U.S. indicts Schrenko
Former top school official accused of skimming $500,000, including $9,300 for face-lift
(http://img.coxnewsweb.com/B/07/25/37/image_1137257.jpg)
By JAMES SALZER
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Former Georgia School Superintendent Linda Schrenko, whose groundbreaking political career dissolved into erratic behavior and defeat, was indicted on federal charges that she stole more than $500,000 in taxpayer money and spent part of it on cosmetic surgery.

Schrenko, 54; her close friend and chief assistant Merle Temple, 56; and Alpharetta businessman A. Stephan Botes, 47, were named in an 18-count indictment that alleges they were involved in a scheme to steal federal education funds and secretly funnel about half the money to Schrenko's failed 2002 campaign for governor.

In addition, the indictment charges the Republican school superintendent used $9,300 of the money to pay for cosmetic surgery.

Schrenko acknowledged in November 2002 that she had had a face lift in recent weeks.

The federal funds purportedly were used to purchase computer services for two state schools for the deaf and the Governor's Honors Program, but officials say the services weren't delivered.

"The defendants attempted to cover up the scheme by filing false campaign disclosure forms, creating back-dated contracts, devising false cover stories and lying to state of Georgia auditors and to the public," said Sally Quillian Yates, acting U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia.

Cathy Henson, who was chairwoman of the state Board of Education in 2002 and questioned Schrenko's use of education funds, said she was "delighted" by the indictments.

"I think the taxpayers of Georgia won," said Henson. "The sweet part is that the process worked. Everybody should remember, as trite as it sounds, that nobody is above the law."

Henson said she became suspicious when she discovered Schrenko had directed her staff to issue a series of checks on the same day, July 24, in amounts just under $50,000.

Keeping the checks under $50,000 allowed the money to be doled out without Board of Education approval.

On Wednesday, Rusty Paul, former chairman of the Georgia Republican Party, said "She had a lot of support from the Christian conservatives in the Republican Party, both in her gubernatorial run and in her tenure as school superintendent."

Georgia's former deputy schools superintendent pleaded guilty Monday to charges he conspired to help divert federal education money to finance his boss' failed bid for governor.

I guess this, and that idiotic attempt to challnge the ohio vote certification really shoot down Nash's theory that you leftists would just let the eletion bellybutton whooping go by without crying and raising a fuss.

But hey, I guess it's OK to steal from deaf kids as long as you use the money for a face lift to help your campaign.

rpm, they are still laughing about kerry.

though i am not a democrat, i think
that he has been quite respectable in his loss (by a low % margin) .

lets not forget all, that bush never would have even been there had the election not been turned over to lawyers.  gore won the popular vote.

as far as i can see, there is nothing that i can see to be proud of in that, or in this victory.  especially when one goes about rubbing peoples faces in it.   that just demonstrates thier level of maturity, and offers grist for the mill of regret.

and nuke.  i think a picture is enough.  if you cant make the connection, thats your problemo bro.  you know what i mean.

Lawsuit Seeks New Election Over `Misleading' Ballot
By Karin Meadows / The Associated Press
Nov 9, 2000 WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The lawsuit came after hundreds of Gore supporters flooded the Palm Beach County elections office with calls Wednesday, saying they feared they had mistakenly voted for Buchanan. Lawyers for the Democratic Party said that the design of the Palm Beach County ballot is illegal and that they may ask for a re-vote.

So if the lawyers were left out, GWBush would have won Florida, and become the 4th President to be elected by the Electoral College without winning at least a plurality of the popular vote.

I think that the US Constitution is not the Bible.
It can be amended with the regard to the  procedure of presidential elections. The whole world is laughing at the USA that boasts to be the stronghold of democracy but still uses undemocratic voting procedure (the electoral college).
In my opinion, in the USA the so-called "democracy" has outlived itself. The political mechanism of this country needs some adjustment, may be some fine tuning, but not in the direction of widening of the use of the democracy principles. "Democracy" seems to be a nice word, but it can't and should't be applied for everything. I would rather see the USA not being clinched onto democracy principles per se but paying more attention to what is really applicable and good for the country and its people. Maybe right now you guys just need a limited term of military dictatorship. The ancient Romans were more flexible in these matters and more outspoken about it than the modern Americans.

holden,

ya, i know.

and i think that it was right that they challenged it.

the lawyers for the democrats wanted votes counted.  the republicans didnt.

the supreme court ultimately decided it, but under shakey circumstances and less than honorable means.

there was this amazing vanity fair article about the whole process from beginning to end...best ive seen yet.  it blew my mind.

pretty dirty stuff.

fact is, when all was said and done, several independent organizations have done counts and have determined that gore actually won florida by a very narrow margin.  the republicans were trying to keep the votes from being recounted and spared no expense laying logs on the road to prohibit this from happening.

nothing to be proud of on either side, but i would say that the republican leadership is going to have a pretty rough go going into the next term.  lots and lots o questions...its not going to be as easy as so many of the die hards think.

theres alot owed by the republicans at this point.  alot of checks they wont be able to cash.

:lol

BTW major news organizations did a full recount of every vote in florida after the election, this process took several months and guess what Bush still won. The SC just ended the endless recounts the dems were demanding  one after the other after every counting scheme of their failed to give enough votes to win...

it is not a military dictatorship in that, though the commander in chief is in charge of the military, he is for all intents and purposed an elected civilian with the power to direct the military.

i might be mistaken, but i believe that he holds no military rank and has less top secret clearance than some in the military.

it is also not the military which is policing the united states, though that has become a danger with some of the provisions of the patriot act.

Nope, recounts done by major news organizations show bush winning...

Here, the evil right wing rag known as the New York Times sums it up nicely..

http://www.nytimes.com/2001/11/12/politics/12VOTE.html?ex=1105592400&en=2cc4e9dd902fc018&ei=5070&oref=login

They only say that gore "might" have won if all sorts of bizzare rejected and unclear duble votes were counted in the whole state...

And the article is expressly clear that the recount stopped by the SC eventually showed Bush the winner.

So to sum up.

Bush won in every reasobale recount scenario that was fully completed and in every such scenario that was eventually completed. Gore "might" have won if an extremly loose and subjective method was used to count - but even then only "might."

Sorry to bust your bubble JB...

Hillarious..  Dont you have some militarly looking unmarked plane to track down?

actually, that isnt true.  if i recall correctly they had clerks from conservative judges represented as well.

again, ill have to find the article.

i am assuming that you have tracked it down on the web as i am doubting very much that you have a subscription to vanity fair.

ill have to try that.

or did you just google it for a review perhaps?

i am not personally upset that gore lost.

i am however disappointed in the republican party (i once was one) because i feel that it has become loathsome and prideful.  that it has strayed way beyond the things that made it good in the first place.
that it has lost track of the basics and replaced them with gooseschtepping monkey boys like yourself.

a pity really.  i think reagan would have pooped himself...then again, maybe not considering that he was complicite in the iran contra affair which was wholly illegal by the standards of the constitution that you keep railing on about.

and nixon...oh yes....thats right, a pattern of duplicity?  hmmmm.

you might appreciate this one though...

i have an autographed copy of Machiavelli's "the prince"  signed by none other then colonel oliver north.

you should have seen the look on his face when he closed the book.

priceless.

as far as the white jet and my opinions on flight 93.  i am not sure why you would think that i might feel insulted by your taunts about that.  i just happen to think that it was shot down.  and i sadly agree that it would have been neccessary.  there are good arguements for it.  i doubt that youve read them, not to mention the possibility that you might schtep out of the party line long enough to actually use your newfound freedom to question what you percieve as mighty authority.

its what americans do.

it just doesnt bother me.

Not to argue the whole thing over again, but your statement is an oversimplification.

The Demos wanted some votes counted.  They did not ask for a statewide recount, only some counties.  They sought to have some oversea absentees disallowed.

The truth is that both sides wanted the votes counted that were thought to be advantagous to their side.

ya, i know.

and i think that it was right that they challenged it.

the lawyers for the democrats wanted votes counted.  the republicans didnt.

the supreme court ultimately decided it, but under shakey circumstances and less than honorable means.

What a crock of chit. The democrats demanded recounts in ONLY the heavily democratic counties where they thought they could pick up some votes for themselves. They didn't give a damn about any other county or the mailed in ballots from the military, which they wanted to have thrown out.

The whole incident was a democratic pile of horse watermelon from day one. "Every vote must count" they were saying......while trying to get ballots tossed out.

And then they tried to IGNORE Florida's election laws regarding recounts. They tried to scratch and claw, lie, cheat, and say or do anything top steal a win.......laws didn't matter to them.

In the end, after every recount, Bush won every one.

What's important to remember is that for both Democrats and Republicans, the idiots represent the norm... not the 99% that stay out of the news.

Real tough guy there JB88...

You think because your father or bother in law is some narc of some sort that you can use a veiled threat to try and threaten a man's citizenship?

That goes beyond being low, and just exemplifies the type of man you are.... a POS.  A POS that should be banned for his little veiled threat.

LMAO... you are a small person, a really small person who needs to someday sit down and read the constitution before touting your ignorance of it.

Grunherz, if POS ever screws with you like that again, I suggest you contact your local FBI office and suggest that JB88 is threatening your citizenship rights with favors from his "all mighty brother in law".  I bet they can get the IP and go have a nice chat with him and his favor wielding brother in law.

JB88, whether you are joking or not, you need to refrain from goading people about getting personal information.  It really lends nothing to the bulletin board discussions and is just completely inappropriate, as well as none of your business (not sure why no one has picked up on that?).

And with that, we shall close the JB88 and Grunherz show for the moment.
