yea there's a good thread somewere on here about it.

apperantly there's a mountain with a building on it right at the approach end of the runway and pilots have to crab around it all the time when that runway is active.  I'll look for some photos.

yeah doa  search for "Kai Tak Heart Attack", if that doesn't do it "Kai Tak Runway 13" will. Then again, just look for "unusual aviation pictures" -- they have a whole photo and video section dedicated to Kai Tak.  The ILS approach was onto a checkboard in the side of a mountain at a 45 degree angle to the runway. On the rooftops below were the approach lights which described a neat turn to the threshhold. Aircraft would line up, and at the last minute make a hard 45 degree turn, at the end of which the wheels would touch the ground.  It gets really messy if they screw up the turn, or if there's a crosswind. 747s are particularly glorious because they're big as whales and are designed to land at a crab angle (and not "one side first" as with many twins) -- if there's a crosswind, you point the aircraft into it and just drive it onto the runway.
