Not sure if this best demonstrates Microsofts flawless code or the perception that Americans dont get out much ;)

If you run afoul of the default route preferences, that's what you get.  Just changing the preferences to discourage ferry trips and encourage small road usage would probably result a very direct route.  Garbage in, garbage out...
