Of course, only an idiot would bring them down to the level of personal interaction, but still, as an easy way to classify things, they work.

Are these the kind of statistics yer talking about?

Categories are useful, no doubt. They help put things into a tidy context. They turn a 10 minute story into a 2 minute story.

I wanna hear the 10 minute version - just me.

In both examples, however, the sterotype was not voluntary to their race, it was forced upon them by their circumstances. Yet today, both are considered to be stereotypes.
