Title: WinXP Workgroup problem
Post by: Midnight on December 29, 2004, 04:07:47 PM
I've got a simple workgroup of computers setup at the office. There's 5 computers on the network and all connections are good, all computers can ping each other, etc. Four of the computers can see all five computers (including itself). These four are using WinXP Pro or Win98. One of the computers, a Compaq Presario 2100, running WinXP Home cannot access the network computers. When I try to "view workgroup computers" I get this error message.

"Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available"

The other computers can see the Presario, but when I try to access it I get a message that says "The computer or sharename could not be found. Make sure you typed it correctly, and then try again."

I have checked the network configuration, and everything seems to be ok (Basically a default setup using TCPIP with DHCP obtained from a linksys router on the network) Any ideas?

Hmm do you have file sharing enabled on the XPhome system?

If i remember correctly it wont even look for other computers if file and print sharring is not set.

You are not running in a domain are you?

What Trell said. Netbios may not be running on that PC but will be when you enable file and print sharing. Another thing to check, be sure they are all in the same workgroup.
