Title: called a cheater! i must be dong something right
Post by: wrongwayric on December 31, 2004, 02:59:29 AM
Last weekend i was finally called a cheater! wow i must be learning! i fly under the name sleepy and was on a 5" gun on a cv. Got 37 kills and to many assists to count. One of my opponents at the time came on after the battle and said i must be cheating as i was killing him at 6k or more! Now i can honestly say that i donn't know how to cheat in this game (as my score can attest) but i am curious as to the range of the 5" guns!? I was constantly adjusting my aim to put my bursts out in front of the attackers and let them fly into my rounds. I took no offense to the individual who said i was cheatin, and even talked to him and told him so. But am still curious as to the range of the 5"s? any help? P.S. whoever was drivin that cv rocked! we lost our cv same time as and enemy cv, but took 2 bases first!:aok

I dont know the range of the 5in also. but i do believe it is possible to get a kill out about 10k out. ive heard stories from people .. even within my squad of kills that far out with 5in on cv.

Maximum ship-Land range for the 5" guns is 17k

take away the atlitude and speed of your target and work out the effective AA range yourself each sortie.

And yet people still feel it's necessary to take the CV group to within 1k of the base...

well hmm ,
what batfink (mechanic) said.

another thing ya have to look at is alt. 6000 ft is 2000 yds.

they might think they are out of range at 10-12k alt right over cv, but they are not.

I get plenty of kills in cv 5" when my FE says range is 5k from target and they right over cv diving in. that said, my 5000 yds is 15000 ft.

so generally if you are under 15000 ft alt. say ummm 8.5k away from cv, you are in range of CV 5".

just to give a general idea of how 5" kills at what seems to be impossible ranges.

I have couple films(can't find those particular ones, have too many) that says I got a kill, and whoever it was I killed wasn't even on the range, speed list,in the viewer. have no Idea, where they were, what they were in. < just pointing out CV 5" range is farther out than you can possibly range, to intentionally shoot someone.

hope this clears up the issue a little better than the short explanation Batfink gave. ;)   (for Batfink, :p  )

You assume way to much.  Alot don't even know about  the Auto ranger which will kick in from 33.5

I've gotten several kills from out of icon range in the 5" guns.  Seems to be the only thing I can ever get kills in. :)

If you go into a 5" gun, look at the top left of the screen.  It has a green (used to be green) icon display that shows range and direction.  If you play with the gun, you can get it to a range where if you go any lower the range will go down, and if you go any higher the range will go down.  Check that distance and that is the range of the guns.  I seem to recall that its somewhere around 12.7, but dont quote me on that.

I too have splashed many planes that were way outa icon range while manning a 5" gun.  It's not  easy to do for sure, but hey! its a knack and  some of us got it, but most dont!  haha!  lmao!  Hail the 5"!!!!!

Here is some details on the USN 5-38 (12.7) MK 12 Naval gun that was perhaps the best ever fielded.

Projectile

AAVT MK 39 and 49  54.61 lbs
bursting charge  7.9 lbs
Propellant charge  Flashless 15.5 lbs  Non-Flashless 15.4 lbs
Empty cartridge 13.25 lbs

MV New Gun 2600 fps
      Avg. Gun 2500 fps
Working pressure 18.0 Tons/in2 (square)
Barrel life 4600 rds

Range at Elevation with AAVT/AAC MK 49

10 deg  9506 yards
15 deg  11,633
20 deg  13,395
25 deg  14,804
30 deg  15,919
35 deg  16,739
40 deg  17,240
45 deg  17,392

AA Ceiling  37,200 feet

New Gun Maximum Range at 2600 fps 18,200 yards

Time of flight for MK 49 round

5000 yards 8.0 sec
10000 yards 22.0 sec
15000 yards 43.0 sec
17,270 yards 68.8 sec

So all the fighter/bombers out there better watch out :D because you are in range for a long way when dealing with 5 inch guns of a Battle Group

thanks guys i appreciate the help with the range. thought it was around 10k. one thing about the ship drivers bringing the cv in to 1k of a base that i like is that once you get your gun "on" a base/town target it's dead! plus as a gunner it is kind of nice to see the effect your rounds are havin close up.

My reply was to a reply replying, if you follow me, about cv's getting to 1k of land presumably so as 5" can see land based targets.

Yes the thread is about 5" and yes Auto ranger still works for 5" but I have no clue as to when it kicks in for the 5" as I consider the 5" ineffectual for TOWN or field destruction.

I make the point that 8" or 5" alot of folk don't know, understand or otherwise can't be arsed to KNOW about the AUTO RANGER.

My experience of 5" is thus :-  you can get air kills with good lead and elevation from JUST beyond Icon range approx 7.  If you are the only gunner weather 5" or 8" you will be rewarded proxy kills from auto ack.  Usually all within Icon range but I have picked up proxy from beyond Icon.  My front end maybe ?  Don't know.

PT kills are found beyond their Icon range to.  Usually get PT kills starting from 4.6 but I do this free hand without Auto Ranger.  The way I range PT's is by firing AA shells to get air burst over con then switch to HE shells intermittently.... HE shells can be found with "Backspace" for those that don't know.

CV kills can be made with the 5" HE shells and I prefere to use AUTO RANGER for consistancy.  The only time I use 5" for CV sinking is when our cruiser has been sunk and we can't, for whatever reason, get our CV away.

I could go on about effective 8" gunnery with or without the top secret hardly used "Z" + "]" shooting at towns fields and the harder to hit SB.  I could go on about effective CV sinking using the SB but that does require the top secret "Z" + "]" so I'll stop here.

Bye the way  Happy New Year to ALL in ACES HIGH
