Title: The New Charger
Post by: Sandman on January 11, 2005, 11:47:18 PM
I always liked the old ones... I like the new 300c...

When this hits the lot, I'm going to have to have a look.

Still... it is Daimler Chrysler so it's likely that it's crap. I won't hold my breath.

Them people at Daimler Chrysler are coming out with some neat cars lately.

They shoulda saved the charger name for a two door in my opinion. Kinda like GM reviving the "malibu" nameplate for a boring 4-door a few years ago. I'm sure this chrysler will perform, but still, the charger is a two door muscle car to me.

I've heard about this. It's a reworked model of the Magnum and it's butt ugly.

I dunno, I kinda like the look of it.  Course it doesn't have ovals like a Gen III SHO, so it can't be that pretty.  How can a car be pretty without ovals!?

It has the wrong number of doors.

Might like a 2-door version.

It DOES look like the Ram truck.

Funny story, when Dodge was re-doin' the Ram, only like 1 in 4 people that they tested it on liked the look of it (I THINK 27%, but i 4get).  BUT because that was larger than their market share at the time (17% ish, again slept since then), they went w/ it.

And the rest is history.......

Dodge has taken that crossbar grill a bit too far. Would it kill them to make a different design for cars? Steve nailed it...smurfy.

The new one looks like something swollen and bloated hit a brick wall or something.

I'd love to see on of the companies just bring back one of the old great cars exactly as it was shaped before but with all the new modern good stuff in the underpinnings. New brakes, suspension, engines, trannys....

I think there'd be long lines of purchasers in my age group.

Yep... my thoughts exactly. Ford got close with the 2005 Mustang but didn't go retro enough.

The 2005 Mustang is going to sell WELL,  so maybe if it does the big three will wake up and make real retro cars.

a GTO that looks like an old 65 or 68 would be fantastic.

A charger that looked like the one in the pick would rock. It would need a factory option for 01 on the side and a confederate flag on the roof though!

Why they built that instead of THIS (http://www.potomacweb.com/autoshow/charger.html) I just dont understand.

The weight, powertrain, and most of the bodystyle are almost the same as the 300, and magnum. I would have bought the concept, but not the production.

It is a mistake to name this new car 'Charger'.  There is absolutely nothing remeniscent of the original.

We may not agree on who makes the best BBQ, but Toad is quite right. :)

"I'd love to see on of the companies just bring back one of the old great cars exactly as it was shaped before but with all the new modern good stuff in the underpinnings."

I'd love to see that happen too, but it won't.

Most women, and lots of men who don't know better, would whine that it's "too big".  My wife complains when she has to drive my Buick, which is a very reasonably-sized vehicle.   Too many people are used to driving go-karts these days.

The kids probably wouldn't like it either since it has more than 4 cylinders, isn't a hatchback, and doesn't have a 3-foot-wide fart cannon welded onto the rear end.  Although, at least in the Charger's case, a huge wing was available.

Ford will do well with the "retro" Mustangs.

Baby Boomers largest portion of car purchasers now....we bought the Road Runners, Dodge RTs' and Super Bees.....the GTO's and the Chevelle SS 396s.  We owned the FIRST Muscle Cars.

The Charger doesn't look like a Charger ta me.  Looks like a Chrysler with a Dodge Magnum front clip.

Back then car designs changed almost on a yearly basis.  Now...sometimes hard to tell what the hell it is when you see a buick, olds , or pontiac.  Even the imports look similar.

Wonder what happened to individual creativity?

And the 'New"  GTO...well....LOLOLOLOLOL...y a....right.

Back in the 60s's....when we pulled up to the redlight...SS396 to my left....my Roadrunner built to the right.....idling at 1200 rpms, slightly bouncing, the deep roar of the exhaust (which included headers)  when ya reved the engine the ground seemed to shake....now adays (shrugs) just isn't as exciting.  Seeing a Hemi Cuda come off the line and the rear end bouncing all over the road belching smoke coz to much power to hookup with the road.
Now that was fun instead of todays seemingly two stroke sounding rice burners with a Lawnboy sound and the supposedly new Hypo breed....I say....ya....right.

Almost like comparing a Honda to a Harley.

Because it's cheaper. The Charger is simply a modified Chrysler 300c. Hell... the Dodge Magnum is also a modified 300c.

I liked that Charger concept also, but I imagine the retooling costs made it prohibitive.

Neat?  The Pacifica is up there with the Aztec or Rendevous in terms of ugliness.  Not to mention, it's a Dodge.

The nose is better looking than the bellybutton end.  Looks like they took it right off a Dodge Stratus.
