Well as an amateur astronomer, using laser beams to point out formations or other things in the sky is not uncommon.. Who knows..

Great, send a laser out there and have some spaceship use it as a targeting beacon and blast us all to kingdom come, yeah, good thinking.

He was released on $100,000 bail. He could get up to 25 years in prison and fines of up to $500,000.

Holy watermelon batman...  That is WAY outta hand.. Especially in the absence of some form of damage..

Was the patriot act really needed here? Seems the article almost attempts to lift the act once again on some sort of pedistal as if it saved us from yet another terrible disaster..

I wonder what class of laser it was.  This isn't some kind of pocket laser pointer.  And this isn't a new concern... well... maybe in the press.

The class IV LASER we use is licensed and tracked by the state.  The reasons this is done is because of the exact things you're reading about right now.  It's been that way since 2000 at least.

Hell... even using a laser pointer you make sure to avoid people's eyes... just for the sake of safety.  This guy was using something much more powerfull to light up aircraft.  What the hell was he thinking?  And why would anyone think this just meritted a slap on the hand?

I feel much safer now..

Ya, and you'll be the first guy crying when someone w/ a lazer causes an airliner full of passengers to crash into your home.

If someone shoots a hail bullets into a crowd of  people and all the bullets miraculously hit belt buckles and purses, would it be  out of  hand to charge the shooter w/ attempted murder? (could carry a 25 year sentence)

Nobody got hurt.. this time.  Punish the guy severly w/in the limits of what is lawful.  It's called deterrent.

Just have him go to the Lab where they make the lazer, and have them aim it at his face for an hour, for the next 25 years.

Oh, and double for his daughter, the true mastermind behind this terrorist plot. She's like the cardboard cutout girl in the Read and Recognize exercise from the MIB documentary (no, that WASNT a movie, fellas...wake up!)

Been that way since at least '89. I briefly had a lighting (concert) biz back then. When I was looking into adding a class IV argon (green) you had to file tons of paperwork with one of the fed agencies, including diagrams showing where the beams would go to prove they wouldn't be a danger to peoples eyes.

I would give him a year as a determent for being an idiot.  Unless it's uncovered that he IS actually a terrorits.

was in this thread:

http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=138930

the movie shows a green laser the size of a small hand held flashlight burning a hole in a plastic solo cup in about 2 seconds.

they are powered by 2 C batteries, and supposedly can shine 50 miles or more.

he's not selling them lasers anymore.

this whole thing is rather silly.
obvioulsy the guy is just a scapegoat. locking him up is not likely to discourage terrorists (or homegrown wackos) from pointing these devices at planes.
in fact, with the media hype, I can imagine kids hiding in the bushes at night around small airports or by roads and pointing these things at planes or cars.

So the possibility of haveing a laser pointer powerd and customized to accept the power and built large enough for an engine that can run a spaceship. There will be star wars fun and star trek fun...
