I find the most difficult part of helping people during their two week trial period is identifying who they are. I think a fine simple solution would be to assign all newcomers into a default squadron (I'm sure someone can think of a clever name) so that both friend and foe can easily identify them and treat them more appropriately.
Many newcomers I've encountered are embarrassed/shy and don't ask for help- but if you offer it they'll gladly accept it. Veterans tend to forget how difficult Aces High is for those accustomed to arcade sims- or no sim. Even an average pilot can be of incredible help to a green recruit- but identifying who needs help is often more than half the battle.

We already have that, it's called "JG2".

I think that is an excellent idea Pavel - a quick look at the roster would tell you how new someone is.

Well good idea I'm a newbie and I found this simulator to difficult, maybe if every newbie can identify him self , the veteran pilots can help him, maybe a newbie should make his game id somthing like sos_yak and when veteran pilots see the sos means that this guy needs help . or if the veterans don't want to lose his time engagin a rookie
just see his nickname and leave
just a suggestion .

BEE Our K/D is actually calculated using a special Polish formula. The displayed value is actually 1/3 the real value, so that we don't become overconfident. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

hehehehe funked... it sure seems like it (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Hmmm
357th Squad K/D 1.4 , guess we could be I 1/2 JG2 (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/cool.gif)
And i have taken at least 12 people up in me p51 as an observer so they could get the idea of flying, Evasives and Tactics. I also get them to turn there film on if they can,or ill film it and send it to them via email.
This does help them a great deal.

That's a realy good idea wardog... didn't know that you could turn on the film when flying with someone.
What would be very nice for educational purposes is let people fly in your cockpit but follow your views. I mean we all scan and use the different views when performing ACM. It would be usefull for new guys to watch how the old sticks use their views to keep track of the bogey. after all lose sight = lose fight. (has been difficult explaining that to most new guys (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) )

Funked's JG2 comment was cute and worth a LOL, but I doubt he intended to turn this into a "my squad's better than your squad!" thread.
From what I've seen newcomer retention is a serious concern. Not that it's stricly anyone's responsibility to help rookies, but the more flyers we have the sooner we'll likely get things many of us want, like a historical arena. So is putting the newcomers in a default squadron worth doing or not?
<S> all who seek to aid the newcomers.
Wardog- Out of those dozen or so you've helped, how many do you estimate have gone on to become a regular? Not that low numbers like these are enough to draw any real statistical conclusions, but I'm still curious. I've probably tried to help about half a dozen folks and only one I know has went pay- and I think he went bish and joined your squad (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

<S> Bee, yes I was vulching the other night LOL. Got the last one as we were both ditching with dead engines. I ended up bouncing along the grass right behind him. Bounce Spray Bounce Spray Slide Bounce Spray BOOOOOOOOM. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Pavel, to get back on topic, I still think we need to have the trainers given some kind of marking on the roster in the main arena. There are I think 12 trainers right now, plus another crew starting soon. Make it easy to find a trainer, and then have a login message that says "Trainers Are Denoted By (Whatever), Please Contact Them If You Need Help". Even better would be the Warbirds "page trainer" button which automatically tunes a radio to a trainer alerts him that you need help.
I think this is the best way to do it. Marking newbies would not be that easy, plus there are plenty of guys who have been here a while that want/need help.

Well today I opened my account and much to my surprise found that I absolutely suck,..I have no patience, and get generally pissed off when I shouldnt. I cant work the radio, my planes wont turn and I cant drop my extra fuel tanks (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif). I get seasick with the trip to the hanger, the distance numbers next to useless (you guys shoot at 800 yards?),etc etc, squeak, whine, moan.
I would appreciate some help if some one will point me where to go. This isnt my first time in AH, have been looking in occasionally since it first came about,.... I never had to ask for general help before and it makes me angry (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) .
BTW for you guys who dont know me I'm the guy who used to give funked chute lessons in warbirds lol (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Just jokin funked!! ..BTW that JG2 sounds interesting if ya'll looking for someone to polish the planes or do latrine duty cause that about all they let me do in JG3 in WBs (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I Just got done talking to a few WB trainers. What a good system they have.
Anytime HTC wants to start something like that, they can e-mail me & I'll be glad to spend ALL my time just training new folks.
I'm not the greatest fighter, but I can fly well & have many years of RL Military Instuctorship under me belt.

dgsbdy,
I have some really basic help pages up at http://www.reddragons.de/aceshigh/tactical.htm (http://www.reddragons.de/aceshigh/tactical.htm)
They deal with view setup, joystick setup, joystick and keymapping, and radio setup and useage. There is also a page on abbreviations, Situation Awareness, and How to avoid the Head On.
Since I won't be flying in the Main Arena much for a couple of months keep checking here for notices of new articles on the site (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

I think the "SOS" idea was a good one. Maby for the 2 week trial?

According kill/death ration, check XII Legion (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) 3.7547 is not that bad, is not it? (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) (Well, honestly I just hacked the HTC page, that is it (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif).
Yeah, I help novicies by advices and have them joined in my spit, but much less often than I would like. Many of them symply do not join even when you propose it, they are eager to fight from the first minute.
And yes, game is more complicated for novices, heard several comments about it in the MA.

What I find interesting is comments from other flight sims enthusiasts that try out AH for less than a week, then go back to their old stomping grounds, make a post saying "FM is porked, too mushy, etc. etc.", usually means their egos will not allow them to understand and learn a more difficult FM.
I on the other hand, fly HTH in Warbirds, and find their FM (after playing this game so long) very arcadish, hell, my 4 year old plays relatively well on the realistic FM in WB's. He can easily land the plane in WB's. He's trying in AH, but is kinda sloppy on the approach. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
