Hey all!
Was at the grocery STORE last night and saw the March 2000 issue of World War II magazine. Pretty good issue, the list the 10 ten planes of WWII in it. Nice pics and reviews.
Just thought I would pass this tidbit a long.

But what were they? (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

The top 10 fighters of WWII are(according to WWII magazine):
"They were not necessarily the best, but a handful of fighter aircraft excelled at the right missions at the right time - and achieved immortality." Quote by Jon Guttman. writter of this article.
1. North American P-51 Mustang
2. Messerchmitt Me109
3. Supermarine Spitfire
4. Republic P-47 Thunderbolt
5. Mitsubishi A6M Zero
6. Lockheed P-38 Lightning
7. Focke Wulf FW-190
8. Grumman F6F Hellcat
9. Yakovlev Yak-9
10. Messerchmitt Me-262

I always wondered if lists like this were really 'favorite' airplanes.
The P47 was flown by 7 of the top 10 American ETO aces and had more of an impact in the war later in the ground attack role.
The P51 in the Pacific doesn't hold a candle to the P-38. In the Pacific there was one P51 ace in the top ten and two were P47 pilots. The rest P-38. In the Med the P51 pilots had the lion shore of the top ten aces.
I use the top ten aces as the bench mark for impact an aircraft had versus other enemy aircraft. But the P47's role as a fighter-bomber is too great to be brushed aside in considering important aircraft in WWII.

Saintaw! Where did you get that smiley? Good Gawd, thats funny. The green slobber. LOL!
Surprising to see my favorite ride, the 109 in the #2 spot. It is usually thought of as a mediocre late war plane by most historians whose books I have read.
Boy, if this thread appeared over on AGW there would be some pissed off RAF fellas! Just wait til fd-ski finds this thread. We're all in a heap of trouble now! (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

hblair - frankly in my opinion things like "list of 10 best fighters of all time" and bullshuit along those lines doesn't interest me a bit.
categories are so broad that anyone who has even smallest ammount of knowledge in the subject will not be impressed...
If they decided to divide it into: best intercerptors, best escorts, best buff killers, best ground attack.... so on... AND use the actual model numbers ( ie. 109K-4 not just 109 ) - then it's a different story.
What we have infront of us is a list of pretty planes for 16 year olds to drool over.
I'm suprised that anyone here would ever take that seriously....

I doubt anyone here really did take it seriously. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
Curious, no F4U? No P61? (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
I was curious what the magazine considered to be the "best".

It is just a hunch but I think fd ski did. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
fd, out of curiosity, what would your top 10 be?
Mino

Yeah, that list is hilarious (for it omissions). In the Pac, I'd say that the
most important planes were the F4F and the SBD...Coral Sea, Midway, and Guadacanal.

Thanks Gorf for being considerate enough to include the post and as for fd ski, "pardon me, do you have any grey poupon?"
My personal pick fighter, for all around fighting is the Spit 14 even though I gravitate towards German Aircraft. The FW 190D and the 109K in capable hands can hold their own too. Of course, Im only a cyber jockey and not a very good one at that. hehee

"What we have infront of us is a list of pretty planes for 16 year olds to drool over. "
Rofl Fd-Ski!!!!!!!
I like them all. Especially in person. Nothing like really LOUD machinery. GRUNT!

Okay. THIS memo is for all those NEGATIVE people that have posted. Go buy the magazine, or stop by and read it and you will understand WHY these planes were chosen.
THere choices are very logical, but then again, what would they know .. its not like WWII history IS there full time JOB and Passion and yours is????
I just Made this POST because I figured you all would find it interesting reading for the WWII aviation enthusist.
And as For FD SKI , I am not going to waste time with your statemt because..well your not worth my time or effort. Your statement goes to show your lack of open mindness and your historical WWII aviation intellegence...NOT THERE.
Your BBS etiquette ranks up there with your online flying skill. PISS POOR!.
Get a life FD SKI,
All other pilots I encourage you to go read the article, very good reading and educating. The article talks about a make of airplane overall and its value it played to the WWII aviation history.
Good luck and God speed

Just curious (and haven't read the whole thread so sorry if i missed it) Was this judgement based on AC performance figures (doubt it - no varients), impact on war (no hurricane !!) or just the ones people like?

I want that gun! (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) Overmodelled uber-ranchers. Good thing we don't have people shooting back at us if we accidently kill a sheep. Very funny. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Glad you guys enjoyed that. My friend mlnko- sent that one to me a few days ago.

jmccaul,
The article was not really based off of figures, speed, turnrate, or anything like that. Some, but VERY VERY minute of it was.
THe article mainly listed them by the historical value, the time they came into the war, how the plane was used, mass numbers.. etc.
If you all would like, you guys pick one of the plane listed and I will type up the article for that plane and POST it on this thread..
Let me know

Thats' why it should be called "10 most INFLUENCIAL fighters of WWII"
Cause top fighter on that list should be Me262 (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
Closely followed by Ta 152 P51H and P47M spit 14... so on...
Relax. It's ok (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

fd;
Are you going to WIMP OUT, after you nick pick and flame the guy for no reason?
Post up your top ten. I'm fueling up my flame thrower right now. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Please throw your reasons for each choice of plane in, so I have more targets to shoot at. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Who said i was flaming him ?
Read my first post again. It has nothing to say about anyone - only about the product of the magazine - which is silly...
It's not my fault that Gorf feels that world circles around him (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

LOL! OK sorry. <S>
I just re-read also. Pretty much seemed a flame to me at the time, as it does right now. Although you now plead incoherent innocence, your words testify diabolical insinuation. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
IMO, Gorf might have overeacted a tad. But Hey! I realize someome must always post down, no matter what the subject matter is. This is a requirement for being a "Flight Sim Enthusiast"? I forgot that rule momentarily, so sorry!
BTW; does this mean you are still WIMPING OUT? Is flaming a WIMP legal, under "The Rules"? (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Minatour,
Got a couple Napalm to give ya while your at it. hehehe
As for FD,
A: I am not a upset 16 year old. I am a rational person. As for my AGE..will I was born 1 yr 5 months before the BOMBING of PEARL HARBOR. Let you figure out my age from there. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
B: If you follow the thinking of the article and change it to your line of thinking of narrowing down to the excat MOdEl.. the TA 152..would not MAKE the list not in the war long enough to make any historical differance.. and either would the P51H(correct me if I am wrong but I don't think it actually saw ANY action in WWII, BUT I could be wrong. don't have my books with me.)
C:And as for your one statment "It's not my fault that Gorf feels that world circles around him ".. WHAT do mean the WORLD.. HELL the hole UNIVERSE circles around me..moahahhahahaha (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
D: Actually I am 29.. just wanted to get your reaction..hehehe

I think Fd ski was making the point that if you were talking about the best planes performance wise in the war you would have to put he Me 262 first then followe it with all the late war uberplanes which saw little service.
Why's the hurricane not in the list !!!! I demand it's inclusion as without it's versitility and ease of manufacture it would not have been able to shoulder the main load of the BoB which then could have been quite concievably lost and with the germans having air supiriority it is quite possible that the P51 (top of that list would not have been able to do what it did.) (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
