Charges of sex abuse and other crimes have been lodged against U.N. peacekeeping missions around the world for decades. Officials have found it difficult to crack down because the United Nations doesn't want to offend the relatively small number of countries that are willing to provide peacekeepers.
Peacekeepers fall under the jurisdiction of military authorities in their own countries, which is another factor limiting U.N. control of abuses.

Yeah, we shoudn't ever critcize the UN. How dare anyone do this....especially for something so trivial.?
On the other hand, it's okay to critisize the US for months because a few soldiers put panty's on some Iraqi prisonor's heads and made them ,strip naked (torture)....even though the US was prosecuting those involved.
Wonder when we can expect the UN investigation and prosecutions for the oil for food scandle and events like this one?
The UN is a worthless organisation run by fools and crooks.

Not the first time; few years back a KFOR (=UN operation at Kosovo) soldier Frank Ronghi raped a 11y old girl.
Anyone wanna guess where was that guy from and what was he?
US Army Sgt :)
Oh btw that sergeant killed that girl after he raped her like a good soldiers do...

Kind of different. Your example is a one time crime, the UN is continually operating and exploiting their victims.
The US soldier was convicted. What's goint to happen to these UN criminals? Mayabe bring them and Kofi before the world court?
"We have had and continue to have a serious problem of sexual exploitation and abuse," William Lacy Swing, the United Nations' special representative to Congo, said at a news conference.

I am not now, nor have I ever been, a member of the UN.
Need to get some good old fashioned McCarthyism going, shame Walt Disneys dead, I'm sure he'd be well up for it.

Well..it's not different at all...and not wanting to start a slam fest here but... The US soldier in this example was serving under a UN Mandate, the same as the one listed in the original post. The UN has indicated that the offenders are to be turned over to thier own country to be dealt with, exactly like the US soldier mentioned above.
Your comment about the UN continually exploiting thier "victims" is about as accurate as saying the US continually exploits prisoners in that Abu place...

Story didnt tell from what country the soldiers came from. (just wonder why?)
I wouldīnt be suprised if they all where US soldiers, doing their usual thing.
(Oh and dont take it to personal: Just a simple warning to slung out things towards the wind, it might just end up where you are standing.)

The UN did not identify where the soldiers were from because they know it's not the fault of the country but the offenders.
Edit..not sure if the US even has troops supporting this mission.

"No its UN fault. Not the soldiers!! No matter what country they come from. UN is responsible for every scumbag they put into their ranks."
Nice retoric, wonder why this isīnt used by USA in Iraq? Not to blame the offenders, but the organisation?
(Thats why they should just leave US soldiers out of UN missions...then this will not continue to happen.)
Crabofix
Edit: infact no US military personal involved in Congo.

The US prosecutes soldiers who do this crap. My question is are the others treated the same? From the story I saw a week or so ago, they were simply sent home, with no prosecution.

Thats the point here Lizking..is the UN sends the offenders home to be prosecuted like they did with the US soldier. It is up to the contributing country to prosecute it's own soldiers (or police if that is the case). Whether it's military law or civilian law, the contributing country is responable for dealing with it's own people who commit these acts while taking part in these missions. What the contributing country does is beyond your or my control, but that the price thats paid in order to get commitment from the various countries. Imagine the response if the US soldier mention in previous posts was tried under the laws of the country he was in when he commited the offence, and the nature of the sentence he would recieve.

did you read the article? I twas an ongoing thing, not just one incident.
"We have had and continue to have a serious problem of sexual exploitation and abuse," William Lacy Swing, the United Nations' special representative to Congo, said at a news conference.
Let's just face it, the UN is not qualified to do anything oher than drafting useless resolutions that they have ZERO power to enforce. Nobody is afraid of the UN......other than perhapse the people the UN are supposed to be protecting.
I would like to know why nobody outside the Americans on this bb can ever seem to see anything wrong with the UN. With all of the super sleuthes we have here who are able to dig up everything that is wrong with America, I wonder why no one can find anything bad at all to say about the UN, ever?
It's completely corrupt and run by fools and crooks. Most of the BS comes from the third world countries, who are forever ungrateful for the voice and money they have been given, ......with mostly western money keeping it all going.
I'm not just trying to make waves, I truly am sickened by the UN's ineptness and something needs to be done about it. I do not want my country involved with the UN in any way. No more money to the UN and no more pampered diplomats running around my country.

Tell me truthfully, if noone came up with bashing post like "**** UN*, "UN is Trash" do you really think anyone would bash USA?
Exactly, cause there are reasons to bash you guys and the worst thing: You all know it.

nice edit.

The US will not beg the UN for anything. In fact, the UN exists because of the US.

--yes I read the article and yes I am aware that during UN sponsered missions there are people that continually abuse thier position and take avantage of the people they are supposed to be helping. It a fairly commen thing when you place someone or a group into a situation where they find themselves with more power (this could mean money, authority etc) then those around them. As a result some of these people, not all, resort to illegal, immoral or corrupt practicies. --
-Here is part of the problem, the UN is only as strong as it's member states and can only project as much power as it is given. I don't disagree with the fact that UN needs to be overhauled or perhaps it's usefulness is over. There are too many conflicting interests present and as a result they (the Sercurity counsel) is unable to reach or make decisions and take the appropriate actions. In the Mission area command structure requests for additional troops or services are made and denied due to conflicting preceptions of the situation on the ground.
--In response to all these comments about UN Troops.....would someone like to post a photo of UN Troops in thier funny uniforms, or are you refering to the blue beret they are wearing. The UN does not have an Army or Police Force, it relies on member states to provide these services.
--I guess the point I am trying to make is that it is truly unfortunate that some International Workers, may they be soldiers, police or other workers take avantage of less fortunate people to satisfiy thier own greed, or perversion. But...I can not imagine that the UN condones or endorses this bahavior. The UN repatriates the offenders to thier home country and encourages the home country to take the appropriate action.

As for the UN... I can't believe all euros are as naive as the ones who post here defending the UN... I believe the ones that post here look at the UN as the last great hope for them to control the U.S. and turn it into the kind of mess they wallow in. They don't get to vote here so they want to make a whole new socialst entity to control us and no matter how corrupt and wasteful it is.....
The end justifies the means...

I don't understand why UN is blamed for the acts of inviduals.
Just as well US soldiers have done similar acts in the past, and at least I haven't blamed the US Army or americans for it.
The invidual who commited it is the one to be blamed for, just as well like those doing it as civilians.
Really can't understand all this blaming of entire continents or organizations for rather stupid reasons.
Blame those for the real reasons.. like if Kofi Annans brother, son or whoever it was broke laws with the oil for food program and if Kofi was a part of it, they should be rid and convicted.
Just like Bush and rumsfeld or whoever should be tried and convicted if found guilty for their misdeeds concerning the Iraq war, guantanamo bay and torture accusations.

So we've figured out the UN rapes girls, and all the sudden this signals the entire corruption, mis-management, and incapability of every single UN operation. Yeah, that's legitimate, fair logic. I'm not in any way defending the actions of the UNPKers, but discrediting the entire organization is going a bit far.
Despite its problems, the UN is still effective on some levels. While admitting that no one does respect the UN, it still carries the capability to do good in the world. Not every PKO is plagued by the incapability of soldiers to keep their hands off little girls. Kosovo and East Timor are PKOs in the final stages of their work, and have had no rapes to speak of. The UNMAS also is effective in mine clearance worldwide.
The problem in Congo is not based entirely on a fundamentaly flawed UN, but also on the countries from where the soldiers come. The UN is so deprived of good troops that it accepts not well-trained troops that are willing to commit crimes. However, the UN has to take some responsibility in its failure to include a sex-trafficking course for incoming PKers. Again, though, it does not help that the majority of troops are from countries such as Bangledesh (the largest troop supplier to the UN), especially when developed nations such as Britain, the U.S., France, and Germany supply the UN with practically nothing. The United States, for example, supplies the UN with a total of five troops...wow.
We need to recognize that incidents in one PKO do not discredit the entire UN, and that the UN does have some pretty major faults. All of you are so caught up in pushing your one-sided agendas that you fail to see the the problem exists on more sides than just that of which you oppose, and that's sickening.

Ah, no pic of laz in the face of a UN soldier, bettar watch out for the opinion police.
Soldiers committing sexual assault is something new, and now we should judge a group from the actions of a few.
Maybe they should send UN troops to Iraqi, to protect american service women.
