Why did you kill those sharks?
-
hopefully you will eat them and use all body parts for something yeah?
good catch, wtg.
kinda sad to see great creatures humbled though.
the are Mako's right?
-
no Bull shark!
Local council says there is an epidemic of Bull Shark in our river systems - the bull shark can live in salt and fresh waters - and they are offering us $100 reward for each shark. I am going ot ahve a BBQ with friends and we are going to eat them.
Charlie
-
So, they basically paid you $300 for a barbeque?
Sweeeeeeet. :)
-
a $100 per shark???
wow a man can make a good living doing that.
how long the bounty on sharks last?
at that price, a lil advertising, and sharks will be gone.
plenty of people would become shark hunters for that.
-
it was only for last night, you had to get a permit from the council
Charlie
-
Then again, some people spend thousands to catch a fish.
-
Man, and I always thought catfish put up a good fight... It must have been a blast to reel those in!

ROFL Evidently you don`t catch catfish much.
I can hook you up with some Blues here that will test the endurance of you and your equipment.

Nice pic of the minnows, now where's the Sharks?
:p

Wow!
Beautiful fish; good eating I'm sure. $100 a piece, that rules!
Enjoy them.

I`m sure the family would find this hilarious.
-
How much do they weigh?
Tell us how they taste if you eat them, It seems like a shark that lives and feeds in your river's would taste very bad, probably tastes like filled baby diapers and beer cans.
Just kidding, but I am curious as to how you cook them and how they taste!
-
Nice catch and shark is very tasty.
-
They look really dead......
-
can you chum the waters and then use a .50 browning on em a la Hemmingway?

Dont rightly care if they would or not. I do
didnt know the family frequented these boards
Politically correct Im not.
Part of the problem with this society is we worry too damn much about somebody being offended over something.
If you were offended by it all I can say is
"oh well"
Life is tough all over.
Grow a thicker skin

You ever seen the pic's of Hemmingway shooting his tommy gun at the sharks in Bimini? One thing for sure, ol Hemmingway didn't like sharks, and neither do I.

Politicaly correct has nothing to do with it. It`s called being a human being.
The chances of her family visiting this board is slim. The chances of someone being on these boards that have lost a friend or family member in a similar manner is very high. That`s the point.
The problem with society is not what you stated. The problem is parents who do not take the time to teach and instill values, respect for others, self respect and most of all just plain ole common sense. You are prime example of the end product.

shark is damn good if cooked right. it holds together on a grill and doesn't flake apart when flipping.
I always trim off the skin before cooking. if you don't sometimes you get a nasty flavor that develops. it's very faint and kind of ammonia like, my guess is it's something similar to the adrenaline taste you get if you shoot a deer or an elk when they have been panicked and running.
if you spray the steaks with a little lemon juice (I use a spray bottle on fine mist) before you put them on the grill, a foam like grease will rise out when it's almost ready to flip. if you push that off the edge before turning them it will remove almost all of the 'fishy taste' from the meat. a couple people I know who don't care for fish but were willing to try it said they liked the shark cooked this way because it didn't have the taste that they avoid fish for.
it also holds together well for batter frying small pieces.
IIRC it's less than 4% fat, very high protein meat.

thats correct. It's also a very good idea to gut it and clean it out quickly after landing it. I find that by doing that you eliminate some of the slight fishy aftertaste some species have. My favorite is Mako but they are all quite edible.

Someone caught a 140 pounder on rod and reel just last week. Fish woulda been a world record, but he spent all day searching for certified scales that would handle it. Fish dehydrated and lost about 10 pounds plus he never found the scales.
Think he got it just off the interstate at the I-20 bridge over Logan Martin.

The only real man way to fish for Cats are to noodle for them. :D
-
Go noodle one of them sharks. :D
-
we use bonito for bait but sharks will hit almost any fish if they are hungry or nothing at all if they're not. we can sometimes catch young lemon sharks on the flats with spinners. those are a lot of fun to catch but we release them.
as a note sharks are apex predators and as such don't reproduce as much as other species. they take a long time to reach sexual maturity and have lenghty gestation periods. generally we release any females and only harvest the larger males. just something to consider.
looks like charlie and friends landed three adolescent females.

I have caught several 40 pound catfish in the Ohio River. Within a mile of where I fish, a man caught a 98 pound blue catfish a year ago.

BS
It has nothing to do with Values. Or respect, or common sense.
Politically correct has everything to do with it.
We're supposed to watch everything we say, do or joke about on the off chance someone might be "offended."
THAT is political correctness
Was it an off color joke? Yes
Was it a tasteless joke? Yes
But it was a joke nonetheless.
Someone with "Common sense" would see it is intended as a joke even if weren't found particularly funny by them and know Im not condoning what happened.
And just ignore it if they didn't find it amusing or even if they didn't like it..
Off color and tasteless jokes get told all the time.
Remember?
"What kind of wood doesn't float? Natalie"
Yes, Im sure her family loved that one.
there are probably hundreds of others people can come up with.
All that may "offend" someone cause something similar may have happened to someone they know.
But people with "common sense" realize such jokes are not aimed at them or about them
Now if you or someone here has had something similar happen.
That is truly a terrible terrible thing. And I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
BUT I was not referring to you or them now was I?
Do yourself a favor and grow a thicker skin and blow it off for what it was.
You'll find yourself a stronger person for it

ROFL Evidently you don`t catch catfish much.
I've caught plenty of catfish, thanks. They are mostly like pulling up logs. Not hard to catch either. Frozen meat soaked in vanilla, put on those circular hooks that set themselves..... piece of cake, and no skill required to catch them... unless you're a noodler.
I'm nost saying catfish don't fight at all, just not very much, pound for pound, say as smallies..... or bigmouths... or musky.

catfish is great tablefare but I have never experienced a fighting catfish. I live on a lake that has access to the eastern everglades. we have several catfish species here and all of them are quite edible. we also catch centropomus undecimalis (snook) (a neighborhood kid caught a 42lber last year but we couldn't find a certified scale in time) micropterus floridanus (large mouth bass) cichla ocellaris (peacock bass) all of which put up nice fights, especially for fresh water fish. we are also seeing monopterus albus (asian swamp eels) people here are having fits over this species. I'm not sure what their impact will be but I intend to find out if they are edible, we haven't been able to get them to bite at anything yet. they kind of stand on the bottom and point their heads to the surface. does anyone know anything about this species?

Yea, lord knows the unpoliticaly correct crowd are never offended by what people say (Like when a Dixie Chick says she's embarrassed because her President is a moron).
You know it cuts both ways.

I really don`t know what kind of catfish you guys must be catching that don`t fight unless maybe bullhead.
The Blues will certainly give you a run for your money.
I live on Lake Tawakoni. As far as fighters , we have large mouth bass, Stripers and Hybrids (Striper Hybrids) and the Highfin Blues.
I used to live on Lake Fork. We had the Florida strain bass. Lot of fun.
-
Ctch a big Gaftop, they fight at least as well as a same size redfish, if not better.
-
This is interesting.
I know the North Atlantic Shark, - it is poisoned if you cook it right away. So, it has to rot for a while to be edible (those poisoned materials dissolve easily)
Anyway, afterthe process, it is a healthy (however horrible) meal.
And this:
"It's also a very good idea to gut it and clean it out quickly after landing it. I find that by doing that you eliminate some of the slight fishy aftertaste some species have.
"
I know this from trout fishing in muddy lakes, - better gut them right away, or they won't taste.
Just 4 hours of waiting will make a big difference.

Smallmouth do put up a fun fight, they jump all over the place and really put on a show.
I hope all of you from the South realize just how fortunate you are when it comes to fishing. My family has a house up on Lake Champlain near Ticonderoga, NY. In that region, a 6lb Largemouth is considered a good sized fish (they'll get bigger in other parts of the lake). Down in Florida it wouldn't even turn a head...
All good fun at any rate. Every now and then when the fish go on the beds you can find a spot where a big old pike, bass or pickerel is slamming your lure on almost every cast.
My uncle Steve always used to say "there's only two things worth doing in life: ****ing, and fishing... And whenever I get married I get a double dose of fishing"
That doesn't seem so bad :)

Don't think we have had the loc. talk before. We live in Marion county but the in-laws live in Florence. Fish Wilson and PIckwick a great deal. Give a holler some time and we can hook up and grab a cold beer.

A healthy catfish is an excellent fighter. The average fight for me lasts 10 minutes. This is if I use line that is lighter than the weight of the fish. I caught several 10-12 pound catfish out of a local lake on 6 pound line. Fish were constantly swimming and pulling.
-
I tell ya, I caught this trouser trout one time, it was like wraslin a bear.

Caught a 35 pounder here at a local lake using a light-medium rod with 12 pound line. Was a damn good fight, took close to 20 minutes to reel him in. Almost lost him when he ran to the rocks and tullies on the shore line.

I heard a rumour of a diver looking for a body/ies in the Ohio near Parkersburg WV.
Came out of the water, and claimed there were Cats bigger than he was, and would never go into the water again.

Sun I think that is a urban legend. Have heard the same story about divers in and around several lakes and rivers down here.
Might be time to call Myth Busters.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told once that sharks urinate out of their pours, hence the ammonia flavor. Same person said that soaking the meat in milk would drain out the "urine".
A few years ago in Mexico I caught a 250 lb. Hammerhead. It took about 45 minutes to land. I've caught striped Marlin, Dorado(great fight and taste)and tuna. Tuna are by far(IMO)the most fun to catch and tastiest(raw, of course). On another trip to Mexico, I caught a 20 lb. Dorado, two yellowfin tuna at 40 & 50 lbs. and another Dorado at 40 lbs. that I lost at the boat. Needless to say, I was worn out and told the boat captain, "No Mas". I caught both small and large mouthed bass and both are a lot of fun. The fish I'd like to catch are a Wahoo and a Roosterfish. Heading to Mexico later this year and will definately do some fishing.
