I friend of mine owns a trendy bar/coffeshop/somekindofplace.
He has given me the task of finding some music for him to play in the background. Maybe kida jazzy? dunno.
Not annoying music, but something he can use in the daytime and early evning while people sit down and talk while sipping their coffe or just reading the paper or interior decorating magazines :D
It a really cool place with a quite atmosphere in the daytime and its a nightclub in the weekends.
The furiture in the place is kinda 70's with modern features.
I'm gonna help him out a few nights a week behind the bar serving coffe and booze. the customers are kinda trendy people from 18 to early 30's
If anyone has heard the album "Lisa Ekdal sings Salvadore Poe" you know the general idea.
-
Dig up Pocos "Legend" album. Good stuff I think. Lots of other good stuff out there.
dago
-
thx dago...ill check it out :)
maybe someone can point me to a good music forum...maybe something for DJ's?
It's been a long time since i was a DJ myself, and i have lost touch with whats "in", classic and whats "out"
-EDIT- oh and please spare me the standard "google is your friend" I know, and i would not ask if i found what i was looking for with old googlie
-
the magnetic fields.
they do a GREAT rendition of "if i were a rich man" (from fiddler on the roof)
i heard it in a swanky cafe in new orleans once and had to scour kazzaa to find out who it was.
you can download it free at amazon.com (have to search, link wont work) or find it on a file swapper
or send me an email and i will happily forward it to you. they make alot of good "coffee shop music"
its the first thing that came to my head.
its not "musical"-ish at all, but it is haunting.
-
Thx for the tips again dago, but this is not a country bar out in the sticks :D :D
If the sample tune by this guy poco is representative of his work i would have to hire 10 jiihad bodybuilders to get the farmers out of the place :D

noted... im dl a few samples now to see if you are on the right track
thx
-edit- ok... perhaps i never should have mentioned the 70's furniture :D
sorry, but the 3 tracks i just dl by magnetic fields was just awfull. If i say music with more sax and female voice at a piano bar you should be able to get closer to what im thingking about
-
link to sample of magnetic fields (https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/clipserve/B0000573LP001001/0/104-1917913-9062309)
-
that was one of the tunes i dl JB88.
Think more sax, female voice, piano and less rusty old man with prostate problems and 4 packs of smokes a day.
:D
-
Does any of the big online record shops offer some kind of "similar music" tips like they do when you pick a movie?
-
lol... hmmm
you want portishead.
-
Nilsen, try anything from Matt Bianco or Basia. Very slow and jazzy, great for creating a mood.
His last work, Matt's Moods, is a perfect example (Listen to "La Luna" if you can)
Daniel
-
or you could just go straight to billy holiday and be done with it.
-
If you can find a sample of "Lisa Ekdahl sings Salvador Poe" you shluld know what im looking for cause the entire album is good (within what im looking for)

im rying to find samples now to see if you are on to something...

maybe ill have to upload some teasers to see if i can get you all tuned to my thoughts
edit... if you have some sort of file sharing software try downloading anything from Lisa Ekdahl "sings salvador poe" album and you will know what im looking for
-
try acid planet... it's royalty free music.

-
good tip......thx
the problem is that im not sure what this kind of musc i called so its hard to search for it. I used to know... it is a genre.
something something jazz i think
-
this is waht the reviewers on amazon said...maybe you know now what im talking about
"Yummi. A Lisa Ekdahl album is a happening. In the first place, this is NOT a jazz album, no sir. It's an italian bossanova album (written and composed by Mr Poe), and what a perfection this is. This is the only album where Lisa's voice goes "with" the music, i.e., singer flows voice, soul and mood (and you can imagine body!) with music. If you have listened to "Back To Earth" or "When Did You Leave Heaven" you know what I mean: Lisa sings Jazz with that angellical-almost-childish voice "against" the bass and drum and only saved by the piano, but don't get me wrong: the whole ensemble is of a perfection difficult to attain, and no aggressivity whatsoever can be found (quite on the contrary). These albums reflect a perfect tempo, voice and band are apart but are felt together and surely with a complicity rare to be found. I've read comparisons to Diana Krall and Norah Jones. For God's Sake, stop mixing compote with honey, though both are sweet... Diana Krall sings with the music, no contrast from that perspective and Norah Jones drowns in the music, tames the piano. Back to "Sings Salvadore Poe", this is a very coherent and homogeneous album that soothes your soul. As a starter, listen to "Daybreak" (nothing to do with Beth Orton's Daybreaker - excelent), following listen to the jazzy "How Many More Times" and go immediately to "The Color of You". Astounding. You're prepared for the rest of the album (or just play it from the beginning). Oh, and your life will change. How? You'll run to get everything from Lisa. And will start discovering the Scandinavian-jazz-gate. And what a wonderful discovery that will be!!! "
Diana Krall gets mentioned alot....hmm
-
I think Diana Krall is the way to go... If you know her you should know were im going
and elaine elias
-
i found some of the music by the artist that you were thinking of...not the poe songs though, or at least i dont think so...the titles were in norwegain. (i think)
etta james comes to mind.
billy holiday
ella fitzgerald
sarah vaughn
as well.
jazz standards. really more rhythm and blues in some cases.
they are the greats.
for men,
louis armstrong, duke ellington, nat king cole...etc.
88
-
you are getting closer JB88... thnx :) :)
-
i imagine if you look up any of these folks biographies you will run into others.
it really depends on if you want classic or modern and whether you want to step out of the box a bit.
try portishead - it could be sweet. see if you like it. not the same, but just another idea.
-
you might also google "artists influences"
let the string take you where it will bro. all sorts of stuff out there. which is great cause im downloading all sorts of new songs as we speak. gohd i forget how vital it is.
88
-
i can step out of the box abit and i would like _abit_ more modern. Maybe some variants of older artists performed by some newer artits. The sound system in this place is awesome and old records or remastered records are no good. I need new recordings but the originals can be older.
-
Found a real good tuene by Diana Krall and Norah Jones :)
add some more sax and _maybe_ less dominante voice and we are there + a touch of sugababes
-

Hmmm, if you want mellow background music, try having a listen to 'Massive Attack'. In particular their first album, Blue Lines, has some amazing tracks. Soulful, jazzy, with some trip-hop.
Or what about the Travelling Wilburys? Classic band with more talent than probably any other band in the whole world.
Katie Melua is a fairly new artist, but I quite like her style and she has an amazing voice.
Hope you find something suitable :)
-
Now htat i kinda know what to look for i have a new quest for you all
I need cd tips with lots of calm and quiet relaxing sax tunes.
it can be all sax or a few more instruments but not too many :)

If you tune into any "easy listening" web station you get pretty much what im looking for....
why didnt I think of that before? I blame Chivas Regal and Famous Grouse at this point.

Good stuff :) One of my favourite bands.

Try 'Closest thing to crazy'. It's a really nice song.
Another tune you should listen to is 'At the river' by Groove Armada. Really listen to i should say - it's a great song and if you like Massive Attack you will love this. The rest of their stuff is probably a bit too upbeat though, they are a dance act.

Nora Jones
Fiona Apple
Dave Brubeck quartet (SP)
Kenny G (boreing IMHO)

If I remember to on Monday, I'll finagle a playlist from Starbucks. Prolly what you're looking for... Norah Jones, Rufus Wainwright, Aimee Mann etc.

I emailed you with that song, hope it reaches you okay (6mb+).
Any problems, email me and I will send via ICQ or something. :)

(Why she threw away that beautiful hat ? )
If your friend needs just the music of the kind you described and wouldn't mind hearing out-of-this-world instrumental compositions with the virtuoso lead guitar of exceptional lyricism, don't go further but get a copy of "New York Attitude" by Dmitri Charaev. You can listen to a sample from this album at
http://www.prolpro.com/music.htm
This album was released by an obscure Japanese recording company, so it may be difficult to find a copy of this album even in Japan. Try to e-mail the guys at "prolpro".
In case of failure inform me. There may be a chance that I'll be able to help you. Good luck with your search ! :)

I was out the other night with my brother, some bar, talking about whatever. He's a total music freak like me. Alluhvasudden we both went into a trance. It turns out there was an ABBA song playing in the background. Almost at the same time we both said "shrecking brilliant". Can't remember which of the songs it was. But holy... ABBA were brilliant... They could put together a song like nobody's business.

Nash, Abba was like the Swedish Beatles.
Also in that catagory are the Bee Gees

hmmmmmm.
oh, and for the last time NUKE. im not gay and im not coming to your place to watch "boy films". frankly i find it rather disturbing. so stop it.

Nash, I was working on one of my company's devices at magic mountain the other day....they piped a few ABBA songs through and I thought the same thing. They were brilliant. They knew how to craft a catchy song.
I remember a lot of their songs , as I was a kid when they hit big.

ABBA IS something special. Till this day I'm proud that I was among the TV viewers who watched them winning the Eurovision song contest. Was it in 1974 ? I can't believe it wasn't yesterday.
Of course, it wasn't "Yesterday". It was "Waterloo".
Though this particular song may be not of the kind Nilsen's friend is looking for, nevertheless they have so many other songs which fit Nilsen's description.

Yesterday came out in the 60's....
ABBA was good, but but if you view what they did as good...then the Breatles were GREAT!
And that stupid Eurovision song contest is a joke....An Israeli transexual win it a few years ago.....transexual, non European??? Wins European song contest?
-
i feel sorry for ABBA, they've been taxed so much that the group eventually decided that it's not worth making money:D

Might just wanna create a collection of tunes from different artists for him
one in particular that I can think of off the top of my head that might be ideally suited is
Dire Straits :: Your Latest Trick
Off the "Brothers in Arms" album
While were at it off the same album you can also include "Why worry"

Brothers in arms... Holy CHRIST what a great song.

In the old times it didn't look so obviously gay.
