Kev ... you have gun powder residue where the 303 guns are positioned on the Spit V and no residue where the .50 cal is positioned ... it might be picky, but it just doesn't look right.

Yup, but it depends which 'loadout' you choose.
For the 2x20s, 4x303's they are in the right place.
Agreed for the 2x20s, 2x50s they aren't.

Looks like model is based on the 'e' (universal) wing, so either would be correct. Still like to see a 'c' wing (4x20mm).

Who uses the .303s anyway?  Why not put the residue where the .50s are?

Hi Kev,

Looks great.  Glad to see it made it in.  As for Spit XIVs, sadly there weren't many out of the ordinary camo jobs for the XIV.  It's either the SEAC stuff or the RAF basic camo.

I do wonder if you could get away with doing the paint job on RN201 a restored Spit XIV.  It's a 41 Squadron bird and the paint scheme is historic, but it was worn by a Spit 21.

I think it would look great if hitech would let it through though.

Whoops -
'a' wing - 8 x 303
'b' wing - 4 x 303 and 2 x 20 initially only 20's
'c' wing (universal old) wing - 8x 303 OR 4x303 and 2x20 OR 2 x50 and 2x20 OR 4 x 20
'e' (universal new) wing - 4 x 20 or 2 x 20 and 2 x 50

We debated this one on the Flypast Forum and I think we finally figured out that there was no C wing designation for any Spitfires after the Spit Vc.  The XII, IX, VIII etc didn't designate a C wing, only a Universal Wing.  The E Wing was in fact a seperate designation.

Lots of folks chimed in to a very good discussion.

Thanks Dan.
Reading that forum came up with a few questions-

AH Spit 5 - Could have option for 4x303 and 2x20 or 2x50 and 2x20 as per the mk9. Could also add 4x20 option.

AH Spit 9 - Could have 4x20 option added.

One thing or did I misunderstand -
There was an option for 4x20 AND 2x50 on the Spit9 and later 'e' wing?

The Spit V never carried 50 cals outside of a specially modified high alt Vb that was done locally in the Med to chase Ju86Ps as they did their high alt recon runs.  That Spit had 1 50 cal in each wing if I remember right.

Generally it was 8 303, 2 20mm and 4 303, or 4 20mm for the Spit V

Spit IX had 2 20mm and 4 303, 2 50 cal and 2 20mm or 4 20mm.

That being said, there seems to be no indication of any operational use of 4 20mm with the Spit IX.  I've seen an image of an Aussie flown Spit VIII with 4 20mm, but it wasn't done in squadron strength, just a special for chasing Dinahs

I have seen a number of photos of Spit Vs with 4 20mm.  2 Squadron SAAF used them a lot well into 45 in the ground attack role.  This was in the Med and they also had the large Volks filter under the nose so it must have been one slow Spit :)

As for the E wing.  I think they finally decided the best compromise of hitting power came with the 2 20mm and 2 50 cals.  I also think it was because they added the hardpoint on the wing for bombs or rockets as well so having the guns outboard of this was not a good idea in terms of strength of the wing.

They'd been having problems with IXs modified for divebombing having the wings fold up if the bomb didn't come off.  The E wing was stronger then the Universal or C Wing to carry the added bombs or rockets.

Also read Dan that the 'e' wing had problems with heating for the 4x20mm option, so maybe thats why it was never really used in that config.
Still think we should get the 4x20mm options and drops for the Spit 5 though.

Wish I could do bare metal skins, I'd have a crack at the RN one.
Just gotta finish up the "Pink" Spit and an RAF Lib I had shelved for a while.
