Gneisenau.  You can tell the difference by the mainmast directly behind the funnel on her, vs some distance back on the others.  Otherwise, she's identical to the Scharhorst I believe.

Actually, all of the named battleships (Bismarck, Tirpitz, Scharnhorst and the Gneisenau) all looked very similar in design.  The Scharnhorst and Gneisenau (IIRC) were sister-ships and looked almost identical at launching.  Both underwent the same mods to their bows, both had catapults removed, both used the same scout planes and were outfitted with the same number of cranes, etc.  The ONLY difference I can find in the two ships is.......

During refit in 39 or 40 the Scharnhorst had the mainmast shipped aft like the Bismarck and the Tirpitz. The Gneisenau did not.

I also considered it could be an early picture of the Scharnhorst before the refit, but two details preclude that possibility.

1)  Before the refit the Scharnhorst had a flat funnel cap, not the raked version in Brady's pic.

2)  There is no coat of arms on the bow in this pic, and both had their plaques removed during the war.

Since this has to be during the war, it cant be an early pic of the Scharnhorst, thus it must be the Gneisenau.

Scharnhorst also had a more blunt verticle bow (as in the early Pocket Battleships) than the clipper type of her sister Gneisenau before the refit. Otherwise they were basiclly similar topside before the refit.

Both ships had several different versions of funnel caps installed during their life times so you have to watch very closely in useing that as a refrence point.

The bows along with the missing pre-war Crest shields is what I was looking at in ID'ing the ship.

would be funny if it was a Hipper class CA and you guys were all making the same mistake that the gunners on the Hood and Prince of Wales made.

The number of portholes above the belt armour indicate it cant be a Bismark class at all.
The single anchor indicates it cant be either pocket Battle ship.

Could it be a Hipper class...to me the guns look to short to be one of the bigger class ships.

Maybe one of the best name its though. wtg Brady.

None of the HIPPER CLASS CA's ever had the mast attached to the funnel structure. That and the 3 main turrets makes it easy to rule out all the other KM Capital Ships.

While the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen were similar at distance, I don't think the Royal Navy gunners would have mistaken one of the Sharnhorst BC's for a Bismarck BB.
