Title: I need help from an Italian...
Post by: Mark Luper on January 09, 2005, 11:09:20 AM
Here's the deal:

I have had one of Luciano Pavarotti's songs running through my head  for the last 3 weeks. Caruso. I love the song, at least the music. It is haunting... I finaly found the lyrics to the song and thought that my knowledge of Portugese and Spanish would enable me to understand what was being said. I was wrong. Italian is a lot different. All the translators I have found online of course make gibberish out of it. Some of it can be followed but most of it leaves me "wanting".

Could one of you guys give me a gramaticaly (English of course :) ) correct translation of it?

Here is the text:

Qui dove il mare Luccica
E tira forte il vento
Su una vecchia terraza
Davanti al Golfo di Surriento
Un uomo abbraccia
Una ragazza
Dopo che aveva pianto
Poi si shiarisce la voce
E ricomincia il canto

Te voglia bene assaise
Ma tanto bene sai
E una catena armai
Che scioglie il sangue dint´e
Vene sai

Vide le luci en mezzo al mare
Pensó alle notti la in America
Ma erano solo le lampare
E la bianca scia di una elica
Senti il dolore nella musica
Si alzó dal pianoforte
Ma quando vida la luna
Uscire da una nuvola
Gli sembró piú dolce anche
La morte
Guardó negli occhi la ragazza
Quegli occhi verdi come il mare
Poi all´improvviso usci
Una lagrima
E lui credette di affogare

Te vaglio bene assaie
Ma tanto bene sai
A una catena armai
Che scioglie il sangue
Dint´e vene sai

Potenza della lirica dove
Agni drama é un falso
Cha con un po´de trucco
E con la mímica
Puoi diventare un altro
Ma due acchi che ti guardano
Casi vicini e vari
Ti gan scordare le parole
Confondo i pensieri
Cosi diventa tutto piccolo
Anche le notti la in America
Ti volti e vadi la tua vita
Como la scia di unélica
Ma si é la vita che finisce
Ma lui non ci pensó poi tantó
Anzi si sentiva gía felice
E ricominció il suo canto

Te voglio bene assaie
Ma tanto tanto bene sai
É una catena armai
Che scioglie el sangue
Dint ´e vene sai

Thanks in advance, I shall be forever indebted to you :)

sure.  let me try the first part.

Qui dove il mare Luccica - i have ghey wood for your love

E tira forte il vento - if only your tira (mother) would approve.

Su una vecchia terraza - but your father wont have it.

Davanti al Golfo di Surriento - so i must find a golf pro

Un uomo abbraccia - and dance with him

Una ragazza - one time

Dopo che aveva pianto - by the stupid piano

Poi si shiarisce la voce - when all i can hear is your voice

E ricomincia il canto  - it sounds like butterknife.

Actually it isn't from an Opera, it is from his album "Romantica". A series of romantic songs. I do like some Opera, but a lot of it is just over my head :D

Qui dove il mare Luccica
Here where the sea shines
E tira forte il vento
And pulls hard on the wind
Su una vecchia terraza
On an old terrace
Davanti al Golfo di Surriento
In front of the Gulf of Surriento
Un uomo abbraccia
A man hugs
Una ragazza
A girl
Dopo che aveva pianto
After having cried
Poi si shiarisce la voce
Then he soemthing with his voice
E ricomincia il canto
And restarts the song

Te voglia bene assaise
I want you so much?!?!?
Ma tanto bene sai
But you know very well
E una catena armai
Is a something now
Che scioglie il sangue dint´e
Which something with the blood
Vene sai
In your veins

Vide le luci en mezzo al mare
See the lights in the middle of the sea
Pensó alle notti la in America
Think of the night sin America
Ma erano solo le lampare
But they were only lamps
E la bianca scia di una elica
And the white blade of a helix?!?!
Senti il dolore nella musica
Feel the pain in the music
Si alzó dal pianoforte
Rise the pianoforte
Ma quando vida la luna
But when you see the moon
Uscire da una nuvola
Exiting a cloud
Gli sembró piú dolce anche
It seems even sweeter
La morte
Death
Guardó negli occhi la ragazza
Look in the eyes of the girl
Quegli occhi verdi come il mare
Those green eyes like the sea -getting misty eyed here (spitV)
Poi all´improvviso usci
then all of a sundden exits
Una lagrima
a tear
E lui credette di affogare
and he thinks he suffocates?!?!

then the tune repeats

Potenza della lirica dove
power of the song where
Agni drama é un falso
even a tragedy is fake
Cha con un po´de trucco
with a bit of make-up
E con la mímica
and the acting
Puoi diventare un altro
you can become somebody else
Ma due acchi che ti guardano
but two eyes that are wathcing you
Casi vicini e vari
so close and ?!??!
Ti gan scordare le parole
make you forget your word?!?!
Confondo i pensieri
confuse the thoughts
Cosi diventa tutto piccolo
and thus everything becomes small
Anche le notti la in America
even the nights in America

Ti volti e vadi la tua vita
you something your life
Como la scia di unélica
like the balde of a helix
Ma si é la vita che finisce
but if it is the life tha ends
Ma lui non ci pensó poi tantó
he doesn't think about it much
Anzi si sentiva gía felice
something he feels happy
E ricominció il suo canto
and restarts his song

hope this helps a little bit

Thanks for the effort  spitfiremkv it is a lot closer than what I've been able to get. At least I am getting more of the gist of the song now.

Well, I spent all afternoon using a word for word translator and used my knowledge of romantic language sentence structure to come up with a translation. I did find out there were a lot of misspelled Italian words which made it more difficult. It still isn't right but much closer than I have been so far. Here is what I have:

Qui dove il mare Luccica
Down where the sea shimmers

E tira forte il vento
And the wind blows strong

Su una vecchia terraza
There is an old terrace

Davanti al Golfo di Surriento
By the gulf of Surriento

Un uomo abbraccia
A man embraces

Una ragazza
A girl

Dopo che aveva pianto
After she has been weeping

Poi si shiarisce la voce
Then he clears his voice

E ricomincia il canto
And resumes the song

Te voglia bene assaie
You wish very much

Ma tanto bene sai
And know so well

E una catena armai
It's a tune that by now

Che scioglie il sangue dint´e
Unchains a mood

Vene sai
You know so well.

Vide le luci en mezzo al mare
See the glow out in the sea?

Pensó alle notti la in America
I think it's night in America

Ma erano solo le mare
But there was only the sea

E la bianca scia di una elica
And the white wake of a propeller

Senti il dolore nella musica
He felt the sorrow in the music

Si alzó dal pianoforte
That rose from the piano.

Ma quando vida la luna
But when he saw the moon

Uscire da una nuvola
Move out from behind a cloud

Gli sembró piú dolce anche
It seemed very eloquent before

La morte
It's exit

Guardó negli occhi la ragazza
He was gazing in the girl's eyes

Quegli occhi verdi come il mareT
hose green eyes like the sea

Poi all´improvviso usci
And then all of a sudden

Una lagrima
A tear

E lui credette di affogare
And he felt he would drown

Te voglia bene assaie
You wish very much

Ma tanto bene sai
And know so well

E una catena armai

It's a tune that by now

Che scioglie il sangue dint´e
Unchains a mood

Vene sai
You know so well.

Potenza della lirica dove
The power of the lyrics where

Agni drama é un falso
Every sentiment is false

Cha con un po´de trucco
Which with a little truth

E con la mímica
And with gestures

Puoi diventare un altro
Could become another

Ma due acchi che ti guardano
But two eyes that you watch

Casi vicini e vari
Things near and true

Ti gan scordare le parole
You forget the words

Confondo i pensieri
They confuse the mind

Cosi diventa tutto piccolo
Everything becomes trifling

Anche le notti la in America
Also the nights there in America

Ti volti e vadi la tua vita
You turn and see your life

Como la scia di unélica
Like the wake of a propeller

Ma si é la vita che finisce
But it is her life that she sells out

Ma lui non ci pensó poi tantó
But he didn't believe then as much

Anzi si sentiva gía felice
And she felt happy

E ricominció il suo canto
And he started his song again.

FYI This is not a Pavarotti song, It has been performed by Lucio Dalla long before, am not sure who wrote it initially.

Corrections on third line -- gettting closer.

Qui dove il mare Luccica

Ma tanto bene sai
And know so well
I mean, I love you so much

E una catena armai
It's a tune that by now
And it is now a chain (reading Ormai for Armai, and the chain has me)

Che scioglie il sangue dint´e
Unchains a mood
That melts the blood within you

Vene sai
You know so well.
is coming, you know.

Vide le luci en mezzo al mare
See the glow out in the sea?
See the lights in the sea?

I think it's night in America
He thought of the nights there in America

Could become another
You can become a different person

Ma due acchi che ti guardano
But two eyes that you watch
But the two eyes that watch you

Casi vicini e vari
Things near and true
vari -- could be true in this case (since a lot of the es appear to be as in this transcription -- some sort of mezzogiorno dialect?). Maybe "varied" though/

Ti gan scordare le parole
You forget the words
(Ti fan) make you forget the words

Confondo i pensieri

Mess up your thoughts

But then he didn't think about it much

Anzi si sentiva gía felice
And she felt happy
Rather, he already felt happy

E ricominció il suo canto
And he started his song again..

Thanks Dinger, that is really appreciated :).

Saintaw, I heard it sung by Pavarotti. It is included in one of his albums. I don't really know who ever wrote it or sang it before him

I appreciate all who helped me with this, now I can put it to bed :).

Just one or two remarks, given that dinger  has a good Italian speaking, I know, BTW Ding happy to see you sometimes :)
Maybe we can meet again? No plan to come here?

 Che scioglie il sangue dint´e

Vene sai

(this is not correct italian, but a slang Napulaetan language)

Vide le luci en mezzo al mare

He saw the lights in the sea

Pensó alle notti la in America

He thought of the nights there in America

Ma erano solo le maree

But there were only the tides

 Si alzó dal pianoforte
He woke up   from the piano.

Te voglio bene assaie

I love you so much

Ma tanto,  tanto bene sai

I mean, I love you very much

Casi vicini e vari
Things near and true
vari -- could be true in this case (since a lot of the es appear to be as in this transcription -- some sort of mezzogiorno dialect?). Maybe "varied" though/

Così  = so    veri= true, sincere
