I have noticed , mayeb its only me, that the animated water looks much better now. But Unfortunately its a big disadvantage to be flying with it on than with the standard still texture water.
When diveing down at the watter its imposible to judge distance, because it turns to one solid colour almost. Cant tell 500 ft from 5 ft. Is this only on my end? Im using A Gforce 6800.
It would be cool if a texture was added to this animated water.
So far it seems that it is only a shader that looks cool when looking out but when looking down... you cant see anything.
Is there a posible fix for this in the near future?
Or is it just a feature that will remain for ever disabled because of the dissadvante it creates.

DOES ANYONE USE ANIMATED WATER??
-
I use animated water.
I also try to remember to use my altimiter to make sure I've got a little space between me and the ground.
Is it tougher to tell than it used to be? yes.
But I don't really think about it. So I didn't answer =)
-
Shaders are going to look a little different from different manufacturers/models of video cards. It all depends on how the vendor has implented shaders.
If you do not like the effect, you can always turn it off.
-
Hey can U guys take a screen shot of waht your watter looks like when diving straight down at it..?
Just want to compare...
I like the way it looks,,,, but yes with it off I dont have to look at my altimiter..... i hardly ever look at it.
And also is there a way if posible to tweak the settings on the video card? to change the apearance of the watter?

I also have a 6800 and have the same problem. Cant judge alt over animated water. Your right though it does look better.
-
BOOOOOOO!
Is there a remedy can it be altered?
dang was looking forward to improved graphics ,,, but this sux if can't use it..
hmmmm... I been trying it in the training area.... you can manage when flyinhg around but when in a furbal and looking around every where,,,, you rely on periferal to see ho low U are...
dangit!
-
not that I have found. I just cut it off. Crashed a few to many times thinking I had alt.
-
The animated water is, probably, still under development.
It is possible with the shader technology to make it look even better than now, especially when it comes to alt/distance judgement.
I think it has alot to do with the lighting. Currently it seems that the water absorbs most of the light, that is why we have a hard time judging our alt. When they get around to improve how the water reflects light, it should get better.
-
I totaly agree with that,
but not to quote anyone,,,, it sounded like AH is doen with the water.... ?
Hope not
Iv also noticed maybe its on my end,,, but the scale of the watter the waves look small,,,, it might help if was tiled less times...
-
I augered on several dogfights over water because I couldn't tell the distance to water anymore.
On radeon 9500 pro and mobility radeon 9700.
-
The animated water we now have is a substantial step forward from the original animated water. Maybe they're "done" with the water, but other technical improvements may, in turn, improve the water.
I'm actually quite impressed with the animated water progress, we got much better water and improved framerates (well, at leat I did).
-
I sure don't, my fps goes from a solid 85 to 8 or less when I turn it on. With my 9700pro it's very ugly unfortunately.
-
SunKing, you have anisotropic filtering enabled? That will kill your frame rate when shaders are used.
-
Hehe, I have 16x aniso enabled, vsync is still the limiting factor.
(geforce 6800 Ultra)
-
OOOH ultra
I got the 6800 non ultra but mine is SLI so I cant wait till i get the twin card :P
in maybe a month or 2,
Hey Jodgi since I have gotten my new system and using th 6800 I have mayjor crashes if i jump to windows. Never had this problem on my old system. It really sux when i hit the windows key by accident and lose a Tempest! But most of all dont like things that make my new (expensive) machine crash.
have u had these problems? if yes have you found a fix?
MonkeyMeat
-
I hope so jodgi. A couple of generations ahead of the 9700Pro there.
-
I have to agree that while looking better than the first animated water attempt, i have switched it off.
It is MUCH easier to judge altitude with a glance without animated water than with.
Diving towards the animated water it looks like a solid colour panel giving you absolutely no depth perception at all.
I have yet to try a boat so it may in fact be great for that, but flying? forget it.
Oh using an X800.

I doubt this is due to the gfx card. I haven't noticed any problems with exiting to desktop and back. I'll try it out and see if that is a problem now (my new system is, well, pretty new ;) so I haven't done alot of alt-tabbing yet).
I'm guessing crashes are more often related to CPU and memory/pagefile issues. Why am I still talking? I don't know much about these rocketscientist thingies.

And I'm so happy about it I just couldn't resist a little bragging :)

Yah it is rocket science to me too.
I have a feelling it is video driver issues.. . . maybe.
are you Usng the standard Nvidia drivers or are you running those Omega drivers that everyones been yaping about?
I downloaded them but didnt instal,,, I'm not sure but I dont think the support the 6800.. . seems like the Nvidia driver postdate any Omega ones..
What do they do (Omega) anyways.
And will they help my video card?
Also Is there anyway to disable teh windows keys on the keyboard?

Omega's current release Nvidia driver is 61.77, and wont support your 6800. The official Nvidia release is 66.97 and supports the 6xxx series cards. There have been quite a few issues with those drivers, but you will have to use them. Zer0point has a "modified" version of the 66 series drivers.
Check out this thread, might help you.

I disable the WIndows key on the keyboard with some hot glue and a small piece of rubber hose. Pop the key off, dollop some hot glue on it, slide the rubber hose over it, then press the key back on after is has set.
No more Windows key problem. :D

i use 6693 drivers from nvidia

Thats funny, I've been using the the Omega 61.77 driver with my 6800 since I got it in November. :)
The nVidia 61.77 driver doesnt support the 6800's but the Omega modified one does.

Ah, my bad. I knew the Nvidia "official release" 61.77 didnt work with the 6xxx cards, and someone else posted the Omega version didnt support their 6600GT. I just assumed the support was the same for both.
-
You know, your right, I looked at the readme and it only says "added support for 6800" it says nothing about the 6600's. Wonder why they left them out? Gotta be a lot of folks with 6600's out there.

Your right, but I can't live without it on. I'll have to pass on the fancy water for now.

Just curious why you need AF enabled? Skuzzy has posted more than once it doesnt work well with AH, or at best does nothing for you in the game. At worst it can cause problems. I've tried it both ways and honestly cant find a real difference, except every so often I get lockups with AF enabled. If you feel you need it so badly, the Nvidia control panel lets you setup a profile for different games. Set up one for AH with your AF disabled, and it will only be disabled when you run AH. Simple.

It improves visual quality noticably, less "noise" in the terrain/textures.
I could drop it in a heartbeat, though, not THAT important.

I have tested a bit, I actually have problems with alt-tabbing now. When I got back from the desktop the visual quality of the terrain was worse and shortly after... bluescreen and insta-reboot. Maybe it is the new card/drivers?
I haven't tried the Omega drivers on my new card, I use the latest official nvidia drivers.
