I would tend to agree. Not that the Eagles are a bad team. they certainly are not. But Because Belicheck is that good of a coach.

Dynasty, such a silly word in football. Just a good group of solid football players who believe in each other playing selfless football. The same can be said for the organisation, from the owner down to the water boy.

Hats off to the Pats. It was like watching a wrestling match between two great wrestlers, but one being a couple years older and more experienced. Every time the Steelers got some momentum, the Pats took it right back. Good job; the game was never in question.

I thought the biggest, or at least one of the biggest mistakes the Steelers made was not going for it on 4th down near the goal line in the 4th quarter.
With the way the time clock was running with only a feild goal they still would have needed two scores and it was unlikely they were going to have the time for that barring a quick turnover so a feild goal putting them down by 11 was pointless.
They should have made the decision to do or die then.

Bill Cowher is a coward. Always plays conservatively, plays to not lose, thats not playing to win, and will never win the big games that way.
-
Not sure it was Cowher, JBA. Postgame quote from Roethlisberger, re the interception that was run back for a TD:
"All week, it was funny. I have been throwing, reading that safety jumping the tight end and throwing over the top to Hines (Ward) and for some reason, I was thinking just to move the ball down the field instead of taking the big shot. Maybe I should have thrown to Hines (Ward)."
That sounds to me like a rookie who is playing conservatively because he's unsure of his ability.
I agreed with the field goal call. That's the one that you would need with 4 seconds left, but right now instead. I mean, you're down by 2 TDs and you need 3 scores, but only 2 of them have to be TDs. Get the third one NOW.
To me, there were several big plays, but to me the most important was when the Steelers went for it on 4th and 2 in the first quarter and didn't make it. Cowher's quote, when asked about that: "Yes. I liked that part of the field. I would do that again too." That doesn't sound like a coward to me. The Steelers were trying to assert their dominance at that moment, and the Pats were having none of it. It was a big risk, because if it backfired it would give control of the tenor of the game to the Pats, and it did.

With the Pats, it's more than just the usual concept of "coaching." It's that they've assembled a team of good, smart, versatile players and they use everyone on the roster. This goes against the typical model of building a team around a few franchise players. That old model, while it still works and (obviously) can be a money-maker for the stars and the team, isn't beating the Patriots model - and it isn't cost-effective.
The scariest thing about the Pats is that most of the same players will be back next year, plus who knows who they'll pick up as a free agent.
As for the Steelers, yeah, I agree that Cowher plays too defensive. Bettis has a fumble and they yank him. In pre-game you kept hearing about them not wanting to have to rely on Ben winning the game, and how Ben didn't want to let the team down. For all their bravado, they were more afraid of losing or making mistakes than of winning. Belicheck didn't do that - Cowher did. He always has too - especially with his QB's and RB's.
I think McNabb will do OK against the Pats. He's experienced enough to avoid throwing INT's. The Eagles just don't have the depth the Patriots do, though. Or the experience of winning the SB in the clutch.

i dont want to get too excited just yet. its been a good run though, thats for sure.
JBA, you should take a page from the pats playbook and not get overconfident. you must not be long-lived in boston if you haven't learned from the sox not to count your chickens :)
my sporting life would be perfect if the whoopee NHL had a season and the bruins actually spent some money the right way instead of how they usually operate. their cheapskate owner needs to go. tired of going out in the quarterfinals every year

The Eagles are going to suprise a few of you.

Actually, it was the play right after that. Brady looked to his right at David Givens running the crossing route underneath the safety, the safety bit on it big time jumping the route leaving Deion Branch one on one with the corner. As soon as brady saw the safety bite on the fake he hit Branch on the post. The safety should never have left the corner without help deep, he got cute and got burned. The last thing the Steelers wanted to do was give up the big play and let New England get out in front by double digits. You can't watch Brady's eyes, he will fake you out, you have to play with discipline and stay where you are supposed to be, that corner got left on an island, he should have had help.

I dont think the play on 4th and 2 in the first quarter was that big of a play. Personally I would have attempted a field goal or if behind by more faked it with Maddox as the place kicker.
As soon as they lined up, I knew they were going to give it to Bettis. Of course Hind sight is 20/20, but it seemed the Patriots knew exactly what was going to happen.
Why not screen or Shovel it out?
I definatley dont think he is a coward though, but I somewhat agree on playing too conservatively. But I think the biggest problem is his play calling in general.
You knew the Patriots were going in Defensivley to..
A. Stop the Steeler Run
B. Force Ben to throw interceptions
Everybody knew that before hand. So why not switch it up on them?, Line up with Bettis and 3 or 4 Wide Recievers, force the Patriots to guess.
If the Patriots know you are going to run the Ball every First Down, And they line up with 9 Players on the line of scrimmage, Dont run the ball!!!! Its that simple!!!
Call an Audible and go to the Air!!!

Oh, the poor Broonz. All those years of idiot Harry Sinden trying to recreate the Orr-Espo dynasty through aggressive and haphazzard trades. Hoping to once again get lucky. I grew up watching that team ... Orr, Espo, Derek, Cheesie, Hodge, Bucyk, Eddie J, Cashman, "Pie" McKenzie. Nothing else in hockey has come close. Bruins hockey used to be so much fun to watch then.
As for the Steelers, Cowher has always played not to lose, and played predictably, as long as I can remember. And the way he rips a QB or RB apart when they make a mistake, I guess some folks thrive on that. But you look at the way their playoff's always seem to end - it's usually the same way. Maybe it isn't the players. He's done a good job, but I don't see him bringing a team all the way.
This could be a pretty good SuperBowl. I expect the Eagles to hit Brady a lot more than the Colts or Steelers did. And McNabb won't throw INT's - he's too experienced. The Eagles are a pretty well balanced team. But with Charlie Weiss leaving the team at the end of the season, and Romeo Crennel probably gone too - you know those guys see this as their last shot at another championship in a long, long while. And with two weeks to prepare, I dunno, the Pats are gonna be mighty tough to beat.
-
I thought that running Bettis on that play was what it was all about; "Everyone knows it's coming, and we're going to get the yards anyhow." I believe you HAVE TO accept that challenge of getting those yards, but you also have to be versatile enough to try a different play.
I dunno. I see Cowher from the inside, as a fan. I like him as a coach. Is he too conservative, Yeah, probably; but is that a function of him being conservative as a play caller, or of him not having enough confidence in his players that they will deliver the big gamble often enough to make the risk worth it? In this case, I think it's the rookie QB that made the risk of the big pass plays not worth it.

We must be close in age ... those were the days ... I ate, drank, and slept hockey back then. I was the most advid Rangers fan alive ... but always watched in awe of Orr, Espo and god did I love Derek Sanderson.
Nothing better than watching those two teams go at it ... black & white TV only ... WOR out of New York. My dad had a vice-grip permanately attached to the TV antenna pole. I would go outside and turn/tweak it and he would pound on the wall when it came in good. Good ... was like watching a game while sitting in a blizzard thats how snowy the reception was but was always great to watch.
Pats will beat up on the Eagles ... after watching how they drubbed the Colts and Steelers ... Eagles have no chance.

He almost did it in the early 90s i thought... i missed out on the greats mentioned above but i was diehard right around the time they won the adam's division. i remember their first line being juneau oates neely sweeney and bourque with moog in net. i used to think those guys were gods. neely was half the heart of that team though and once he had to retire bourque couldn't do it on his own. i hate jacobs with a passion because every year he only spends enough money to get interest and into the playoffs where they get bounced in the 1st round. i was glad for ray when they finally moved him to a contender and i think it was classy that he brought the cup back to boston like he did. (and sinden threw him under the bus for it, of course)
i miss hockey :(

Yeah ... I watched the B's in B&W on WSBK channel 38. This was when there were only 2 UHF channels in Boston and they were only on like 12 hours of the day (during which they mostly showed "The Three Stooges". The games against the Canadiens were always big back then.
I guess it's a blessing and a curse that I grew up where I did and when I did. I got that great Bruins era, plus the Bird era with the Celtics. If you ever get a chance to rent that SI video on Bird you should grab it. Most people only remember him from his last years, when his back was messed up. But at his peak he was unstoppable in a way that Shaq or Kobe will never understand - and footage of those days is on that video compilation.
As far as the Pats, their success starts from the top with Bob Kraft. Once they got Victor Kaim out of there, they finally got a real human being running the team. He got the new stadium built and hired a coach who would build something to last, instead of the crap Parcells pulled. Or should I say "pulls." The New England area will never forget or forgive the Tuna.
Personally, I don't care as much about the Superbowl. If the Eagles win, they deserve a break. A Pats fan knows how much it sucks to go so long without a title. I got my satisfaction out of seeing the Patriots shut Manning down, and then get payback on the Steelers.
I still think the Pats will win, though. :D

Well, a field goal would have been about 57 yards, so that was out of the question. And the Pats would have been thinking fake all the way. You don't want to out think yourself either, you try to flat pass or shovel or some kind of gadget play and it doesn't work, you look like an idiot for having an all pro offensive line, the Bus, and the second best running attack and not trying to get 2 yards. Live by the sword, die by the sword.
I definatley dont think he is a coward though
Of course not, that's silly

lol, that was everyone's game plan for the Steelers, and it didn't work all season.

Why mess with success?

Well, that's where it isn't so simple. Sure, they were bringing men up, but then they would rush 2 and drop 9 into coverage at the snap of the ball. The Pats do a great job of disguising their coverage, you do not realize what you are seeing and are forced to guess yourself.
The Steelers gave their fans a great season, unfortunately, only one team wins their last game.

In the end, that's what happened. All year, that was everyones' game plan, and the Pats were the only team good enough to make it work. Two great teams, one was better. End of story. Same thing happened to the Raiders a lot in the '70s (mostly at the hands of the Steelers), the Bills in the '90s, the Vikes forever.
It'll be a great SB, I think. I can't root too hard for the Pats, I live in the Eagles AOR and most of my friends are bird fans.
