been playing for close to a year, been through all the tech problems, new computer, vid card, joystick etc. Thanks to all your great help the game has been working perfect for quite awhile now. I've been logging alot of hours lately and realized that the further I get into the game the farther away I get from understanding how any of it works. I can fly straight but the minute I turn someone shoots me down. If I do get behind someone I can empty the guns and hit nothing. I read and studied how to bomb, thinking maybe that would be better, but after many hours of practicing the bombs never get even close. Tonite by luck I got on a radio station that people were planning a mission and like normal I was left standing in the tower confuzed after listening to instructions still not knowing what to do. The radio has been explained to me 3 times and I'm still lost. also I was able to listen to alot of talk on the radio, people explaining to each other how to do certain moves, and not a word it of makes any sense. I've decided to quit trying to master the game, that will never happen the learning curve is just to much. I've never spent this much time trying to learn something with not improving. The one thing I've done right is picking nostick as my call sign, it defintely fits! I'll still fly, everyone in the community is great and it is fun. I guess some of us have to be drones, I'll just be the senior drone.

What you need to do is get someone to take you to the Training Arena. There; with no interuptions I believe you will catch on faster. Trying to do it in the Main Arena with all the other distractions around makes it a little harder to pick up on things. There are tons of guys that will take the time to go to the TA and help you out. Good Luck, I am sure the light will click on for you one day and you will say Dam....this is so simple. :)

i will gladly help you out in TA / DA. Seems a shame that you have made all this effort for a year and feel that you are not making any sort of improvement. If you see me online just send me a message.

I'm not real good but I will be glad to help. you can usually find me in the CT and I'm usually an axis player. The CT is a much less populated arena when you log on it's the third one down the "Combat Theater" I'm storch there as well. I'll be glad to pass on the little I know.
Good luck and happy new year

Well I may have gotten you started a bit with the radio last night.
Looks like we have more work to do though.
If you'd like we can discuss some of this via email before we try to make it happen in planes.
ghosth@hitechcreations.com
should reach me.
Or you can just keep popping into the TA and hope to find a trainer on.
There are several good trainers that really can help you "put it all together".
Virtually NO one manages to learn all that needs to be learned here on his own. We've all had help getting here of one kind or another. So no shame, lets just get to work & get you having fun!
-
Yup, TA is the place to be. Most players think it's for the newbies who have been here for a few weeks but it ain't. Many a nights a vet will drop in along with all the trainers to help. Also a lot of the newbies actually become decent sticks in a short time due to the training and could actually help you too.
-
I am average, but been at this a long time. Be glad to help out also.
jwg11@mlode.com
Also have some good ACM films on our site that would help. I can send you the link if you want, just e-mail me.
-
I'd be glad to help. I'm in the TA lots, but if you see me flyin' in the MA just say something, we'll head to the TA/DA and figure some of this out for y'as.

Yup, GhostH taught me how to get the plane in the air, and got me started with basic ACM.
And I don't know if Bigmax still plays or not. But look him up. He taught me how to kill people and evade them.
-
Let everyone know when you are normally on and where in the world you're located and which country you normally play for and then we can keep an eye out for you next time you're on.
It does take a while to get the hang of things - I'm sure with a little help you'll be far better and enjoyign AH more in a month or so.

Everyone in this game hits a wall. Often.
I'm sure other people have given the following advice, but what the hell:
- Pick one plane and stick with it. I recommend the P-51D. It's fast enough to let you get out of trouble, has plenty of ammo, great visibility, and great ballistics. Spit IX is a good 2nd choice, but it's all to easy to get tempted into turning (and then dieing). Pay attention to *acceleration* - level and in a dive. Acceleration is what lets you close for a kill, or get out of harms way. Speed, climb rate, and turning are vital - but how quickly you can get in or out of trouble (i.e. accelerate) is what will govern a lot of your decisions in combat.
- Practice shooting drones offline. A lot - many veteran players routinely practice drone shooting offline to keep their "touch". Gunnery in AH isn't like a lot of games. You can't just put the sight on something and make it blow up. In your head you have to "see" the time of fligt of the rounds from your guns. That's why the P-51D (or any US plane, really) is good to start with. The .50 cal has great ballistics - so this calculation is much easier. Learn to shoot from within D.300 ... a common mistake is to start firing from D.400 or more and odds of missing are tons higher out there. If you aren't using tracers - start.
- The "die the moment you turn" is most likely because you are losing track of the enemy. Try the following offline exercise: perform as many manouevers as you can think of (loops, turns, Immel's, etc.) while keeping the water tower at the field in sight. Most of the experienced players "know" where their own plane is instinctively - and concentrate on where the enemy is. If you don't know where the enemy plane is, you're in trouble.
- Film everything - watch from the enemy point of view.
- If you want to feel like you're contributing, load rockets on your P51 and tag along with guys attacking a base. Just kill a few AAA or city buildings. You can practice this offline real easy - these are stationary targets, if you can hit 'em offline you can hit 'em online.

JB73, that's an awesome list. I bet a lot of two week players would find a tutorial covering those basics invaluable. It's easy to think this stuff is second nature when we've been doing it for years, but I recall how daunting it all seemed when I made the move from Air Warrior way back in the late beta days.

Yup, agree with lev.
There wasn't in game vox back when i joined.
So, when it came out. I was learning how to use it just like everyone else was.

Jb73's list should be made a sticky

A Training film!! that newbies could watch on htc film viewer to help with the basics. They could view it over and over if needed, then a Trainer would be able to (fine tune) a newbie once they viewed the film on the basics. If a new player knows nothing at all, or never flew a flying game on a computer maybe , a dead give away that they dont know zip is when they are asked if they have a joystick and they say..( joystick? whats that?) lmao!
It can be tuff for the newbie and the trainer to get anywhere if your starting from scratch, unless you have several hours to train and learn (and a ton of patience) I think it would relieve newbies from the stress of getting the basics down, without having to retain all the trainers verbal or typed text information that is not there for future use.
I had suggested in the other forum but.... no reply.. everyone's different, some learn fast, some dont. some people can explain stuff real well, some cant ect.... a in your face training film may help newbies to jump in sooner and enjoy the game! Without the usual help which is most people saying, Go to the training arena!!!, because there is not always a helper there, understanding it cant be manned 24/7 but the game runs 24/7, you can sign up to play anyday anytime. might help retain new players that might be lost otherwise.

Or put together something like one of those WW2 training movies in MovieMaker using export video, screen shots, etc. Get some voice over clips from R. Lee to punctuate the important parts. Hehe.

Very cool.
I play as Skeeter0 and have been on and off this game since 2001. I am still, IMHO, the worst fighter pilot in the game. I feel I am above average at gunnery, jabo, troop killing, goon flying, and buffs....but ACM means Always Chump Meat to me.
I am very impressed with all of you who offered to help in the TA. It takes time, your time, away from the little time we have to play. That's impressive.
I think I will try to catch some of you in the TA sometime....and thanks in advance.
-
/thank you all for the compliment....
i made that list as my guide to what i train a new player on.
just spent 9 hours
again 9 hours
with JB91 a new player to the game, saw the commercial, was here 2 weeks, and tonihgt he had to "subscribe"
what makes me sad was the time in the TA. there was a guy sadly asking about his engine cutting out, was a spit I of course, but hard to explain when they dont know how to properly communicate fully.
if i won the lottery i could spend 9 hours every day with each person new to the game, sadly i can not.
unfortunatly the learning curve of the details of the game ar so HUGE that without that time i would guess 60% or more would get frustrated and quit.
part of the reason i wrote that basic structure was to me it was intuitive in the steps taken, part by part. second i was hoping maybe the "trainers" would take it in, and all follow the same regimine. that way there'd be consistancy in what they teach. 1 trainer could leave, another pick up and ask "where did the last guy leave off?"
the new trainer could review and pick up right there.
i honestly believe with a structure like that many would be more into joining the game full time, and would all have the tools to succede in the game
here's a link to the outline form for printing puropses if anyone likes:

BTW, you don't have to 'catch' someone. Ask in the Main Arena if someone is willing to work with you in the Training Arena. I have no problem with playing target for someone trying to learn the game (why not, I do it enuff for the good players :D).

Excellent idea about putting together a training film. I think it would be neat to take that 1 step further. Get one of these guys that make movies to put a training movie together.
They could go through JB73's steps and narriate how things work. for example: show the clip board and walk a person through how to tune a radio channel, or how and what to click to get to the area to set your convergience. Things of this nature. By sitting there watching a movie and getting a visual, it would (imo) cut there learning curve 3 fold.
Anyway with tactics idea of a AH film, this idea just popped into my head. Maybe one of these good movie making guys can see about making this idea come a reality. (Well thats if you guys think it's a good idea)
:)

Another suggestion is to find a squad to join. As you can see by 73's list, many squads have a training regiment.
PS. Now you know why Jbz are the killers they are MUHAHAHAHA!!!

JB73, I find your list excellent however . . it ignores hardware concerns. I find newbies that dont know what a POV is or are trying to learn the game without a rudder. The basics kill em. I had one guy that would fly with his arms crossed cause he had to use one side of the keyboard while flying with his joystick. No wonder he never got kills.
Nostick, I think I know what you're after and it aint easy. It's an epipheny, a moment where all of a sudden you go OH!! and a couple of pieces fall into place. Once those first couple fall into place, the rest come in time. You just need a new view, some data. I'll keep an eye out for you in the TA.
-
I learned the most from watching films . i watched tons of them in trail mode .and dicifered what angles/speed/distances the planes were flying at and thru there manuvers within my "Circle of Fight"
I always took note of what i did wrong when i lost and tried something alittle bit different the next time .
say they expect me to drop down on them
I'd go up or extend instead , never the same thing .
Also go duel 1 vs 1 with someone that will help you learn , talk about it .
stick to one plane til you can handle it well , they try each of the main rides you see alot . this way you know how they fly and learn when to exploit there weaknesses.
-
That was a great post JB73! I remember back in that other game, a guy named Brooke P. Anderson edited a manual on how to play. It was a good read, and always inspired me to 'get back into the fight' after I was shot down without a clue.
Maybe there is someone in AH that will take on that task? It would certainly 'cement' AH as the paramount WW2 flight sim of the 21st century. JB73's list would make a great outline for such a manual.
Just my opinion of course. Btw, this BBS is what helps fuel my reentry into AH land after I get frustrated and want to give up, not that that hasn't happened. Afterall, I am Malta1 in the game flying an old F4U-1. It's a fun ride when flown properly, although I think most planes will fit that description.
Regards,
Malta
p.s. one (of several) concepts to understand is that you have to fire where the enemy plane "will be" and predict the future by a few seconds. A savvy pilot will not to be where most would expect and will stay alive longer. Flims of savvy pilots help a lot.
Woah... didn't notice this thread was over two years old!!

I've known of JB73's list for sometime now, we have even talked via email.....and best I recall he posted it in the Training forum a year or 2 ago for newcomers and old flyers alike
the film idea/movie clip idea is a great one........
as for Brooke's old AW manual, I am curious as to how long it actually took him to write it / then get it right "to his liking"
alot of things have been asked for over the years here in Aces high, alot fo things have "been in the works" for a good while here for Aces High.....
I truely hope this is "The Year" that all those things planned, being worked on, projects developed/made are able to come to light for all.......
just because some things are not openly talked about, as what has been said here, does not mean that the plans for them being available are not in the works or near completion...
me personally, wanted what has been asked for here like 4 years ago, but as we all know anything takes time, and most of this community uses that time they have left to fly and participate ingame, some of us divide that time up making films/movies/scenarios/snapshots/koth/training/terrains/skins etc.... so there is the reason ( still no excuse just the same ) but still the reason why things take so long to being completed....
and all the ones who volunteered to help, that is truly appreciated!!! thank you! ~S~
nostick, if you want to set up a time to work with a Trainer email us at trainers@flyaceshigh.com with your geological location, times you fly and someone will be glad to meet ya and help you, sir...... that is an open invitation to everyone btw........ see ya up.....

What was the penalty for dragging out old threads? It used to be listening to Arlo sing, but with his absence we lack a good scary penalty. Maybe TC could sing to him? :) There's a scary thought lol.

nostick...ghosth got me started...he is patient and able to explain things very well. I recommend you spend a few hours with him. Make a list of all your questions before you do though, you will inevitably forget to ask a bunch when you are online.
Don't give up...this game can be very frustrating but soon it will be like a lightbulb going on and you will "get it". Even then you will still get shot down alot...there are alot of really good sticks in the MA.
