I generally run a 4-3 defense.. and my defense is consistantly rated number 1 in the country.

I think defense might be to easy, unless you guys don't get that.

Anyway.. recruiting.

What are you recruiting for?  If you need to fill a hole, It is obviously better to start with people who are interested in your school (i.e. interested prospects).  However... if you check state prospects, or even all prospects, you may find someone who has high interest in your school but doesn't have you listed in their top 3.

It is OK to go after those people, in my opinion.

A lot of recruiting is based on the "pitch" (i.e. school prestige, coash prestige, play time, location, play calling)... if you manage to call it right on your first time you are golden, you don't have to spend very many points in subsequent rounds to land that guy.

The number of points you spend doesn't matter as much, obviously the more points you spend on a guy, the more positive effect it has.  That said, spending say 10 points and using the right "pitch" is better than spending 50 points and not using the right pitch.

One other thing you may want to start doing once your program is past the point where you desperately need guys every year is to actually spend the points on scouting people.  Now (after 4 years), if someone doesnt have good or excellent discipline, I don't recruit them.  My 2nd and 3rd years I basically had to suspend my best middle linebacker for the season, because the avacado kept pulling violations.  He had "poor" discipline.. so I cut him his junior year, after recruiting his replacement.

Anyway.. one question I do have... do your recievers ALL have stonehands?  My recievers aren't the best in the world.. I usually can't recruit good ones because I rely mostly on the running game on offense (because my recievers can't catch, vicious cycle, that), but they are typically rated 78-85 in catching.

Last season, I was checking various guys stats at the end of the year.. my best reciever had 30 catches with 22 drops.  His catching was a 86.  One of the recievers nominated to the AA team had something like 34 catches and 2 drops.  THAT guys catch rating was a 74.  So how the hell can that guy not drop as many balls as my guy does?

I swear to god, I drop my QB back and the crowd starts chanting "Don't throw it to stone-hands!"... my QB's completion percentage is under 40% (usually more like 33%) for all 4 seasons so far.

Really, really incredibly frustrating.

Odd numbers there Urchin. I will take a look and see what my guys are. My Tight Ends usually have great hands but 90% of their catches are in the 10-20 yard range with my receivers getting anything from 5-70 yard bombs. The crazy thing is those long balls are a higher percentage for my QB's or at least that is what they seem to be.

The trick I think is to get the linemen that can pass and run block. Then you can get good to great position players. Don't go for the best QB out there since you most likely can't land him but get one that is a solid three or four star pick and grab another that is a great Athlete and see what happens when you get the numbers on them.

Well, it mostly isn't that my QB can't throw.. it is my damn recievers can't catch!  My starting QB was rated right around a 90 in accuracy, as is his replacement (who was originally a backup).

The guy that will be taking over next year is only rated around an 85 in accuracy.. but the DROPS are what kill me, not my QB just missing the target.

None of my recievers can catch, doesn't seem to matter what the catch rating is.

I got the same problem, try turning on the pass assist, so you can get an idea of what OPEN really is, cause what we see as open, the computer dosn't really see as open, so he dosn't go for the ball as hard..

I made a perfect TE just to see if he could catch the ball, and he couldn't, -shrug-, runs kill!

Not sure how similiar NCAA 2005 is to NCAA 2003 (which I have), but here is how I recruit:

QB:  Cannon arm, pinpoint accuracy.  Ignore 40 yard times.
RB:  Look for EXCELLENT hands, 40 yard times of 4.3 or less.
FB:  Look for EXCELLENT hand, high squat and bench numbers
TE:  same as FB
WR:  EXCELLENT hand, obviously, but look at the GPA.  Look for 40 yard times in the 4.4 range and down
OL (all of em):  SQUAT and BENCH are where it's at
DE:  same as OL, but look for someone with speed in the 4.8-5.0 range
DT:  Look for a run stopper, with squat in the 650 range and up
LB: Good hands and up, I recruit speed.  Have one run stopper at least, who cares how slow he is.  More on that later.
CB:  EXCELLENT hands are nice.  But I go for SPEED, SPEED, SPEED
FS/SS:  Hands EXCELLENT, 40 yard times in the mid to low 4's.
Punter:  Dunno.  Never have punted.
Kicker:   Strength EXCELLENT, accuracy EXCELLENT

Now

So far in my dynasty mode, I am 204-0, 15 consecutive national championships, just as many Heisman's, offensive MVP's, RB of the year, etc.

I run the 3-4 and Nickel packages almost exclusively.  4-3 for a team that likes to run.

At all positions, I spend the first week of recruiting feeling out the top players on the Bluechip lists, seeing who wants to play for me.
After that, I go to ALL PROSPECTS and start looking for the above listed criteria for each position.  Doesn't matter to me if the player is a 5 star or what, I have had excellent results using my recruiting methods.
I even beat my son's SUPER TEAM, which had all of it's players at 99 ratings.  Each time we played, which we did at season ONE, season NINE, and season THIRTEEN, I spanked him.
My defenses consistently rank #1 in rushing yards allowed, points allowed, tackles for losses, etc.
Offense is always #1 in all categories, except passing.  I run the ball alot.

If I am way off base, I apologize for butting in.

Oh yeah, almost forgot.
You can move a FS/SS to LB and have an awesomely fast linebacking corps.
That is why I don't pay much attention to the LB recruits.
Also, I go to the options page and build my players up a tad.  I like my FS/SS/LB to be in the 6'4" range and weigh in at 230-255 pounds.

Sorry for rambling.

As a side note:  My DB's don't have to have hands in the EXCELLENT range.  I look for GOOD and AVERAGE.  Interceptions are nice, but mainly, Iwant them to deflect passes and prevent the opposing team from moving the ball.  A high GPA means the DB will be alert and be in position to nail the receiver or deflect the pass almost every time.  It also means that that DB you move up to LB will be a ball hawk and get to the RB almost every time.

I like taking athletes who were QB's then turning them into a receiver or strong safety/free safety. Typically that is for the ones that are the speedster types. Someone like a Michael Vick type from high school who just needs a place to play. They may start out in the dumps with their rating numbers but after sitting out a redshirt season they tend to blossom in the new position.

The thrill for me is to take a school that is an independent that sucks like Florida Atlantic or Florida International and then have them built up enough to be a replacement in the SEC or ACC and then start kicking tail. Sure you loose a few games but I think getting there is 99% of the fun in the game.

Yea, my "best" reciever still can't catch for ****..

His first year:

22 catches for 434 yards, 3 TDs.  13 Drops.

Second year:

46 catches for 718 yards, 9 TDs.  21 Drops.

First game of his third year:

7 catches for 124 yards, 4 drops.

So I've thrown to him 113 times, and he's dropped it 38 of those times.

As near as I can tell, "drops" aren't counted when the DB or safety knocks the crap out of your guy, those are usually counted as deflections.

So do most recievers drop the ball 1/3rd of the time you throw it to them or no?  Seems a little on the absurd side to me..

He is rated an 87 overall,

90 speed, 84 awr, 87 catch, 90 jump.

Just to give a comparison.. and I know this guy doesn't have anywhere near the caches or attempts my reciever does.

Airforce's HB has 34 receptions over 3 years, with 1 drop.  His catch rating is 65.

The WR with the most catches in the NCAA so far (over a career) has 137 catches over 3 years and a couple games.  12 drops.  His catch rating is 85.

Another guy has 104 catches over 2 years and a couple games.. 4 drops.  Catch rating 88.

So either the computers recievers have a MUCH better chance of catching the ball than the human controlled ones do, or I'm seriously doing something wrong.

What is y'alls experience?

It may well be linked to something that we can't control Urchin. Most likely something to do with the way that the computer sees receivers as open or not. I know I have a habit of trying to finesse the ball a little too much at times and then I try to slip it into a double coverage zone or something stupid like that.

Try this site for some of the questions that you guys may have about recruiting and player stats. Also there is a cool thread starting about the speculation on the 2006 version of the game as well.

Who knew way back when this game started as Bill Walsh College Football for the Sega that it would be to the point its at now.

Yea, definately looks like I'm not the only one with trouble passing the ball.
