A friend wants to buy one of those new 23" LCD monitors for use with Aces High, but it has a different aspect ratio than AH uses (It is wider than normal, to accomodate letterbox movies). Has anyone used a monitor with this shape with Aces High? Do you get black blank areas on the sides to allow the normal aspect ratio? Currous minds await your input.

I think AH does not stretch the image, but instead adds more viewing space.
You'll have to edit the .ini file to suit the new custom resolution. Piece of cake.

This is a Yak9u stretched to fit my 1280x768 desktop running AH at 1024x768. My monitor allows me to use the normal mode with the black sidebars and no stretching using the VGA input (it is not allowed with the DVI input) so this is a function of the monitor rather than AH. I prefer the much larger picture with the stretching. I tried my monitors native res of 1280x720 and 1280x768 by editing the vid config file. It does not stretch and provides a wider view, HOWEVER; it also loses vertical real estate. IE I can't see the bottom row of cockpit guages. See second post below for examples. So, for gameplay reasons and filling my bigscreen, I use the stretch mode and I am used to it now.

Here is a shot of the Yak with vid config edited to 1280x768 to match the desktop. No stretching but you can't see over the windscreen frame or see the cannon counter or other instruments below. I die enough without limiting my front/up view.

Here is same Yak with black bars @1024x768. No stretching or vertical real estate loss but I bought a bigscreen for a big picture. :D

I've been using 1400x1050 on my laptop 15" widescreen (Radeon 9700 mobility, AMD64 Mobile 3200+). Frame rates are not as high as with 1280x1024 but the view is much better with the native resolution (which is 1400x1050) of this screen. No big hit on FPS plus a wider view.
I haven't noticed any problems using a different aspect ratio after editing the video*.cfg in the settings folder (video8.cfg?) in which I just set the resolution to desired after booting AH2 once to get proper data on the vidcard... After that I set the sliders in AH to get good frames.
edited later for some speeelling.

Thanks for the helpful feedback. I am most curious what our options will be a few years from now.

I notice you still have your crt tv next to that big wonderful widescreen, what gives ditch that thing...
That looks like a nice hometheater setup. Do you use your pc as hometheater pc I am leaning towards doing a similar set up.

Naw, the 27" stays. When I get up in the AM, I fire up the PC, Panny and the 27". I sit down in my massage recliner and drink my coffee while I watch the news on the 27" and read email, internet news, etc on the bigscreen. I don't need to use the PIP with the 27" there. DVDs do look awesome through the Plextor 712A in the PC but it is more convenient to use the Sony in the home theatre setup and I really can't see any difference in quality. Plus, I have a Home Theatre Master Univeral Remote that controls everything including the lights and air conditioning. I do play my MP3 files through the PC and Home theatre system, also. Time Warner cable provides a free High Definition cable tuner with compnent outputs and digital audio output which also provides my FM channels and prerecorded commercial-free music.
