Maybe there's a reason why that is?

Yeah there is, because apple is popular and it got advertised well... It is a good product, but there are better ones. I knew somehow that would come up heh.
See'ing as that was no help, anyone else have an opinion. :p

depends on how much memory you want and what features.
I have a 20 gig 4th gen ipod and must say am pretty happy with it.
Tha being said I would stay away from Dell--look at Rio they seem to have good products.
But honestly the ipods are popular becuase they are good and the 4th gen is leaps and bounds above their previous releases.

If you are at all interested in sound quality, get the Creative over the iPod any day. I've been using a Creative Jukebox 3 for a little over 2 years now, and I find it indispensable on trips and for moving music from inside to outside, to the car, and from home to office and such. I plug it into some pretty high end systems and it sounds acceptable, considering it's a compressed format. It has line out, so you can use it with the Headroom headphone amps, and digital line out, as well as analog in; you can rip vinyl directly to mp3 if you want to.
The interface is decent enough, and it will automatically make an album into a playlist (with some players the songs play back alphabetically unless you organize them yourself), and there is a really great community that supports the devices, NotMad. NotMad Manager makes your Jukebox appear in windows as a usb drive, allowing drag & drop, windows trees, etc.

I know Ipod has an accessory you can buy that allows you to listen to the music on the harddrive through your car sterio using a radio station. Is the same true for Dell or Creative?

The Griffin Itrip works only with the Ipod, as it's built to fit right on top. The Belkin one, Tunecast I think it's called, can plug into any audio source with a headphone jack. Tunecast is a lot bulkier and requires its own power source, while the Itrip runs right off of the Ipod's batteries.
I have an Itrip, and it is a cool little gadget. Use it whenever I go on a decent car trip.
Btw, I vote you get an Ipod too. :)

IRiver makes a good Mp3 player.

BTW looking for a 20-40GB model.

Had and used them all. The difference between the Ipod and the others is almost impossible to describe. But it's huge.

One of my fellow co-workers got the 20GB model for Xmas, I NEVER Realized how tiny the 20GB one was?! I might try and get one for my B-day in June.
I'm getting a new Subwoofer for my HT setup with our tax check or I'd be all over an Mp3 player.

havent read whole post...
i own the Zen 30GB model
i LOVE it! i use it @ work every day to listen to songs.....
me an 42 used it to listen to music the whole way down to the CON this year,.
the only draw back to MP3 players is the whole "playlist" thing.
if you want to just hear a song it is not easy, from ALL MP3 players i have seen.
making the playlists is the biggest pain in that arse IMHO.
once you have them set up any MP3 player is cool though.
i will say the nomad will go from 8 AM to past 9 PM straight before the battery fails.... and charges in 2-3 hours. also only about $70 to replace from what i hear
BTW i got my 30GB Zen for $219 on clearance from best buy, with a $30 rebate.... thats right under $190 compared to a $300+++ Ipod...... and i backup my pr0n to it, because 3500 MP3's only take up about 11GB.
12GB pr0n and still have 7GB (almost 2000 MP3's) of storage left

It doesn't have a gap.

Meaning that there are no 3 second pauses between songs, for instance PinkFloyd albums encoded in MP3 sound hacked up b/c of the gaps between songs. FLAC (lossless) is a perfect digital copy. The Karma player plays more formats that most, Windows Media,MP3,OggVorbis(freeware encoder with better sound quality than mp3),FLAC,MP3. Another nice feature of the Karma is the interface, very easy to use yet very in depth. It has RIO DJ which can play songs based on use (never listned to, most listened to, by year, by genre, completely random etc etc). I played with Ipod didnt like it, nor did I like the Itunes software. I got a Creative Zen Micro for Xmas and while it was nice, the touchpad was overly sensitive even on lowest setting. The battery life was WAY less than the 12 hours advertised and it locked up frequently, so I sent it back and got the Karma. Very very pleased with it so far, only drawback is that RIO only has 90 day warranty.

speaking of batteries.. the nomad zen battery recharges in like 2 hours, and lasts for over 10 hours constant playing (even messing with it alot too)
AND it only costs like $60 to replace AND is user replacable unlike the ipod
give an idea of battery usage, me an 42 used it on the drive to and from the con this last year....
started up @ 7AM and ran until 9PM when we stopped and it still had life. we were messing with the playlists and advancing tracks all the time too (making the hard drive operate more than needed to strictly play).
i use it every day at work day 1 on the charger all day, off when i leave fully charged. day to play all day on shuffle sometimes i skip a song, it plays until 7 or 8PM before the battery dies. day 3 on the charger all day again.....
rinse repeat
