I saw this story today... it happened about a mile away from my father's house.
http://modbee.com/local/story/9750300p-10616529c.html
Be sure to take a look at the videos:
http://modbee.com/local/story/9750300p-10612430c.html
It's not exactly graphic, but the video might upset you (you've been warned).
The thing I noticed that differentiates the video from the typical "America's Most Wanted" video is how he shoots and immediately advanced towards the officers.
-
Sucks for the families... :(
-
Does the miltary have any systems in place to first find and then help men like him who might be suffering mentally or emotinally from war?
-
Thats horrible...
What a ass, why could he have not just shot himself?
Is there a way to donate to the officers family?
-
Grun,
Yes they do but there has to be some kind of indication that the soldier is having problems or a request for help.
There is insufficeint info on the news site to determine there was any idea this guy was having problems.
to the Officers who responded. and RIP to the fallen Officer.

Hey don't be so quick to judge there.
Have you been to Iraq and seen the horror's this kid has?
Well neither have I but we have seen pictures a videos which mean nothing compared to what he must have gone thru.
Some people snap under the pressures of war so until you have walked in his boots don't judge.
And it is a tragedy to all who lost there lives RIP.

i seem to recall a bunch of people laughing about some of that video on a recent post.

He murdered a man in cold blood, there is not justifaction for that no mater what he saw.
I have the tons of respect for the guys over there and who serve, (the real ones) but this guy murdered another person instead of just offing himself or seeking help. There is NO justification for that.

Think about what you just posted.
If he had the where abouts to make a conscious decision he would have not been mentally Ill.
It is obvious that he went wacko and was not thinking right so how was he to make the right choice?
I have seen insane people and have worked with them and I can tell you that they simply do not think like you and I.
The do not reason or think things thru at all they simply act out on impulse often never remembering what they did.
Now if he was simply pissed about having to go back to sand land and wanted to go out in a blaze of glory this is still not rational thinking is it?
-
Hey don't be so quick to judge there.
I've been to combat and will be going back.
All I have to say WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
I can't stand idiots who blame "the horrors" of combat for their problems. Yes combat is horrible. He volunteered just as I and everyone else did. Nobody twisted his arm and you have to be an idiot not to know what your getting into.
He is just another jerk who had problems BEFORE he went and now the world will hand him a crutch.
Loser. The real victim is the poor police officer and his family.

Sure it will. In most cases it will amplify existing problems. Combat does not make normal people want to see more violence or inflict it on others. Combat makes normal people wish there was a better way.

Very few actually, but I guara-Golly-gee-tee you that in twenty years the last of the "Viet Vet Need Help" cardboard sign holding streetcorner panhandlers will be replaced by a new generation of "Iraq Vet Need Help" panhandlers...
It is patently unfair to even bite off on Delayed Stress Syndrome BS as it stigmatizes those that served well, and with honor, and have gone on to be norbal, productive citizens. The two things I hate most in the world are posers and whiners, and most streetcorner "Vet" panhandlers are both.
<> to you Crump, and Thank You. Stay safe and when this whole nasty business is finished take pride in what you have done, because you are doing something honorable.

Most that I see are also about 10 years too young to have fought in Vietnam.

1st off at no place did i see that this guy implicated in the shooting and suicide was in IRAQ, it said he was an EX marine.............
to me he looked like a (being PC) Afro american in a not so afflouent hood!
but if he did serve there there is a small amount of understanding why and what he did! because he was raised in the HOOD with gangsta's and hood rats! maybee it just me i lived next to the hood and the old saying is correct and goes for a man of any color, race or creed!!
"You can take the boy out of the trash, .....but you can never take the trash out of the boy"
Just because he enlisted doesnt mean his problems are solve or hes been taught a better way!
Crumpp Big azzz you man cause you get nothing but respect from me!!!!!!!!!!
Wombattt/mr black/acehole#1 man you need a big old sock to stuff that hugh mouth of yours!

Charon, that bugs me more than anything- people taking advantage of a stigma attatched to kids who did their best to do the right thing and they're ten years too young to have participated.
That stigma, tho, was also perpertrated by the media for years- how many stories said "So and so, a Viet Nam Veteran , was arrested for..." , thus adding significance to the Viet Vet part?
Studies show Vets are pretty much in line with the rest of society when it comes down to the best, and worst, we can be, which makes sense since the military is a cross section of society.
To blame sociopathic behavior on wartime experiences is flat out wrong, and to charge the military with culpibility in discharging someone who is sociopathic is...stupid. He was sociopathic when he joined.
-
Wombatt,
Take a second and get an education to back up your opinions. Here is a good start. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0316330116/002-8286239-7536836?v=glance)
They went because the had to not nessesary because they wanted to and If given a choice would never want to do it again.
The US Military is an all volunteer force. See your local recruiter.
I mean what a mans man John Wayne would be proud of a stud like you.
It's not John Wayne or exhibiting false bravado. It's called being an adult and making adult decisions.
Look Rambo just because this guy does not measure up to what you think he should have done or not done does not make him any less human.
Nobody said he is less human. Just a human being using a crutch to cover his own inadequacy. Lots of guys need help dealing with their emotions after combat. This guy never was normal and it is wrong to allow him to use an excuse for his actions.
We are all responsible for our own individual actions and the consequences.

Wombatt, no matter what you say about his mental capacity or lack of does NOT excuse what he did in any form.

The poncho is logical considering the rainstorms we have been having recently and the fact that he was trying to conceak a rifle...
-
I managed to avoid vietnam... most of my friends didn't... those who were wound too tight before they left came back wound too tight... those who were ok before they went came back ok.

I hate to see anyone trying to justify the actions of the hemorhoid that caused the death of a Police Officer and the wounding of others. To say he was mentally ill is a nice crutch label. It is not an excuse nor is it justification. It's very convenient to claim that but the actions the scumbag took were not necessarliy indicative of someone off his nut. He fired a round in the parking lot then told the clerk a story guaranteed to get a Police response. Then he went outside to look for the Officers to arrive knowing they would be coming in response to the call and most likely looking to solve the situation nonviolently. He ambushed them plain and simple. This was a premeditated act and is not justified by any apologist excuse.
Crumpp, you are right on the mark, to you.
-
What? Another senseless gun killing in America? Naaah, sorry - I don't believe it.

There's all kinds of literature about these things happening after WW2, in the US. Our veteran's welfare system is full of people who could not cope with the stress of fear.
-
2 things here.
1. Go get a copy of of 'Stolen Valor'
( http://www.stolenvalor.com/ ) for a real eye opener on Vietnam Veterans and 'PTSD'.
2. Wombatt there is a big difference between the guys serving in combat arms today and the guys doing the same job in WW2, Korea, and Vietnam in terms of training/preparation/selection/etc. Take an 18 year old draftee and put him into combat against the Germans after 8 weeks of training and you are going to get some people who understandably become overwhelmed. The length and instensity of training for warfighters today is much greater. Don't expect a modern Marine to have the same reaction to combat against Iraqi insurgents that a WW2 Marine had after hitting the beach at Iwo against the Japanese.
Crumpp - keep up the good work and don't block any bullets with your face. :)

Wombat wouldn't know what end of a gun the bullet comes out of. I bet he has never even been within 5' of a real gun (sorry those plastic cap pistols don't count). So just ignore comments from him, he is obviously totally unqualifed to express an opinion on anything to do with the military.

Anyway, we should disband our military, it's much to dangerous, someone could get hurt. There are other ways to get into college than getting shot at.

He said this "So all your chest pounding tells me is that one you either never really served in combat or that you never served at all. "
To a guy who has served in Iraq and is going back voluntarily. I value the guy who has been there and is going back's opinion more than a guy like Wombatt who seems to know nothing about weapons, combat, guns or anything else.
I guess Wombatt might know something about mental health problems though.

one of the things that puzzles me so often about these boards is how quick some are to devalue our fellow denizens right to an opinion and free speech to the point where, rather than just debating the matter, there is an instant pull on the "you are a know nothing wacko" trigger.
frankly. i think that is, in itself, delusional and wacko.
not to devalue your opinion on the other matter, as you are military, your expertise may be local, but the global arguement on the subject is not soley held by those in service.

And let me make clear one more thing.
I am in no way condoning the actions of this Young man.
What he did was wrong and vicious.
All I am trying to point out is that there may be the possibility that he MIGHT have a mental condition weather it was brought on by combat or was there before I was simply throwing it out there for discussion.
After all Is that not what this is a discussion board?

The Story of the Gadsby
by Rudyard Kipling
Preface
Poor Dear Mamma The World Without The Tents of Kedar With Any Amazement The Garden of Eden Fatima The Valley of the Shadow The Swelling of Jordan
Preface
To the Address of
Captain J. Mafflin,
Duke of Derry’s (Pink) Hussars.
Dear Mafflin,-You will remember that I wrote this story as an Awful Warning. None the less you have seen fit to disregard it and have followed Gadsby’s example—as I betted you would. I acknowledge that you paid the money at once, but you have prejudiced the mind of Mrs. Mafflin against myself, for though I am almost the only respectable friend of your bachelor days, she has been darwaza band to me throughout the season. Further, she caused you to invite me to dinner at the Club, where you called me “a wild bellybutton of the desert,” and went home at half-past ten, after discoursing for twenty minutes on the responsibilities of housekeeping. You now drive a mail-phaeton and sit under a Church of England clergyman. I am not angry, Jack. It is your kismet, as it was Gaddy’s, and his kismet who can avoid? Do not think that I am moved by a spirit of revenge as I write, thus publicly, that you and you alone are responsible for this book. In other and more expansive days, when you could look at a magnum without flushing and at a cheroot without turning white, you supplied me with most of the material. Take it back again-would that I could have preserved your fatherless speech in the telling-take it back, and by your slippered hearth read it to the late Miss Deercourt. She will not be any the more willing to receive my cards, but she will admire you immensely, and you, I feel sure, will love me. You may even invite me to another very bad dinner-at the Club, which, as you and your wife know, is a safe neutral ground for the entertainment of wild asses. Then, my very dear hypocrite, we shall be quits.
Yours always,
Rudyard Kipling.
P. S.-On second thoughts I should recommend you to keep the book away from Mrs. Mafflin.
-
That really stinks for the officer and his family :(
That's the second nutbag that's shot a cop since New Years Eve (first IIRC wasn't in the services, killed a cop in Newington, CT).
S! To officers everywhere!
