Title: How did Machnix do this?
Post by: oboe on January 10, 2005, 07:31:47 AM
I noticed on his fantastic P-51B skin, he isn't using the default US star/bar insignia, which comes from the file MARKING.bmp.   He probably blacked out the MARKING_a.bmp mask file, and then put his own insignia in the skin - this allows him to build the insignia under the panel line/rivet layers and add weathering details, etc, (all to great effect).

But, the Right/Left wing surfaces are mirrored for the upper and lower surfaces in this skin, so HOW did he get the insignia on the left/upper and right/lower surfaces only?    Seems to me it should show up on both mirrored surfaces, not just one.

This is really a nicely done skin - you guys should examine it closely offline.

Thanks help!

oboe  would it be possible to modify the isignia bit map  sto add rivits to it then that would cure the mirroring problem?
i guess everyone has a little trick they use when skinning.

I think you could modify the MARKING.bmp to add weathering, rivets, etc.

In fact now that I look more closely I think that is what he has done.   Amazing commitment to detail.

Thanks Rogerdee!

oboe,

Sorry I didn't see this thread sooner.

You are correct about modifying the MARKING.bmp to get some weathering and the ammo bay panel line to show on the insignia.  Actually, both MARKING and MARKING_a.bmp where modified to get the proper affect.  The tricky part is getting the panel line on the insignia to line up with the panel line on the skin and to get the line on the insignia to be more pronounced on the upper surface then anywhere else.  Whatever HT allowed in the skin, I made the most of -- skins, markings, pilot were all changed.

Thanks for noticing.
