This incident has always made me a bit angry at Johnson.  He saw the fighters coming in, but he couldnt raise his flight leader on the radio.  So he just stayed in formation, and the Germans attacked without resistance.

Suntracker..according to his autobio...he had been b**ched out on previous mission for dumping formation and doing just that
