Press Image of Gun Owner Not Far Off, Except for All Those Women

NEW YORK A Gallup Poll released this morning reveals that the average American owns 1.7 guns, with the average gun owner possessing 4.4 of them. The press is quick to promote stereotypes of the average gun owner as a white male, most likely Republican, living in a rural area or the South. But how well does reality match the image? The new Gallup Poll shows that the stereotype is not that far off, but with several twists.
For one thing, one out of three American women say they own a gun. That's not much below the overall mark of 40% for all American adults.
As for other elements of the stereotype: More than half (53%) of Republicans own guns, compared with 36% of political independents and 31% of Democrats. Whites are more likely than nonwhites to own (44% and 24%, respectively), according to Gallup.
Residents of the South are significantly more likely than those living in other regions to report owning a gun. More than half of those living in rural areas (56%) own a gun, compared with 40% of suburbanites and 29% of those living in urban areas.
From 1959 through 1993, an average of 47% of Americans reported having a gun in their homes. Since that time, household gun ownership has dropped to an average of 40%.
Gallup also asked those with guns in their households about the total number of guns they have. A majority of gun owners (62%) have more than one gun on their properties, including 29% who say they have five or more guns.
But do guns make you safer? “Americans are divided on the topic,” Gallup reports, with 46% saying that having a gun in the home makes it a more dangerous place to be, and 42% saying guns make households safer.

I'm part of the 29% who say they have five or more guns (5.2 guns actually) :) Maybe 7.2 by the end of the month once I get my materials to CMP, or 8.2 if I also get that Russian capture K98k for $220.
Part of the 36% independents; 40% suburbanites; somewhere in between on the safer/more dangerous argument. Safer in my house, but plenty of yahoos who learned all they know about guns from TV.

Are we just talking about "Legal" handguns?
;)

LOL. Ya, I'm sure all the homeys in the hood are going to participate in a gallup poll.

I can see how some people might lie and say they didn't have a gun but not many would lie and say they had one.
I can see what you are laughing about curval... with 40% of Americans owning guns and 42% saying that it made them safer that means that.... allmost all the people who don't have a clue about guns think they are dangerous to own.

I have a gun. It makes my house a far more dangerous place to be if you show up unannounced in the middle of the night wearing a ski mask.

Polls always crack me up, but what`s really funny to me is some folks actualy believe they are on the up and up. Usualy polls turn out with the results or beliefs of those running them.
............................. ............................. ........
Not to hijack, but just thought of something I thought was hilarious.
A while back I was working on a bike for a friend. Over near the end of nowhere in the country I know a guy that has about 2 acres of salvage bikes he sells parts from . These folks have been known to have the occasional scrape with the law. I cruised over right about the time he was locking up. We decided to hunker down and palaver over a l`il Who Hit John.
He was telling me how crazy his brother`s wife was. It seems that one of the brother`s ex-wives had showed up at the brother`s house and the current wife and her had gotten into an argument. The ex had gotten shot in the leg during this and the current wife had been charged with the shooting. He said the defense lawyer had spent a lot of time tutoring the wife, who was denying the shooting, on how to conduct herself in court.
To make a long story short, everything seemed to be going good until court day. The wife walked into the courtroom wearing a T-shirt with the picture of a large bore handgun pointing out with a hand wrapped around it. The words on the shirt stated : "I don`t call 911". :rofl
