Hey guys, I saw an old friend for the 1st time in maybe 10-15 years. Turns out he has this hobby.
He has always been a fantasic artist, but when I saw him last I never imagined he would be working with computers and 3d.
What do you think of his work? This is "Tommy"

To me this look fantastic, specialy the "tommy". I envy this guy.
My own stuff never turn out this good,, lol
-
Ah hah! Actual images now...
Those are pretty cool. What kind of software? What sort of input device?
...oh and how does one learn how to do this?
-
I have a couple of friends that do this as a hobby and professionally. They mostly do objects like spaceships and buildings and stuff though.
Their CG people always looked a little to CG'd for me, but your friend's work is phenomenal. Wish I could do stuff like that.

That's pretty cool stuff.
The R2 Builders Group Im in has several of the CGI animators from LucasFilm in it. Some of the stories, and samples, they share are outstanding. We've also got some guys are are CAD geniuses. Its one thing to make a replica, but some of these guys are in the aerospace industry and have used the 3D side to dimension up the way motors, sensors, etc can fit in the droid. Then, modify the prints, print and deliver to machinst...who thinks your a total dork for having R2-D2 blueprints accurate to a thousandth of an inch :p

I can't believe anyone could actually feel this way.

LOL
Its been a challenging project. To make a replica is one thing. To acquire and have accurate data, then fabricate the thing is another. THEN, since its a prop, it has certain limits, yet...since its a famous robot, its a challenge to make him roll, move, rotate, light up, beep, etc ...generally *behave* as we all know him from the movie. For example, the center foot and tilt is a huge challenge. Pneumatics? Linear actuator? You only have so much space and so much power. Or, is it an RC robot you control, or do you fabricate a PC system with a basic AI to move himself around, respond to input, etc etc.
Heck, building a BD-5 was easy...this...is a challenge. Im trying to have him *mostly* done before the next film is out. Plus Id like to honor a promise to take him the pediatric section and also a visit with the autism kids. Looking forward to seeing the kids reactions. So far, they've been pretty wow'd.

When I say my friend was "working with computers and 3d", well I meant it's one of his hobbies. He is a reverend, has a church and a radio show.
And that star wars ship he did years ago, was offered a job by Idustrial Light & Magic to do pre-production work.
He taught himself this stuff.
Used Blender 3D and Lightwave I believe.
Anyway, I pointed him to this BBS, so maybe we will have an interesting new member soon.
-
Ah Lightwave is good stuff
Pricey, as I remember it
-
Amazing.

I don't care who ya are, thats impressive right there.

He just emailed me and said he offered to do some models for HTC.
I guess they said no because they use different sofware. Anyway, I told him that it would be cool if he made some WWII plane models.
He was really into WWII planes back in the day. I hope he has time and does some of that.

Better stay away from the American stuff. Certain companies have issues with models (or so I hear). ;)

thats very professional work...
-
Nice!
-
Wow.. he sure has used many hours to create those
-
Incredible work!
