I saw in Skuzzy's tech tips that he recommends shutting down antivirus. My server ping times hover around 40-60 ms with the a/v being on. I am just wondering if I should turn off my a/v for better gunnery performance. I don't really like the idea of shutting down a/v protection, but, hey, if it is a big impact then maybe I should experiment.
Thanks, bockk

My AV and firewall is never shut down period.
Mebbe you could get away with no AV while gaming but i think the firewall is a must at all times.

I kill both when I'm gaming, and just rely on my router as a firewall. Running my McAfee firewall I notice that every so often my pings will jump really high for no reason I can find. Any other time I'm online, I button it up tight.

Largly depends on the antivirus software.
A lot of antivirus programs check each file loaded for a virus before it is handed to the application, others scan downloaded/new files or just random files.
When it decides to check files while ah wants to load them that will make the game verry choppy.
Also it might check the skins that are downloaded when a new skin pack is released.
So when you have trouble with ah2 crashing or choppy graphics or short freezes in game it can be related to the antivirus software.
Firewall can cause problems but a lot of people are playing with firewall, which is saver for sure.
To switch firewall and antivirus off gives best game performance but your system is unprotected so you run in some danger of catching virus/worm whatever.
Try with em on and see if it works, try AV off or with diffrent config if you run in trouble.

Anti-virus programs are a problem whenever updates to the game occur and are the source for file corruption. They will hurt frame rates whenever skins are being downloaded as well. Other side-effects are game stutters, freezing, and random crashing to the desktop, as well as losing UDP and being forced to TCP in the game.
Then the errant false-trigger is also a problem. This occurs when the AV program thinks a file is possibly a virus due to the data pattern in the file matching some virus program.
As long as your browser and email software (or any other program that allows files to be downloaded to your computer) and you have kept up on the latest security updates from Microsoft, then you are safe to shutdown the AV software whilke playing a game online.
