So i treated myself and bought a geforce 6600 GT to replace my radeon 9000 pro. After about 5 or 10 mins of playing my PC will lockup. A friend told me the PC may be overheating, i checked the temp and my PC is at 47 degrees C. So what is the temp i should be looking for + if it is the cause do i just chuck in a fan or two?
Errrmmm...also any other suggestions what could be causing the prob?
-
47c isnt a bad temp at all while gamming . so i doublt its a temp problem .
it sounds more like i could be a powersupply
or a driver, ram, irq, virous type issue .

I'm using the 6.6.9.3 drivers.
I've done a dxdiag to paste here, but i don't know what parts i need to post.
-
i had the same problem and after running a complete system diagnostic i found that my system wasnt the problem.....it was the drivers.
i installed the 66** (newest) and i got random lock ups. lost jets and tigers. after i screwed with my pc for a few hours i figured out that rolling your drivers back to 61.76 worked. i was even getting max framrates after roll back and NO lockups at all.
try it

Well i downloaded the 71.24 beta drivers.
I don't normally use beta drivers but since they are specifically for the 6600 i gave them a try.
All is well now. :)

Guess i was a little premature.... still getting freezes. I played AH for maybe 30 mins and didn't get any so i assumed it was fixed. Well i was wrong- and judging by the nvidia forums i'm not the only one. :( If i can't fix it within a few days i guess i'll have to return the card.

Thrila, use the 61.77 drivers. They work fine. I use the Omega drivers, but you can use the standard Nvidia 61.77 also. Lots of people have been reporting problems with the 66 series drivers.
-
61.77 doesn't regonise my card. Trying various drivers, none seem to make a difference.:(

Well, its possible you have more than one problem causing similar symptoms. If the beta drivers worked at first, then the problem started again, maybe it is a different problem? Send Skuzzy your DxDiagnostic or post here, before you go returning the card. If it turns out its all the card after all, you are no worse off than you are now.

Thrila, I was looking through the Tom's Hardware guide today, they used a 65.75 version of the drivers for the 6600 card. I havent really done a search for those drivers anywhere, but if you can find them perhaps they will solve your problem?

Bloody hell another twist. I just played AH for several hours and no lock-ups. I read a thread in the nvidia forums about disabling fast write in BIOS- which was one of the first things i did. However one person said it didn't do anyhting for him until he enabled it in BIOS but disabled it with the nvidia tuner. It seems to have worked so far........

If you are still having any issues and want to try a different driver, zer0point has released their modified version of the 66.97 Forceware driver.
Here's the download from the DH forums:
