Title: Track IR vector usage.
Post by: Stone on January 20, 2005, 04:52:39 AM
Second day of using the TrackIR 3pro with vector expansion.

I am trying to use it in PAN mode for starters.

It is very hard to aim and fire.

When fully zooming, very hard to track objects / ac. View just jumps around alot.

The check 6 view is not as good as the old one.

I am just wondering if others has had same troubles, and maybe have some tipps and tricks ?

Most of that is just getting used to it. Mnay players found they are using a lot more body-english than they thought they were (me).

The best advice I can give it to increase your deadbands, this helps that aiming for me. I posted my current vector profile in the other vector thread that is stilla ctive. Other than that, just practise, the more you use it the more you'll get used to it.

haven't tried it yet, but someone in an earlier thread mentioned some type of toggle that took them to the regular view mode while shooting. This makes a lot of sense to me.

I have been using it a week and the first couple of days I had the exact same issues.  Here is my list of changes I made and now I don't have issues.  In fact now I love and and use it without even thinking about it.  It is so much more natural than using the stickhat for all the views.

Make sure the TrackIR is 30 inches to 40 inches from your head.  I had to put mine as far back on the monitor top as I could get it and still let it see me.

Take the wire frame off the hat and sit it on the hat bill.  I use a very small piece of double stick tape.  I did these two things because I kept flipping my view upside down.  I spent awhile in the calibration??? mode of TrackIR software and saw that I would lose sight of one of the little reflective squares if I turned too far to the left.  These two things stopped that from happening.

I did not like the zoom in and out so I made a HUGE deadband on the Z axis and then just a little deflection at the ends.  Now I never accidently move in and out unless I REALLY mean to.

I turned ROLL off in the TrackIR because I rolled my head every time I bank and it was messing me up personally.  If I ever learn to hold my head still I will turn it back on but I don't know what it would do for me.

I fixed the Y axis so it had a deadspot with little deflection down but very AGGRESSIVE deflection up (Turn the mirror button off when you do this in the profile screen).  This lets me move down a little bit if I really want and makes it very easy to move up and look over cockpit obstacles like the rear seat, etc.

Map the recenter view button in AH to your joystick.  I found I moved a WHOLE lot in my chair and I automatically push this now as I go to a guns solution.  It recenters my head view.

I turned smoothing up to 30 or 35%.

HiTech please fix the six view it is the major problem with using TrackIR now. :frown  Let us save the view like with the hat and have that be the view we see when we turn..  When I check six I hit the hat for six view and move my head back and forth to check six.  It works but it does take a couple of extra seconds.

I mapped the TrackIR F9 key to a spare throttle button and I turn it on and off when I have to type alot or use GV guns.  Again just personal preference.

As you are getting the profile set up the way you like it consider hitting your forward view and holding it as you shoot at NME.  It will stabilize the view until you get the profile fixed to suit your individual style. or turn off TrackIR with F9 key as you shoot then flick it back on as you fly past their debris.

After three years flying with a hat for viewing I have to say old habits are hard to break but TrackIR makes it feel so much more real for me. and I frees up my thumb from the hat.  All in all I heartily recommend it.

Oops forgot one thing.  I was using a rolling office chair for computer chair.  I found when in good dogfight I would sometimes kick too hard on rudders to shift in the seat too hard and roll around.  This would throw off the view at the wrong time.

Again this is my fault as I move way too much and my family loves to laugh at me when I fly.

I switched to a normal chair with four legs and no wheels and that fixed it for me.

Thx, I try your tips.

I also think the 6-view is bad, so I fly YAK for now ;)

I taped the vector think on top of my head phone, it seems to work beter that way :)

I hope I get used to this.

How about when zooming in to look at town or field?
For me its very hard to find & keep in center the objects. Its like there is no fine tuning at all.

Check your TrackIR profile and you will see F8 is precision that slows the response I think.  Not sure I don't really use it but I think that is what it is for.

I have a TrackIR Pro 3D with the Vector enhancement. I went back to dot tracking because of the 6 view issue, especially in green house canopies like the P47D-11. It would be nice if the 6 view was mapped to your view file like in dot tracking mode. But I would settel with a "rear view mirror view" mapped to a key toggle.

Other than increasing the deadbands this was the biggest single improvement I've found.

Couldn't agree more! I've been using the top coolie hat for views since the original Thrustmaster FCS came out. When was that, 1989? Talk about an old habit, try 15 years...LOL.

Title: Combo F12 F9 Button
Post by: MnkyMeat on January 21, 2005, 10:30:18 PM
Hey,

I havent been using the tracker for long,, just got a new PC so will use it more.

The best trick I can offer you is...

If you have a stick with programable buttons (I have saitek X-45)
Program one of your buttons as a combo set.
I have one of my thumb buttons set to both F12 and F9

its is set to time   so If I tap the button quickly it just hits F12 and centers my view
(this helps if you shift in your seeat) and if I hold the button down longer It Hits F12 and then F9 wich causes the view to center and and dissable tracking
this way you can get your shot off without messing it up my trying aim with your head.

hope this helps

Doh,

Glad to hear you get the system working with no probelms, but I have now given up on the vector and try to get īTIR to work with dot only.

Enven now I got problems, and I cant say its perfect.

I would be very hapy if some one who has the system up and running, could please send som screen shots of the green dots Tracking display.

Id like to comapre my 3 green dots to a working system to try to figure out what is wrong :(

just make sure when you move you arnet going outside the box.  Closer to the center and a little bit low is where i have it so  i can look up. You have to take account for the fact that there is a bill on that hat so the dots are forward of your eyes, takes a little getting used to.

That is key, some extreme moves like checking 6 and leaning around the headrest can result in the dots "leaving the box" and then it all gets screwed up. That is why I get better results with the TIR about 36 inches away from the bill of my hat.

I'll second the advice, although it seems pretty basic, that you should map some keys to the joystick. I have not only the TIR comands of center and off but also the AH comands mapped to mine. Once I get comfortable enough with it I'll have 16 different view keys free to play with :D
