Title: Quitting smoking
Post by: TweetyBird on January 11, 2005, 11:28:44 PM
I'm a little over a week in my quit, and have found a pretty good online quit smoking program. Its a little crowded now because it was mentioned on that "Dr.Phil" show, but the information is extremely helpful even if the support boards are a little bogged down.

Have a look - its sponsored by the American Lung Association

You gotta be a brain dead idiot to even think about starting smoking these days. I hear tell it's bad for you.

Good luck in cleanin up.

The problem is I didn't start "these days" but "those days" when the warning still said "Cigarettes MAY be hazardous to your health" and any 13 year old could buy them.

Tweety, I was a confirmed smoker for 23 years, 2 1/2 packs a day of Camel Filters, and if I could quit (12 years smoke free, but a cigar once in a while is sweet) then anyone can.

Once you start being able to smell, taste, breathe normally again you'll be glad you quit. You'll still have urges, and occasionally another's cigarette will smell good to you, but you're either a smoker or you aren't. WTG on making the decision to quit, and STICK WITH IT, you'll be glad you did.

Do like this guy (http://www.crownvic.us/movies/stungun.WMV). Every time he gets the urge, he disciplines himself. He looks pretty smart.

LOL I thought you quit trolling Bimmerfest....what are you doing with the video of the BMW Rite of Initiation?

Tweety, if, and when, you decide to quit- in your heart of hearts- that is when you will finally quit. Patch, Zyban, hypnotism nor any other quit smoking method will not work unless you genuinely want it to-

But quitting smoking changed my life. I grew four inches, chicks started digging me, my insurance rates went down, my noodle doubled in size because of increased bloodflow- and my newfound confidence moved me from the mailroom to a Full Partnership in my lawfirm, and all I have is a junior high school diploma which I have in a frame on my office wall. It may not say much in the way of my education but it looks impressive because we used Elmer's glue and glitter on the block letters, and face it- people are more impressed by pazzaz and dazzle than they are by substance.

Ya, It did that for me, as well as giving me involuntary shakes in my hands.  Was good curbing the cigarette appetite, but had to quit using it (Zyban) for those reasons.

Quitting smoking is the sigle best thing you can do to improve your health. Hang in there Willdcrd, and to help with the cravings try deep breathing when you get the urge to smoke, if that rattling in your chest doesn't make you realize smoking will kill you, well... then nothing will.

I use the patch as well and a "inhalator" when the patches makes its itch to bad.

Makes me dream a whole lot, but I dont crave cigaretts, they really help.

what Airhead said,
i quit smoking 2 1/2 years ago, i just quit and said thats it,
never used anything special for help.
But i think doing sport helped me alot at the first 2-3 month's.
I started to train for thriathlon (swim, run, bycicle) that time.
I wish you good luck TweetyBird, its really a "mind" thingy,
think about the years before you started smoking, you where free
and didnt needed smoke, imagine you can feel that way again.

But hey at the new year party 2 weeks ago me & my friends where
"smoking" a BIG cigarr just for fun hehe :)

Hang in there, It can be done and its not as bad as or difficult when you get past the first few weeks and you know how to handle your craving.

gave up for 8 months last NYE after about 9 years of binge smoking.

started again in august when i got pissed at something or someone i forget.

really, REALLY sucks to be back on them.  If you have given up and fancy 'just a quick puff'.... DONT!

It might take a few months to actually beat the addiction, but it only take one smoke to get back on them. :(

Wtg, Nilsen.

BTW - what is snus?
Title: Quitting smoking
Post by: mechanic on January 12, 2005, 07:31:20 PM
the sinus is a tube in your nose that goes somewhere else, cant remember where. apparently there is two of them, one for each nostrel.

how very generous of god.

when it gets clogged with snot you get head pains, energy depletion and in heavy cases a temperature and flu symptoms.

smoking does not help with sinus congestion.

Thx :) You can do it too

Snus is a kind of tobacco i think that you put under your lip. A sweedish thing that has also become very popular in norway now because you can use it were you are not allowed to smoke. It gives the same effect as smoking but its is faaaaaaar less dangerous and it has not been proven yet that you can get cancer from it. I have tried it several times, and I like it. Havent done any of it since i quit smoking tho cause it has nicoitine in it and i dont wanna become addicted to that again.

Snus is nothing like chewing tobacco.

It's finely chopped chewing tobbacco. Very popular with cowboys and rednecks here. There is also another type that all the old timers used when I was a kid called "Sweet Garrett" which was more like a powder.

I just read a peice on general.se about snuff. The stuff you use in america is very different from what we use in scandinavia. It started out the same cause swedish imigrants brought it over, but it has developed into 2 different things completly. The site mentnioned te brands you posted pictures off but they are very different

tweety... you are a weak sissy liberal who can't even stop himself from sucking on things....(hope that helped)

like airhead I smoked allmost 3 packs of non filters (they still make them?) mostly camels, for decades..

funny thing was... besides a throat clearing little cough all the time... I never really noticed any ill effects.

lung capacity was 117% (whatever that means) at a navy physical..  ciggs were less than a buck a pack... I smoked in my car and everyone elses.... No one ever told me I couldn't smoke unless it would cause an explosion.   I felt fine and everyone was fine with me smoking.

I just got tired of being dependant and hooked.

I think that is the key.  You have to be tired of it and, of course.... you can't be a wussy liberal mommas boy.

let us know how the mommies boy does eh tweety?

I dont make that claim at all, I have lost a couple of friends to cancer, it aint pretty. Of course for every site like the one I found this quote on there is a site that disputes it. Hell, I seem to recall hearing that Chinese food could cause cancer because of the MSG. Who knows, have some Chow Mein and enjoy life!

Chewing tobacco and snuff can cause cancer in the cheek, gums, and lips. Like a pipe, cancer often occurs where the tobacco is held in the mouth. Cancer caused by "smokeless" tobacco often begins as leukoplakia (a condition characterized by a whitish patch that develops inside the mouth or throat) or erythroplakia (a condition characterized by a red, raised patch that develops inside the mouth). Other problems associated with chewing tobacco and snuff include periodontal disease, tooth discoloration, and bad breath, among others.

I guarantee you wouldn't be smoking in my car lazs.  Though... I've never asked someone not to smoke in a public place.

Just an tidbit that really has no relevance outside of irony:

We had one fatality at work last year.  It was a massive corinary that was health related.  It happened in the "smoke shack".

mini and hblair... I am talking 15 years ago.   it has been that long since I quit.   At that time no one ever said anything to smokers.

If we went to a house and there was no ashtray we would dump the mints outta the candy dish and use that...  We (smokers) had no conception that we were bothering anyone.   Why would we?   everyone smoked.

they still do if they are actors (potatos) and get money for smoking in a movie.

smoking is vile.   I don't let people do it in my car or house now.   the times have changed and people are much more aware of the dangers and... the non smokers have gotten the guts to tell people not to pollute their cars/houses.

tweety is such a wuss tho that he will be sucking on that studmuffin again before the year is out... probly won't even admit it for a few months after he starts up again.   sucking away at some sordid little rest stop or behind a building..

Zyban is the Shizznit, but Airhead is right. You got to want to stop. I enjoyed the heck out of smoking, but I was sick of constantly looking for the next opportunity to light up.

Those damn things can run your life as well as ruin it.

I'm quitting because there's no way to light one of those propane lighters and still look manly. I was ok with the flink rocks, but most of the girly construction companies are banning them.

:)

Its not bad, I've never had much of a problem with the first 6 months. It after that I start to wonder, "Why did I quit?"
