I went paintballin today, my 2nd time. I wanted to look into buying a gun (mainly because the rentals bite), I was wonderin if anyone had any suggestionsas to a good gun less than $300? Ive seen how expensive some of them can be, but I won't be going to often (maybe every few months or so), I just need somethin nice so I'll never have to use a rental...I don't know to much about the technical side yet, but I will be researchin a bit.
After gettin my butt kicked cause I couldnt hit my target quick enough, I think I'll need one soon...
-
I haven't kept up on paintball technology in the last few years, but I have had great service from my Tippmans. I've owned 2 Model 98's. Both great guns, very reliable, rugged, and simple to maintain.
As I don't play much anymore I've thought about selling my autococker and going back to the 98's. As great as the autococker is, I don't like worrying about breaking it. The 98's... there's nothing to break on them.
-
Tippman 98 is a good gun for the price.
I too shoot a heavily modded 'cocker

Paint balls? Who in the World would paint their balls? Not to mention the wire brush and terpintine to get all the paint off of them....

my nephew has a spyder, it's ok. You can even get some mods for it.. he has an electronic trigger.. throws a lot of paint... not real impressed w/ the reach though.
Tpimmans are bullet proof.

Here's my 2000 Autococker with a few mods.

You really can't go wrong with Tippman's. I owned a .68 carbine as my first marker, 16" ceramic barrel and I could shoot more accurate than anyone on the field.
I had that for about a year then some guys wanted me on a team (which I ended up captain) so I needed to upgrade gear.
The cocker is stock except for:
WGP Hinge Trigger (Eclipise makes a nicer one, but I was broke at the time)
Bomb 4-way valve
Sticky Grips
Upgraded bolt for better air delivery to the ball
Black Ice regulator
It's a quite low pressure gun, it took me a lot of hours of tinkering to get it to the point where it was reliable, the speed was actually adjustable and the timing was fine. On a 68 cu in tank at 4500psi I can shoot damn near a case.
Anyways, I'd say Tippman as your first marker. They are as simple, reliable and idiot proof as they come. If that doesn't suit your fancy, I'd say a Piranha. I've used these in some handicap games (NPPA guys vs Amateurs, Amateurs get to use their regular markers) and found them to be very reliable, simple and quieter than a spyder. A spyder barks like a dog and has a funky sound to it when fired, I don't like it. They're good markers for some, and some swear by them but I never was one to like them.
The most important part of your new setup will be the barrel. I had a 16" ceramic on my first as I mentioned (I wish I could remember the manufacturer) and it fit PMI Premium paint perfectly. My J&J Edge system has several sized bases to get a good paint-to-barrel match. Another note on tippmans, they are HPA (High Pressure Air, or "Nitro") ready. So you can buy the marker, use C02 until winter, pick up an HPA tank and use that. When the time comes to upgrade, you can sell the marker only and you will already have a good HPA. That's handy for spreading costs out over time.
I haven't been to sleep yet and its 0630 EST so if this doesn't make perfect sense, my apologies. Spelling errors I apologize for in advance if I have made any.

Go for airsoft. Much more fun. Way cooler guns.

sunking, is that a P80 in the last pic or what? i havent seen one of those suckers in years and i always wanted one.
i personally pack a vm68 with a rear co2 feed and a 20 inch barrel. the gun is probably longer then an m16 and sounds just as loud. some of the kids who play with me ask me what it is and i tell em its older then they are :)
-
KP-2 ( or 3, its been awhile) Sheridan pump overhaulded by Palmers Pursuit shop. Fancy valving, honing, ect. I can outrange all the pray and spray Angel kids and get more kills with 10% of the paint they use... fun stuff.
I remember when the VM68s came out. Everyone had these super long barrels on them. Gun turned out to be a bomb , had alot of valving flaws.
-
I've had my Tippman 98 for about 3 years and haven't had a single problem with it.
-
Paintball is fun, like a water balloon fight with painfull incentive. Airsoft is silly. I like the look of the feed mechanism on the tippman a5. Looks like it would cut down on common problems. I'm not into paintball enough to buy anything though.

Still use my .68 Carbine w/ a bolt and Dye BoomStick. It is STILL the quietest marker with the 15 people or so that I play with. It is also 8 years old and the copper tube has been replaced. Other than those mods and that, NO PROBLEMS.
I am considering the Tippmann A-5 as my next marker, as my CURRENT Dye Boom Stick will screw in without an adapter.

I don't know much about the A5, but the Boomstick is a good barrel and I don't have one bad thing to say about the .68 carbine. Wanna sell it? I'll trade my autococker for it (and a little $$) :)
-
I've had the Tippmann Prolite for close to 8 years - never had a single problem with it - only needed to overhaul it twice, if that and it was just to replace the trigger spring and lube'r up.
Upgraded to the A5 this past March. The A5 uses a lot more air then my prolite - and of course you go through more rounds with the automatic option b/c i've got a response trigger.
Bottom line - I love the A5 - its like my own Thompson SMG.
HOWEVER - when it comes to reliability - I CANNOT beat my Prolite. I've been backed in the corner so many times with that - at long ranges with a decent barrel - forget about it. (For non-New York'ers - that means it ****ing rules, owns, you cannot beat it).
Wolf
P.S.
I've got some kickin video at Skirmish USA in a 300 person assault - if someones got some space i'll send it to u and post it up

To people that haven't played I've always described paintball as a form of hightech tag , the pain I say is equal to being swatting with a willow tree branch.
In airsoft you find the folk that wanna play war and pretend they are rambo ect..
two different camps.
-
Yea I prefer being able to hit what I aim at though, and I dont like to run around in flouresent pink suits. You're right though, 2 different camps. Can sting a bit when up close, but thats part of the fun :)
-
I have a boomstick on my cocker. Best barrel I've had... I recommend it. Have the same sticky grips.
Different Reg/bolt... my duck only goes to 3000 psi.

Well depends on where you're hit and from how far. Worst hits for me have been on my head. Dazed me momentarily, and left me with a big lump and a scab on my scalp. Feels like getting hit with a marble from a slingshot. Luckily I've never taken one in the nads.
The main malfuction I've seen with paintball markers is feeding multiple balls at once. The rotor feed thingy on the a5 looks like it would prevent that.
-
Well you're an idiot just asking for it if you play without a cup.
Worse shot I took was way back in the day when we wore those tiny masks that covered your eyes and mouth only. It was 40-50 degrees in the fog around 8 in the morning, freezing. I got hit right in the upper ear. When it's that cold your ears are already throbbing. I just remeber gritting my teeth and concentrating on breathing, not to get upset and lash out at the guy.
Worse shot I saw was one my buddy took. The local field had this maze made of old garge doors and lumber. Each team started on opposite edges of the field. In the center of the field was the maze which had a flag hidden inside. To win you'd take the flag to the enemies flag pole where they started from. Only the guys with balls would go inside this maze of pain. To make a long story short. I saw my buddy come out with his gun over his head walking bent over. As he go closer I saw blood pooling through his camo t-shirt. It looked like he was shot with a real gun. He pulled up his shirt and he had four nipples, two which were bleeding. He still has the scars. OUCH
-
Can the A5 be fired semi-auto as well as full auto? Is there a mode selector?
I may be interested in this. The local fields here have a semi-auto only rule but I have a real good history with tippmann's.
I don't play enough to justify using an autococker, and every time I play it seems like something goes wrong and I spend more time fixing it than I do playing. I am not as quick with repairs and timing issues as I used to be and spend too much time re-learning how things work.
-
Thing with the cockers is.... their design is taken from the guy that makes the Palmer Guns... You buy the cocker then you spend almost the same amount to "trick" it out... with the Blazer I paid once and have a better gun outta the box...go figure.. alll I can do is laugh. But it's all about popularity on the pball fields these days not what you know.

Worse shot I ever took was in the back. The ball literally pushed in and touched my right kidney. I tried standing still, but just dropped to my knees, the guy that shot came over helped me back to our rally point (he went back into the game).

Is anyone familiar with the Angel markers? Just curious, I saw them on ebay, but a little expensive.

Back in my paintballer days I played against a team of guys who all shot angels. This was back in the day when the nitro gear was just coming out so alot of amateur teams like mine still shot spyder TLs and guns like that.
Well we went up agaisnt some Angels and I gotta tell you the fire power was amazing. They would pin us down and we couldnt move. Now this was like 10 years ago so im sure that things have changed quite a bit but ive been out of the scene for about that long so I dont know what the guns are like today.
If they are anything like they use to be they are worth the money.
-
Angel = High end electronic marker. Many many many NPPL tourney players use them. I never saw the reason to have one. I was low on the totem pole of markers with my basically stock autococker but I could still hit them as well as they could hit me.
Didn't see many cockers on the circut for the short time I played.
The cocker is a good marker as long as its timed and tuned. They are built stock now a lot better than when they first came out, and after 1999 or so there are very few timing issues due to the threaded rod to the 4way valve and a number of upgraded bits.
I simply neglect mine now and it seems the less you use it, the more it doesn't run right. sigh.
Anyone wanna buy a cocker? As is-$300.

For $300.00, actually a bit more..
You could get into WWII reenacting, reenacting Russian..
Or for less then $300.00 you could do French Resistance/partisan

I did the "unthinkable" to someone using an Automatic (Illustrator). I would take my "inferior" Tippmann 68 carbine. I ran the moron (who was fresh out of Marine Corps boot camp) out of ammo. He surrendered. All I did was point my marker in the air on the opposite side of the ridge, he'd release a chitstorm of paint. I lost maybe 80 paintballs to his 450. Underdogs win often in Paintball with brainpower against the "Favorites" and their firepower.

I have a couple guns. An Oracle, an 03 cocker and an Angel A4 Fly.
-
I'm old and slow. I make sure I bunker someone every time I play. People make a big deal out of balls per second..... there really is more to it than that.
-
Tippman's are nice for noobies. You can hammer nails with them, dunk it in mud, spray it off, and keep playing.
Spyders are good for noobies too. I like the way they feel better than the Tippman's, but that's just my opinion. Had one back in '98 when there was only 3 versions of it :) Wish I'd kept it as a backup.
Owned at some point or another 2 automags, 3 autocockers, 1 angel, 1 palmer pursuit "stubby" typhoon (converted to electronic since), a matrix, an excalibur, 2 'timmys, and more sidekick semi's than you can shake a stick at. I'm getting a new 'timmy with a WAS board. I'm going to hit 40bps in semi. It's gonna be neat.
btw, as for semi/full auto. You're not gonna see that on anything but electric markers... unless you hook up a battery powered servo in the trigger guard. It's also not allowed at the majority of fields due to insurance regulations. The scenario promoter I normally play uses Lloyd's of London sports insurance just so we have the option of full-auto, and then only at 9bps, and only during the day. It's not hard to blow past 9bps in semi auto with some practice.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Airsoft sucks! The guns are cool, but the majority of the players (in this town) have no aggression whatsoever. We (myself & some "paintball" friends with airsoft guns) have been outnumbered (horrendously, 10 vs 40+), and completely mauled the "airsofters" on a whim. It's kinda sad.

Sounds like you need to learn how to maintain a piantball gun. Back in the 80s-early 90s everyone that had a tippman were out for the day after 1-2 games. They had issues with their bolts and 1 piece designs. But thast probably way before your time. I know exactly what I am talking about. Thank you.

Mmm, maybe I should sold you my typhoon. It rarely worked, and the trigger was horrible. I also don't agree with his "pro-touch" trigger job. Why do I have to pay $90 for a "trigger job" that should be on the "custom" gun in the first place? The PGP grip on them sucks something fierce. You can't even tap holes for a regular bottomline to it. They're also obscenely heavy chunks of nickle. Mine was also possessed. First, the 4-way o-rings froze. Next, the bolt's o-rings. Then, the hose fitting to the lpr kept backing out. Keep in mind, it'd chrono perfect, and wait to fail 5 seconds after I'm getting shot at. Finally, the ram blew out completely. I gave up. It beat me. I handed it over to a mechanically & electrically inclined friend for an electro conversion.

I second this philosophy... the older guns are far more accurate then the current weapons which are designed for maximum paint down range.. (though some are decent with accuracy but will cost you your first-born..)
I still got a bushmaster pump rifle (and rent on range a semiauto as backup) with long barrel and silencer ( the old weapons are loud and i get 5 more inches of barrel) for sniping. (scope velocity adjuster you name with a round paintball I can hit something consistantly at 50-75 yards which is silly in painball with most engagements under 25 yards..)
get yourself a tippman (ak47 of paintball dunk it in water beat on it etc.. it still works..)
anyone remember splatmaster pistols made out of expoxy... (only metal on those things was the trigger/valve assembly and the barrel....) late eighties...

My spyder never gave me an issue on the field of play.
In reference to your other post I can remember the first time I ever went to a field to play wood ball. I was using a simple brass eagle gun and took out this guy shooting a spyder, he got so pissed it was great. Then I got lit up from behind, that hurt.

As stated, I have owned a single, just ONE Marker for 8 years, a Tippmann 68 Carbine. The ONLY problem was the copper expansion tube is now a stainless steel braided line.
I KNOW how to maintain, as did the OTHERS I play with. They NEVER went through a day without a problem with a Kingman Spyder, NEVER. I have heard this from others. It is luck of draw when it comes to Spyders.

Sunking,
Normally I keep a tight lip until my bull**** detector is lit up like a christmas tree - so for the sake of those who have played for a very long time (like your self) - realize that the 80's and 90's were a time when paintball was still frowned upon as an underground sport with little backing whether corperate or otherwise.
That being said - the quality of what we used then (with perhaps the exception of my Prolite which I can immerse in water literally for days and still play without issue) has improved by leaps and bounds - and your argument was basically nullified by better QC and simplified designs.
But accusing someone on the board of not knowing their **** without a shred of proof of knowing their background - well - to be perfectly honest - it doesn't engender much in the way of trust of your opinions.
Respectfully,
Wolfala

My tippman 68 was bullet proof. In fact, when 'cockers came out, I brought my '68 along as back up.
Sunking, you're full of shiit.

Id love to find 60 cal paintballs for my Tippman SMG-60 long barrel. I had a second one I sold on eBay to a special effects division of Paramount. They wanted everything, stripper clips (the plastic pieces that held the paintballs) and anything else I was willing to part with. They told me they use a special paint pellet with a spark "charge" for action movies, etc. Beats me, they sure paid top dollar!
-
i dont know about new model spyders bout I had a compact and an SE, and those were two of the most basic and trouble free guns I've ever owned. never had any trouble with either of em, and back then the spyder was cutting edge in an era where most fields rented pumps.
i really want to pick up a sheridan p-68 someday. i've always wanted one something fierce, but ebay prices are ridiculous. 175 some guy is asking for one.
