There was a lot of music, and some montage videos of the two of them that were really excellently done.  There was an incredible amount of family there, including people who had crossed the country to be there.

Thankfully, there was also an open bar, and it came in handy.

It was really special, and it really helped a lot of us realize the importance of family and how much we mean to each other.

I gotta say...  if there's someone in your family who you haven't talked to in a long time, or anyone you've been feuding with, consider taking a moment to give them a call to catch up.  We're all gonna die, and life doesn't usually give us a date we can use to coordinate farewells.  It's easy to put off calling the people who matter to you, but it's awful hard to touch base with them after they've gone.

I've shared this thread with my family, and they send their regards and thanks for your kind wishes.  Hopefully, my future threads will be more of the 'learning to fly' and 'I built a flamethrower!' variety, and not this.

Best regards,

Chairboy

Well I hope at some point your family gets some closer.
What can I say really I was only 6 when I lost my brother so I barely remember him.

Good luck to ya and I hope you and your family find some peace in all of this.

Just a quick FYI for those interested, my brother's body was just recovered in Thailand, so it's official now.  Not looking for any condolences, just providing followup.

My thoughts and wishes go out to the hundreds of thousands who lost everything over there after the disaster.  Nature's indifference can, at times, be indistinguishable from cruelty.

again i am truly sorry again, but i will say it is good to know they found him, and i hope that is of some comfort to you and your family.

just out of curiousity, it wasn't this guy reported in the news today was it?

http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/03/07/tsunami.victim.ap/index.html

if not, i think it's kind of rude for them to report about 1 person and not another.

I know this sounds really messed up - or at least it does to me -  but my first thought was "That's good news, man."

I never thought through a situation where a loved one just vanishes without a trace, until this thread.

It's ugly all the way around... but I think this is a little better.

I saw your kin on the news... they seem like really good people. I hope y'all are making it through this ok.

my heart felt condolences CB, my own brother was in northern Australia at the time although he said the evidence of the disaster was hardly noticeable.

i felt gut-wrenched when i heard the news of your bro missing, although its very sad im glad you have found him and no longer have to 'keep thinking and hoping' for his return.

I hope your family can have a few months of quiet R&R now that this has been concluded.

Let us not forget that many others here in this very forum may also have lost loved ones, let alone the millions of families affected globaly. my love is being sent out to you all.

It wasn't that guy, but it's not a popularity contest.  All we know is that the state department called and said they identified him by fingerprints.  As far as we can figure out, his body must have been one of those recovered that was refrigerated while they worked through the backlog.  That alone gives some idea as to the scale of the operation.  Terrible, really.  There are people working hard over there even as we speak, going through the dead to identify them for their families.
