Any chance we could get the skins file updated on the download page? The ingame download is causing me big time stutter and mini-freeze problems.

Your not alone.

I am making a point of leaving the comp logged into AH today as when the skins are downloading its a game i struggle to enjoy.

Same here.

I was talking with Skuzzy online and the cause may be W98 thread managing. I was also suspecting on the "small" but continuous disk or disk cache writes.

Whatever it is, I got a noticeable frame-rate drop, mini-freezes, stutter, etc while getting skins.

We update the skin download file once a month.  After today, we will be adding new packs each month and leave the base pack alone.
This means you would have to download all the packs in the download list, but for those who get the CD, for example, they do not need the entire list of skins, only those which were added after the CD was sent to them.


Oh, the file has been updated on the downloads page.

Could the skin packages somehow be integrated into the auto-updater? That is, when you log in it could ask you if you wanted to d/l and install the latest skin pack, or if you wanted the skins to download while you fly. That kind of seems like the easiest thing for everyone, no?

Thses new skins are the best thing to happen in AH in quite some time...:)

My faves(prolly no-poop's/nomades skins)...

 Silver skinned P47d11
 Skull&Cross Bones Yellow Nosed P47d40
 Green P51d
 Fw190A5 with the cool yellow/green camo

DokGonzo, as you might have already noticed, the skins now occupy around 160MB.  Making someone wait for that download, before they could play, would probably cause extreme frustration.

Most players have no issues at all with the background downloads.  If they do, then they can grab the skins from the download page.  We also put all the skins on the CD we mail out, as well as all the terrains.

This does not mean we are not looking at other options here, but that is a bit out of my realm.

I think skins should update like the maps do before you enter the arena. and if its done nightly as opposed to all 20 or however many are released that would cut the DL time

Hell its almost a 2 minute wait from the time you clcck on the main arena to the time you actually enter it now.
Might as well be doing something useful.

Me, I get mini lags when a new res arrives. Not a big issue but just enough to be annoying
