"LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - At least 10 people were killed and nearly 200 injured on Wednesday when two Los Angeles commuter trains collided after one struck an automobile left on the tracks in what authorities called an aborted suicide attempt by a "deranged" man.
Police and fire officials said the man slashed his wrists and stabbed himself in the chest shortly before parking his Jeep Cherokee on the tracks. But he jumped clear at the last moment and watched as the two high-speed trains smashed together and derailed in a fiery wreck"
What an idiot, don't they have the death penalty in California? Let the Govt help him on his way.

Well dont hold out for it. I am sure an insanity plea or some such bs is coming. Gonna be hard for him to prove insanity after all he did jump out before the train hit.
-
The guy has tried to commit suicide several times. What makes you think he's going to appeal a death sentence?
I say in this case, cruel and Unusual doesn't apply. Keep him alive for 10x60 years, torturing him constantly.
-
I'm not sure why this sorry individual would warrant torture. Put him down quickly and humanely. And maybe install some of these to help out others in need...

unfortunatly the CA crim code on murder will probably not get this guy to special circumstances--need intentionality, he was merely criminally reckless (just a guess on how they indicte) so proably somthing like 1st degree manslaughter or some such nonsense
-
I wonder what the status of his citizenship is....
-
LOL don't hold your breath for his execution.
I think I heard that Richard Ramirez was still alive on appeals .

I couldnt believe how angry I was today. My mother rides the metro every day at that time, workin in L.A....I sat at work horrified thinking the worst. I finally got a hold of her at work, she told me it was the train before her that was in the wreck.

Thats the time between trains down here.
To believe that someone can be so selfish, to think they have no impact on anyone else's life.
Well, this one had an impact on hundreds if not thousands of lives.
I can't imagine what I would've done if my mom happened to leave alittle early for work, if that madman chose an intersection alittle closer to home.
I was relieved, but at the sametime so disturbed as how one individual can refuse to belive there is anyone but themselves that can be hurt, that suffer.
Only one does it take to ruin everything.
To all the lives lost, to all the families tradgedies, to all the injured tonight I pray for, and I hope many can learn that suicide kills more than one person.
-
Body count is up to 11.
-
You still believe that cruel and unusual torture is out of the question?
-
That guy will surely hope he would've just stayed inside the car.

Because he didn't stay in his vehicle.
I guess that is what has be so freaking pissed about this whole thing! Sorry in advance for the rant...
Not that it would be any less tragic, had he died. He still would have killed 11 people in the process. But to, at the last second, say "screw this man, I don't want to die..." and still in the process, take all of those lives...
Disgusting...
And Seraphim, I am glad that your mother wasn't on that train... somebody's was...
-
tie him to a train track

"Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley said prosecutors filed charges for 10 counts of murder with "special circumstances" of committing murder through a train derailment. Under state law, special circumstances allegations can make a defendant eligible for the death penalty.
Cooley said the complaint would be amended to add another count to refer to the 11th victim, found in the wreckage late Wednesday night. "
He's gonna be put to sleep like a little doggie.

I don't think it really matters in CA. They give things like education, hospitilization, benifits, and drivers licences to illegals. Silly CA.

It's pretty clear that ANYONE that wants a Jeep Cherokee should have to apply for a license to use the Jeep, be tested for competency with the Jeep and the Jeep MUST be registered.
That's the only way we're ever going to get a handle of this stuff.
Oh, yeah; there should be a minimum age to use the Jeep too. There should be some device that locks the steering and keeps you from starting the engine unless you have the right key. We've got to keep these things out of the hands of our youth.
Face it, these things were deliberately designed to go way faster than man was intended to move. They are inherently dangerous as our bodies were not built to take impacts at the speed the Jeeps are capable of achieving.
-
I think Toad is trying to analogize us into oblivion.
The accident happened right at a COSTCO. They provided carts to wheel out the injured and fed everyone involved all day with free pizza and stuff. I think they deserve an attaboy and our patronage.
-
So perhaps Costco is liable? I mean, if they hadn't put a store right there maybe they wouldn't have built a road crossing those tracks. No road crossing the tracks, probably no Jeep parked ON the tracks.
Sue Costco!
Also, we should discuss roads crossing railroad tracks in the first place. Historically, there have been many, many accidents where autos hit trains and vice versa. Almost ALL of these accidents were at a "railroad crossing". I think the inherent danger is obvious. There should be laws preventing roads from crossing railroad tracks and vice versa. Any state that doesn't have such laws already should be liable for past train/auto accidents at crossings.
Man, there's a lot of work to do out there.

How sad that it took ten lives for this clown to realize how stupid he is.

On the Train was a whole bunch of Local Job Corps Kids, A lot were killed.
My Dads Ex Girlfriend who was commuting to and From DC Daily normally would have took that train, had it not been for some Extra Work at the Office.

On topic: This guy is going to fry when someone asks him why he didnt just drive the vehicle off the tracks when he decided to live.
Off Topic: Greencloud, could you please explain to me how Sacramento is included in "The Emerald Triangle"? I have always know the triangle to consist of 3 counties, Trinity, Humboldt, and Butte. Did the boundaries move and I missed it?

8th Amendment
Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.
It just can't be cruel and unusual.
Cruel but usual or unusual but not cruel should be okay.
