After a bit of interteam conflict last night I have come to a point where I would like to ask the penut gallery what your reason for playing is.
Let me give you a run down of what happened last night.
A mission was flying out of a base that, at the time, was not under attack. As soon as that mission left the ground and got clear of the base the airfield came under heave attack. These 20 or so guys could have doubled back and fended off the attack and still be able to complete their origional mission goals of another base capture.
After I was squelched by one team mate and hurassed by several others for pointing this out I flew into the base that was under attack and helped defend it.
Funny thing is the mission that abandoned the base failed to secure the field capture on the other end.
So now to my question...
Do you play this game with the end goal of your team wining the war and moving on to another map? Or do you simply get in the game to chat with cyber friends and shoot down the occasional enemy?
I think that in some cases the people on one side of this question fuel the frustrations of the other side. Lets talk about it.
-
Depends on my mood.
Most days though I try to help where I can.
-
I play to get shot down. I'm very good at it. :D
Glove
-
We should wing-up Glove. We could get shot down together.
Like Wolf says.
-
What Wolf said, would probably be the only truth. Mood plays a big part.
-
I'm also of the "Play to get shot down" crowd as I am also very good at it :)
The 'war' really never ends so getting all caught up in chasing the reset doesn't really interest me much to be honest. I'll defend a base or help in the attack on another, but I don't pay much attention to the overall 'war'

Agreed on all points. I play this game to enjoy simulated air combat, not to win a war.

i play to win always. Its just that the term 'win' can be a very different thing than 'winning the reset'.

I play to win the war!!!!! I have won 3 trips to Hawii by winning the war already. I want to be a Gold member win the war. Anyone who has wone 5 trips to Hawii gets to be a gold member.
Ohhh and I got a nice watch for taking a big zone base.
So yeah as long as I can win all this great stuff I'm here to win the war :rofl
Ohhh yeah and all those perk points I was able to redeem and get a nice Marlboro rain slicker and one of those vibrator things.
-
I like to play for fun. Most of the time that is fighter v. fighter, but every once in awhile doing a quick jabo or a goon hunt is fun too. The variety spices it up.
I up at capped bases a lot. I don't really know why, as I don't really care if the base gets taken or not unless there's a cv right off it and there's a good fight brewing.
As far as winning the reset... Nah, I can wait until Wednesday.

Puff ...
Ya gotta understand that these guys were doing exactly what they wanted to be doing at that point in time. They made a plan and stuck to it. Their "mission" was base capture and anything outside of that ... well ... really should be the responsibilty of all other countrymen who did not choose to participate in the mission. They were doing their part for the greater cause as far as they were concerned. Trying to tell them otherwise .... is not wise.

I could care less if the war is won or not (I am tired of going to Hawaii and have a closet full of gold watches). I do enjoying chatting with my cyber friends, but I strive to shoot down more than just an "occasional" enemy. I am here for the fight not the war.
-
Points taken and my views have changed. Thanks for the input.
-
i play to have fun first and foremost, dont care whether i win or lose if i find a fun fight...
...if i cant find anyone that wants to fight and have fun, i play to kill dweebs.
-
See my signature! :D
-
Ah the old why fight and lets capture the undefended base horde... They should have doubled back but ofcourse thats risking being in a fight.
Puff I would have doubled back and squashed the hording bastids if you would have called out S.H.E.E.P but alas I was probably getting shot down in that wacky p38 by some other horde...
Oh and I play to win......
WIN THE WAR AGAINST THE HORDING BASTIDS!!!!!

I play to crush my enemies before me and here the laminations of their sheep:aok

I really have fun doing three things.
I play for the fight. Win or most of the time lose. I am here for the dog fighting.
I also - from now on - will make a point of sinking the CV at any cost if I get hit by a 5" dweeb while in a dog fight at 200ft of the water 5k away from a the CV group. (Not if I get too close to the group due to my mistake)
Also, I try to chase and engage people that run for ever or run in the ack. If you make no attempt at fighting other than a HO, I will chase till I am out of fuel. (If u r out of ammo or plane damage after a fight you will get an ). Nothing like upping from a vulched field and hunting the vulcher down for 2 or 3 sectors and hopefully vulch him while he is trying to crash land his vulches, muahahahahah
hmm, maybe I need some help :o
-
I am only on to shoot at the red planes.
lazs
-
Ive got to agree with Wolf, mood plays a big part...
BUT...
My main reason for playing is play to learn.. I play to learn to fly WW2 planes... Winning the engagement Im in is always a focus point.. If I cant win the engagement I need to get out of it...
Yes I do flee.. But I do that because else I will be just "rush and spawn"ing it, which doesnt teach me anything about flying...
Though some days I feel like winning a base is fun and then I help out where I can with what I can.
But never ever is winning more important then FUN.. FUN to both me and the guys I fight....

I play to role-play to the best of my ability an actual WWII fighter pilot. I re-create in my mind the same fear of death and desire to cause death to my adversary as I imagine the real aces of WWII might have had. I play to kill without being killed myself. When operating as a part of a unit larger than just myself I extend my penchant for survival to those in my unit, whether that is my wingman or my entire squadron on squadnights or even Rookland as a whole on RJO nights.

I play to win 65% and play to fight 35%. Both give me enjoyment.
Capturing a base is great fun. capturing the RIGHT base is excellent:cool:
I like high Alt buff runs in formation with others and solo. Love the Lancs load out. Have some secrets (knowledge) up my sleeve that i'm not sharing;)
I really enjoy a good TB fight especially against err the more experienced big sticks. Know most tricks now but am limited with my twisty stick so the CH ftr stick and pedals are on the way:aok

I have fun no matter what I do in this game, and I like to win. Not that I do very often.
BUT...
I generally play OFFENSE. Base defending a base that is under attack by a squad/horde/bunch/group/younameit is counterproductive, in my book. Taking off and fighting over my own base means I HAVE ALREADY LOST THE ENGAGEMENT, no matter how many I shoot down, or land.
I said it in another thread, and I'll say it again. The worst place to defend a base is above it. The bombs are on their way, the jabos are diving, and you can't stop it. Shooting them down on egress or on the third pass is ego gratifying, but doesn't save the base.
Intercept them BEFORE they arm the bombs.
-
dont have time to play to "win", i just log in and shoot stuff.
-
I fly for fun and to win ...... But I would have turned Back to defend the Base...........Thats Fun. But then again I fly as a Knight we defend alot >)

I think that in some cases the people on one side of this question fuel the frustrations of the other side. Lets talk about it.
Well to start with here, I think your assuming something that might or might not be so.
The guys headed out could have been doing far more of a defense by attacking the NME base than you were by hanging around trying to "defend" against the attack.
I have noticed a tendency for everyone to scream "where`s our defense?' "Defend , guys , defend".
A lot of these guys doing the screaming is upping an attacked base, climbing to 1K or less and running around in circles, chasing bogs from one side of the base to the other when the bogs come in with alt and speed. That`s just what their doing.....chasing and no catching with the end results of getin slapped down after the incoming have hit base targets. Rinse and repeat until the base is captured.
I`m a firm believer of cutting off the snakes head instead of the tail. In other words the attack is the best form of defense. If your floundering around low, like a ruptured duck, while the NME keeps coming with a steady attack from above you are doomed. DOOMED I SAy! :D
They aren`t going to quit coming if the pickings are easy. Counter attack, steal their cheese, kidnap their sheep, anything besides being an easy target.
Assuming that someone headed out on an attack mission with ONLY the capture being the goal is also a mistake. Denial to the enemy can stop an attack when nothing else can.
At ease. Carry on. That is all. :p
-
I fly for that perfect sortie, where 4 or 5 badguys are above me and I'm alone. I put the wheels down with all of them in the bag.
But 1 or 2 is enough to release the balloons..
-
Win!!
-
Dedalos, when you find a shrink, let me know, I could use the same one. :D
Killing guys that run away because they don't want to die because they want to keep a high kill/death ratio is very gratifing.
People that just want to cherry pick and HO is fine by me. Just don't do it to me. I don't want to play with you, so go away.
I play to fight, whether I have the advantage or disadvantage, it's all the same to me.
-
That group of guys your refering to.. help your team more then you know. They also focus on doing "FUN" missions
Face it, Your a Map worrier, and Map worriers rarely have fun.

I play to play. After a couple map victorys it loses its appeal. I do like the odd night everyone seems to be on the same page and "rolls son!". But normally Im not interested in the frantic GOGOGO that it takes to capture in here.
I much prefer getting a few guys in a mission and carrying it out to a successful rtb with some kills. Other than that simply going out to find someone to fight is good enuff for me.
-
play to win...
of course i still love vulchin and spawn camping but overall im there to help the knights cause
-
I generally fly for the reasons Lazs stated. To me that is fun and challenging. However, I could easily get more into winning the war if it involved a real challenge.
I played JR High and high school football and tremendously enjoyed the competition and winnning the game. You had even sides, and you won or lost based on solid teamwork, individual skills and leadership both on the field and from the coaches. In high school we were typically 500 for the season. But, each of those wins meant something, and even the losses were O.K. as long as you put up a good fight.
In here, "winning" seems to be mostly about grossly uneven numbers and a minimal amount of organizational skill to make sure bubba brought the goon. I get no sense of accomplishment in this style of game play. It would be like winning every game in a football season, but doing so with an extra 5 players on the field every game. Who cares.
[edit: there are certainly exceptions to the rule, but IMO 75 percent of the "war winning" centers on this gameplay format today.]

To get back to the orig. question. I would have been one of the handful of defenders at the base under attack, thinking from the initial bar dar that a real brawl was brewing, only to watch most of the friendly teammates fly away from the fight :)
Runaway! Runaway!

I play for fun... but when the squad is on, I play to get the job done. I really dont care about score or anything.... and my score shows it!
-
I play to have fun. Not really concerned about winning the map. There are verying degrees of what is fun though.
I flew a few attack missions with the Bish the last few nights and they were fun. I learned a lot about working together. Something we Bish need to do more of. (but it is fun being the underdog)
I agree that the best defence is a strong offense. Hit them where they are comming from and you won't have to chase them over your base.
I also agree with what's been said here regarding base defense. Most of it is far to close to the base and just chasing incoming ponies, doras, 110s, etc.. Even though I've done this many times myself. I've upped to defend a base and went out hi and far to intercept the incomming planes and found myself all alone. Hi cap can be dull for a while but if your serious about being the last line of defense it's what needs to be done.
As far as turning around and coming back, their mission was to attack the enemy base not defend the base they left from. If I was not part of their mission and upped from the same field I would try and defend the departing mission so they could get out and deliver the goods to the enemy then turn my attention to my base. The base they are hitting just may be where the troops are comming from to capture your base.

The problem puff is defining winning....
Personally I think all the digital dirt warriors are losers before they even take off. I could care less who "wins" the war or what anyones "score" is. I've got a pair of clips at home I'll post here to show why I play....
-
There was time in AH when I thought winning the war was cool. I'd help in whatever way they needed.
NOW , no.
Buildings up? Not my problem. FH's up? Cool I can get a kill or 2. VH up and some FP Pansie killing everyone? Building bashers should have thought about that already. No Goon? I laff and wonder. They are the ones with the brains and bombs andf didn't think to bring the goon or get one at least standing by.
ME? I shoot every red plane I can down. I have even resorted to vulhing more than I used to. My fun is MY fun and I'll play MY way. If I join a mission , tho not often , I fly the fighters or I don't join.
This really stems from being yelled at called names and a few other things by a few ARM CHAIR generals whom will remain nameless.
I think the knights know who a couple of them are.
My JOB/Fun is to shoot any red plane down. If that helps with the "Winning the war" then so be it. But the rest of it...well....Others need there fun to..and they can have it.
-
I play to be shot down by Jamusta, repeatedly with occasional help from turdball er furball.
-
I play to shootdown enemy planes, tho i do like conan's philosophy- "Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their women"
-
the only thing thats important is the struggle, the outcome is irrelevant as long as both parties gave up a good fight till the end. the only thing that really pisses me of is people who let me saddle up at 800 or so, then keep me there, running in a straight line with occasional turns to try and HO...i always get em, but a 2 day n00b gives a better fight than that.
though tis always nice to be a part of nicely executed teamwork completly crushing a similar sized but unorginized group, or better yet, a larger sized and moderatly orginized group.

I play for the win and i'm always a team player. I'll fly any thing but what I fly depends on my mood. It's kind of like a football game. You can run a bunch of plays that you hope will get you in to the endzone or you can just run around the field like a chicken with his head cut off. So it's not the winning or losing the bothers me so much as its how the game is being played and nothing infuriates me more than watching the knights run a round like a chicken with their heads cut off. So the better question maybe are you a team player not? You can still have your kind of fun and still be a team player. It's easy to say that "I could careless about anyones elses game play" and "how dare you try and coach me on how to help my country mates because you don't pay my $14.95" but the people who say that need to realize that what they do or don't do effects everyone else in this game. If I wanted to play solo, I would play falcon 3.0 and fly against computer generated bogies.
