from local news:
MPS teacher rewarded inauguration protest
A Milwaukee Public Schools teacher rewarded members of an eighth-grade class for wearing black on inauguration day, an MPS official confirmed Wednesday.
"The implication was that it was a sign of protest against the inaugural," MPS spokeswoman Roseann St. Aubin said Wednesday of the incident at the Milwaukee Sign Language School.
The school's administration did not know how many students responded to the call to wear black, but it was reported that those who did were rewarded with pizza on inauguration day, St. Aubin said.
St. Aubin said MPS has a policy against political advocacy, and that the school responded to the incident according to that policy. But, because the incident was a personnel matter, St. Aubin declined to discuss how the school responded.
She confirmed that the teacher was still working at the school.

And yes, they are protected by the constitutional right of free speech.

Does the pizza really matter MT? Why is a teacher calling for students to wear black as part of a political protest? I'd really like to see someone explain why this is acceptable.

childrens prayer in school.
dear lord, please guide the commander in chimp through these trying days.
and let him be strong against the forces of evil and darkness that exists in everyone who doesnt think like you.
and lord, will you please bless the bush children...they dont want to use drugs, the liberals make them do it.
just like they did for the president before he swung his addictions to the righteousness of god all that is vengeful and linear thinking about you oh lord.
and forgive karl rove oh lord for his malignings and falsehoods. he was only doing his best to destroy all that is left of the other half of american values...may his lies be holy oh lord.
oh lord, let us answer the eternal question ..."what would jesus bomb?"
and bless condi rice for battling satan in the form of barbara boxer. all questions are the devil oh lord...we pray we may never have to ask them.
we thank you oh lord for hearing our prayers.
god bless the usa...and #@$! everyone else.
amen.
would be wrong in either case. imho.
lets leave the kids out of it.

The teacher did something stupid and the school responded according to their policy. I'm betting the kids will survive.
-
I say good. Now this ***** will have someone sitting in the back of the class with her being threatened to be fired if she sneezes wrong.

The quote does not say the "Call to wear black" came from the teacher.
Sure would like a link to this. The Mil. Fox station doesn't mention a thing about it... weird huh? I still call BS.

It doesn't take a member of mensa and a 4th grade reading level to figure out what happened.
The teacher told her students that if they wore black in protest of Bush's inauguration, should would reward them with pizza.

How bout if a teacher had kids wear all white, including pointy hoods on MLK day in protest of him being the only person in the history of humanity to have a holiday named after him?
that ain't right.... Kids should be able to protest that shouldn't they MT?

Sorry lazs, but if this happened as some here believe then it is wrong on many levels. I just don't buy the story.

Do they celibrate it in the Bronx or Brooklyn?

ok... in the US then MLK is the only human being in the history of humanity that we see fit to honor.
Xmas is supposedly not about the birth of christ who may or may not have existed.

wearing black is a form of protest???
you know there another day, where if someone shows up wearing green they get pizza...
""The implication was that it was a sign of protest against the inaugural,""
so your all getting upset over something that may or may not have actually happened, but apparently the republicans are worse than gays when it comes to finding anything that might be considered a slight against them...
come back when theres definate confirmation that she wanted them to wear black as a sign against the inaugral, and not just as a "see how easy people are to bribe" or some other nonsense...

the teacher could have been rewarding them because wearing black in mourning for our country because this moron is being sworn in again, (so he can throw away more of our money, lives, reputation) shows that those kids are actually paying attention to their countries gov't.
I think paying attention to what those in charge are up to is a good thing, no matter how much this administration wishes we wouldn't.

Christmas is about the birth of Christ, who just about everybody agrees DID exist. the disagreement is to whether or not he still does exist.
so we have Christmas, Columbus day, and we used to have Washington's B-day and Lincolns B-day before they were combined into Presidents day.

Thats just luck of knowledge of the human history.
:rofl Just kidding man
-
Is this a private or public school? It was for deaf children, right?
-
I don't think "just about everyone" agrees that christ existed. I also don't think you would get away with a celebration of christs birth at a school or public building.. I also don't know of anyone who celebrates columbus day and in fact, most schools would go balistic if you tried... Presidents day is not the celebration of any one man.
MLK stands alone in being honored.

here's a list of US Federal holidays (with the law that sets them so you can verify). this is the 2003 schedule, the actual dates of some will vary year to year. note the ones in bold type
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103) establishes the following public holidays for Federal employees. Please note that most Federal employees work on a Monday through Friday schedule. For these employees, when a holiday falls on a non-workday -- Saturday or Sunday -- the holiday usually is observed on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday).
Wednesday, January 1 -New Year's Day
Monday, January 20 -Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Monday, February 17 -Washington's Birthday
Monday, May 26 -Memorial Day
Friday, July 4 -Independence Day
Monday, September 1 -Labor Day
Monday, October 13 -Columbus Day
Tuesday, November 11 -Veterans Day
Thursday, November 27 -Thanksgiving Day
Thursday, December 25 -Christmas Day
This holiday is designated as "Washington's Birthday" in section 6103(a) of title 5 of the United States Code, which is the law that specifies holidays for Federal employees. Though other institutions such as state and local governments and private businesses may use other names, it is our policy to always refer to holidays by the names designated in the law.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
it's been my experience that when you find that you've said something stupid or just plain wrong, you'll look smarter if you just admit you were mistaken.
BTW- I've never met anyone who doesn't believe that Christ existed. I've met a few atheists who deny he was the son of God (and that there is a God), but pretty much everyone I've talked to believes he existed. it's fairly well documented in history.
edit- sorry forgot the Link (http://www.opm.gov/fedhol/2003.asp)

Been good.
Might be driving out to MO in the near future with my sister (dad's not too healthy). I'll give you a ring if we come close to KC. Assuming the number hasn't changed.
-
Apathy... that list looks old. I've not heard it reffered to as "Washingtons Birthday" since MLK day became a holiday. It's called president's day on every callendar I've seen for some time.
-
N/T
-
I thought so too, but that's the 2003 list from the federal web sight. I just added the link.
-
BTW... most Colleges don't have President's Day as a holliday anymore because there's such a concentration of hollidays around January. At first, they cycled between MLK and pres day, but people complained so they dropped pres day and stuck with MLK day.
Columbus day is under serius protest for some reason or another by some party insistant on removing anything remotely white from the calendar. Basically, lazs is more correct than you're ever going to admit.
P.S. That was a pretty stupid response above. Almost as bad as "I don't see what the big deal is."
-
ok... maybe they still have Washington listed (what happened to Lincoln?) but.... you will have to admit that to most people in the U.S. it is "presidents" day. This would be the same as if most state and local schools and agencies called mlk day "civil rights leader day" Columbus? who has even heard of columbus day these days?
Christ? Ok... set up a nativity scene at a federal or state or public place and we will see how much santa clause day is about the birth of christ (if he existed) Lots of people believe king arthur existed too... maybe they both did but Santa gets the billing.
Nope... admit it...MLK day is simple pandering. In the grand scheme of things he wasn't much. Basicly, involved in a movement that was gonna happen anyway. No more, and arguably much less, important than hundreds of humans from not only the world but... this country. Plain old pandering by the lefties. shiny beads and firewater.
