Title: When the Internet comes out and touches your real life.
Post by: Nash on January 29, 2005, 08:53:38 PM
A post here today just made me think about something, and wonder. How many of you have had your real actual physical lives touched by the internet?

Here's a few I can think of:

I was a CM and there was some trouble with a scenario (I forget what, exactly). Daddog, the head CM calls me at home... but I'm totally shrecking HIGH when it happens. The conversation seemed to last an hour, and consisted of me trying to have him not worry, and convince him that everything would work out. But again, I was totally shrecking high. I have no idea how it came off. (Sorry Daddog!)

Next one... Yer gonna laff...

When I first got jacked into the internet, it was via AOL circa 1995. I went kinda bat5hit. I would spend too much time goofin' in the chat things. It was a fun new way to communicate. Then this chick wants to call me. Okay fine. Then she calls again. And again. And again. Then one day I get home from work and there's a package. She had sent me a pair of drumsticks with my name engraved on them. I go online, she's there, and she tells me she just bought a plane ticket to New York, would be there by the weekend.

I didn't type a single thing to her ever again after seeing that one sentence appear on my screen. Don't know if she ever came, or what.

Another was when Pyro called me at work during a meeting.

Funked, the designated side CO for some big scenario, blew a sort of hissy-fit - can't remember why - and quit. And it was well into the planning phase.

There's maybe only 5-6 people at this meeting.

"Yeah, that's okay, I can take the call."

"Oh hey Pyro" (he said "This is Pyro").

"Funked, yeah, he is gone - but it's okay."

"Well no, no.... I wouldn't say that. A bit of an exageration. It'll settle down."

The rest of the conversation revolved around some form of BS internet psychology and momentum. Lolz. I forgot I was even in the room. The look on those guys' faces when I put down the phone....

I did meet one quadmate in real life and he was really a great guy, so it's not all nightmares.

But okay... Besides meeting squadmates or the cons, or internet shopping etc., has the internet ever stepped out of the monitor at ya?

dont want to derail this, but..

Before the internet I get this chick tellemarketer call me at home....back when I would actually answer the phone.

She's trying to sell family portraits.....I told her I had a badly difigured head, but would be interested is she could somehow do the portait and make it fit as the backdrop to my fishtank. She laughed

Anyway, told her where I worked.

She shows up 3 days later with a kid and the mess that was her life and.....well, was very sad situation.

i think the time i went and met up with dinger, funked, fdski, and the rest of the 308th in Dayton was the first time i'd actually met people I had only ever seen online.

Had a friendship with a girl for the longest time on the net and finally met her, and she was pretty neat... until i helped her drive from minneapolis to la and she was a total psycho. Learned my lesson there!

Well, I'm Tubgirl so I'm pretty sure we all know how the internet has touched my life.  I'll never forgive my ex-boyfriend (known here as Nuke) for publishing that picture.  It was a very private thing for our first anniversary.

I started doin the AOL thing when i was 18.  I met these two girls...both pretty good looking....anyhow went over to their apartment and my butt whole has never been the same....JK....actually they freaked me out cause they were into wicca like hard core.  I moved in with them cause I wanted out of the barraks and they needed a roomate.   Well ages 21 and 18 (them) turned out to be 18 and 15....the 18 year old happend to have a husband (also a Marine) who was on deployment....yea that went well   (side note the 15 y/o was pregnent 4 months later by a guy I know....he's still in prison I think....

Second time I met a girl she was a hottie southern belle from Mississippi.  She and a bunch of her hottie friends did a spring break trip to mexico and made a side trip to come see me.  Didn't close the deal on that one but oh it was fun.

I met a third chick on the internet....she was about to go to boot camp in a couple of weeks and asked me a bunch of questions about it.  I talked to her for a couple of years till she made a road trip to see her brother in 29 palms.  She made a detour to see me....a night I wont forget.  I only lost contact with her after I got married.

I've only really met one guy from here in real life (it was AW actually) he was a squadmate.  I was on my way back to arizona from nebraska and remembered he was doing recruiting duty in colorado springs.  Pretty cool guy I called him up first from a pay phone then stopped by the RSS.  He offered to let me stay with him and his wife for the night but I had about 500 more miles to drive that day.

that's about it for internet to real life encounters.

I've met quite a few people IRL, not counting the AW Con in '99, some from here; Oopsy (you guys know him as Shane, he's actually pretty cool & laid back IRL), Drano, Oldman, and some others; and my car club started as a bunch of guys and girls on the internet who noticed that we were all from the same area.

The strangest one, though, was at a now defunct forum called Oscarfish.com. It was one of those threads that was named "Where are you?"

I said I was from Mountain Top. Another guy I knew wrote, "oh, I'm from Mt Top, too." I said, Fairview Twp; Oh, yeah, Fairview Twp!

Spruce St... Spruce St! 124... 128! I'm the guy with the brindle bulldog... LOL, I'm the guy you were talking to earlier today as he walked his St Bernard....

He's a good guy, has a cool dog & some nice fish, works booking travel for  entertainers.

Like Mosca, for me it's mostly been meeting people in real life. Not counting the 98 Con, I've met quite a few folks.

The only O-Club folks I've met are Montezuma (-MZ-), and Midnight Tahgut. I used to live in the same town as Sandman, and he even used to work on the same Contract as my wife, but our paths never crossed.

Tahgut and I get together once or twice a year when he's in town. What I always find funny is trying to figure out what to call people, since you get to know them by their handle, putting a new name to the personality is sometimes tough. I'm sure I called MZ "Monty" a few times when we were hanging out this summer.

Hmmm... Maybe we're going to have to set up a DC mini-con... or at least a night of drinking at the Brickskeller or something.

First time I met up on-line personas about 4 years ago. At SimHQ someone posted topic about meeting simmers at local museum. Carl and Matt from UBI came and three or five people showed up.  We had lunch together with long discussion about IL2 and games in general. Then we got a free copy of SH2 and invitation to beta test IL2-FB.

Later on someone from SimHQ wanted to have LAN in museum. 4 people showed up from WarBirds message board and IL2 players from SimHQ. We played couple rounds of IL2 (original). Guys were cool and I got to see different playing styles.

Another time bunch of people from WW2OL got a paintball meeting. 10 people showed up and we spend 4 hours shooting each other. Then we had lunch together chatting about game. I had great time.

Edit: During last trip to Russia I met couple people from St Petersburg (from Sukoy forum). They took me to their AeroClub and I got to fly Yak52. That was awesome!
:D

So far I never had bad experience....

One time, this dipwad who used to always come in and bug the watermelon out of me at ThrustMaster about getting support in Windows NT 4.0 turned up here in AH and started bugging me.  I still talk to that guy every now and then just to keep him from stalking me.  BTW...I know that was you at my bathroom window the other night, Mini!

Another time, I met up with a Croatian terrorist after he was denied entry at the Canuckian border.  Apparently, he was on his way to sex up some artist-type guy in Vancouver and the border guard figured out what he was up to.

I've made friends all over the planet because of internet.

I have had discussions with some of the most notorious hackers to date because of internet.

I've had discussions with some of the most notorious losers because of it too.

I used to chat a lot in IRC. I knew and met quite a few people internationally, in real life. All the meetings were absolutely great.

Then one day I'm helping people in irchelp. A girl comes in and asks help, I help. We start chatting and exchange photos. She's gorgeous.

A few months later I'm in an aeroplane flying 3000km to meet her. We are happily married with 2 children.

Did it affect my life? You bet it did.

I can see the plethora of internet experiences so i'll take a stab at this one.

Started on the net early 90's on SIMNET which played CYAK and Hornet on the MAC - ran into Drex for the first time with that.

Did online ATC on the MSN Zone, then Eskyworld, then Westcoast ATC - got one of my students from the Zone who i'm hella tight with till this day.

Aces High boys - met Howitzer since he lived in the same town at my University. Ran into Shawk whenever I passed through Dayton Ohio. Dukemskt was my boss before this and we built Aces High based flight sims together along with a few other notables. I met my current boss that I moved out to the west coast for Urabus - and Hylander now works for us.

THE RUSSIAN CREW:

The only important woman that i've come across in my life has been Eva from the far east of Russia. Talking for about a year - her younger sister Helen came critically ill with scholiosis - 30 * curve, so we got her the operation and for the first time in 12 years she can feel her entire back while she lays in bed. Flew out to the amur in September - been together ever since.

Met up with Boroda and Estel in Moscow, first in September then for celebrating this past new years 2004/2005 with them and Eva. I have never been drunker in my life nor have I had such great company.

Boroda and Estel - I love you guys. You are fantastic!

The full russian Aces High story (http://members.aol.com/wolfala/russia/journal.pdf)

P.S.  The first 5 pages of the PDF deals DIRECTLY with the relationships we are discussing - the lack of face to face contact - but everything else being normal.

Lesse. Once long ago I met a girl at a I-hop that I had known off and on for a few years online. She was in the 30-something chat rooms I frequented (before I found out about online flight sims).  Some of the people from our little chat group actually hooked up and all that, but I was married. A few years later when I was divorced I agreed to meet with her. She was short fat and ugly with a kid. I was polite, ate dinner talked about old times for about 20 minutes and left, never to hear from her again. Boring huh.

I've had lunch with Hblair a few times. Had 3 little bellybutton cons at my house. Zigrat,Bigmax,Shadomy, hblair, regurge destroyed some beer and all that.

While taking a class in OK, had lunch and acm discussions with Drex. Destroyed a few beers and snot crackers. Drove down to Grapevine and went flying RC planes with HT and a fella from the Dickweed HBG. Met Pyro.

Went to Bigmax's house down on the gulfcoast and hit the casino's. Drove with Moose from here to AHconIII (so he wouldnt get lost in Texas again).

The AHcon was the strangest. Way to much to take in. Urchin in his bear suit.  FDB's and FDB groupies. Akcurly's son AKnimitz bouncing Urchins head on the concrete like a basket ball.
Violating the blow up sheep doll. Watching Loser take a poke at Pyro. The 3 linebackers Funked, Pei and Sling. Wandering around the parking lot at 3am looking for Loser who had ditched this girl that drove down with him from Canada who I think thought she was his grilfreind but who he thought was a ride buddy  who didn't have a key to the room they  were sharing whilst he was bonking the bar chick somewhere in Texas. We thought he would be in the parking lot and as the ride buddy was histerical we were trying to get her a key. Meeting Lazs, Rude and some of the othere 13th. (not that Lazs is 13th, but just that it was funny meeting them at the same time, Lazs and Rude that is. They kinda circled for a bit eyeing each other wondering if the other was going to bite, Rude finally decides to take the bull by the horns and jumps in there with the hand shake thinking that maybe Lazs cant shoot as well with his left hand...etc etc etc. LOL)

And the perpetual...your an Assassin? WHere the F*** is hblair? repeatedly ad nauseam....

Speaking of nauseam, first night at that con I ate a bad bluecheese burger and washed it down with many big gargantuan mugs that you would make good salt water aquarium starter tanks of local brewed beer. I did the throne room flip-around for about 12 hours and wasn't right for a week!

Of course, to start the con off right...About 30 minutes before Moose showed up, I was showered and shaved, packed and ready for the road when it started raining. I had this wheel barrow full of dirt in the yard and knowing my wife, knew she would attempt to dump it before I got back. Her having bad hands/wrists and all I had to dump it before I left. It being raining, I took off with it at a run heading for the 12 foot cliff over the ditch. Calculating that I would need to flip it within a foot or two of the edge of the cliff to get it to clear I speed up a bit so I could flip it early. Well, as I flipped, hoping to stick the front end in the dirt and eject the now mud over the edge, I miscalculated and all I did was speed the dam thing up. Nothing stuck, the dam thing went flying off the end of the cliff, me attached at the hands and to shocked/stupid to realize I should LET GO. I ended up head down in a full ditch with my knees jammed in my ears and a big stob of brush jammed in my back near my kidneys. The ditch was a favorite place for me to dump stuff, like unused concrete, brush...etc. I actually thought that I might drown if I lived through the crash at the bottom. Moose showed up about 30 minutes later, thankfully after I quit crying like a baby...j/k.

So, between the mudbath stob stuck in my back bluecheese-o-death burger, loser/tyson, beelzebubbles, viloted blow up sheep, FDB's, and Urchin going for a swim at 4am in his underoos, the AHconIII was by FAR and AWAY my most memorable online related event. EVAR.

I used to hang out in a local Undernet chatroom. We had GTG's every couple of month's and a yearly trip to Galveston. Still see one of the girls from there off and on.

I've met a couple guys from AH. Sandman when he was in Dallas and Beagle (one of my squadmate's) when I made a trip to Houston. Both were really nice guys in person.

made some friendships that have lasted for years from AH with regular visits.

Took beetle and tomato shooting handguns.   Met a lot of guys at cons.

current girlfriend was off of a joke "match dot com" add I placed.

met a lot of Hot Rod guys and still visit them... at the con before last one of em showed up in a really nasty chevy powered Healy and we went to a meet with all the Dallas Hot Rod guys.

I believe that I have met over a hundred people I now know that were once only print on the internet.

Once there was this uber troll who got wwII airplane computer game enthusiasts to send him money to fund a fictitious developing flight sim.

That's the height of trolldom. Causing the readers of your troll to act in the physical world and actually profit from it.

Hehe, this thread rocks.

I remember that scenerio and funked's rather large I QUIT!!!!! post.  Was this the first of its kind? :D

Seems like forever and a half ago..

I began frequenting local dial up BBS's around Milwaukee with my kick bellybutton 9600 baud modem... in 1994 I think.  Major Mud, L.O.R.D, Trade Wars, and other dorky text based RPGs were the order of the day.  A few local guys I got to know would setup LAN parties every once and a while.  We'd play Command & Conquer, Duke Nukem 3D, and Mech Warrior.

Did the whole AOL chat room thing for a while.  Got boring, moved on to pr0n.

In between it all I squeezed in Air Warrior when it was introduced by AOL.       When that died, I was lost.  I finally ditched the 486 in 1998 and went nuts with my blazing 400 celery and Riva TNT graphics blaster.  :)

Found Aces High in late 99, early 2000.  I roomed with Curval and met a bunch of other tards at the 2003 Con in Indianapolis.  The first time I met Loser, he flipped me off :)

Indy was the first time I met any "internet people" - local BBS's didn't count. :)

Teh intardnet has had a pretty big impact on me so far.

Is there a con this year?  I have to do a week of training in Dallas, and maybe I can synch the two.

1995, the first local I-net provider started, i moved from the daily
BBS calls to the unknown internet. Was then 3 month non-stop online, lost on IRC.
I then woke up back to reality when the first i-net bill came,
it was aprox €2000.
Yeah i think it touched my real life that moment very nice heh.
But it payed off, 1 month later i meet my ex online and we where
togheter for 5 great years.

Sikboy makes a mean chicken ..er...thing, and had pretty good scotch too. He did have funny looking squirrels in his front yard though.

Rude, Stringer and ygsmilo met me in KC and got me drunk and high on BBQ. I think they had their way with me, but I don't recall.

Sandman, Airhead & the Mrs. Airhead, Funkypants, Meitla, Ramzey, Jigsaw... (I'm sure I'm forgetting somebody) met up at the Chino Airshow. I got out with my virginity intact that time, but it was a struggle.

mechanic... if you are in the area... write me... we can shoot pretty much whatever you like.   I have a fair selection and lots of ammo and.... it's still a free country with some choices left.

The con was fun... hoollign got there first and told about a dozen of my BB "fans" that I was coming and that I was a fat little guy about 5'2" tall and out of shape.   They all met me at the lobby door.  I think he even passed out pitchforks and torches or else the hotel did.... not sure about that.

WB was where I met a lot of the guys I still see from time to time.

That sounds like fun. How about all 3 meeting at Yolo shooting range? I got plenty of ammo for my guns.

while i was still new to AH, i participated in a memorial flight for a fallen pilot  who, though i had only a brief chance to meet him, i remember very clearly.

we cut a few jokes.  he taught me a thing or two about how to come back to land...

that memorial flight was one of the most beautiful, fascinating  and surreal events that i have ever had the pleasure to participate in.

i found myself marveling at the actuallity that was so easilly tranferred to a simulated world.  the sadness for a man that id never seen eye to eye.  i remember telling people about it, about the distance i had crossed...about the thing that i had witnessed.  they looked at me as though i was strange...but i knew better...i knew that it was something real and tangible and honest.  something that i rarely see in the day to day...

it is that brief journey that i will never forget, and it is one of the main reasons that i have stayed.

brotherhood.

SEpilot.  may your skies remain forever blue.

I "met" a local chick in Yahoo chat once.  She came over.  We hit it.  Was fun.  One night stand.  I don't think her husband ever found out.     (I didn't know she was married)

That's the last time I'll ever let that happen again, though.

It were supposed to be a surprise but ... ohh well..  never mind i will kick your balls next time.

However when we did play Diablo 1,  i meet like 3 ppl in real. 1 of them bought 5 computers from me, second was his girlfriend, that time she were just zero, but today she work in top management of mobile telecomunication company.
Thrid guy had a lot of new games, so i sometime meet him to get some of them. it were in mid 90s.  Later when i served at university instead of my millitary duty, i found that one of my colegues from university is friend with the boy who were burning CDs for me.

One day i got mad idea, that we could go and gang bang our AH squad leader, Mr. tresky plesky Airmessovsky. So i packed 2 pairs of underwear, Mbirdcz and we went to Italy by car. We did stay there for 2 days, then we went to Swiss.... We meet mr. Airmess and had a great time with him. he is cool guy. however im not sure what time he had with us, coz when we were leaving, he gave me some 2.5Kg of cookies :D

No i spoted that Nexx is living right next to us in Germany, so i playing with idea to visit him with Mbirdcz.

We also invited some of our squad mates to the Czech, but non of them had balls to come yet...  they simply fear those 3rd world countries :D

oohhhh.. and i meet something like 3 Iranians trough internet whitch i meet in real as well. We still friends for past 3 years.

russian... email me and we can go shooting at yolo if you want.  I need to get back there and renew my membership anyway.  I like to take off during the week to shoot there so that there isn't a crowd.

Saw pulled the same with me...and I'm in a different continent than him.  I told him, "Uhhh...I think I'm moving to Kentucky that weekend."  ;)   Unfortunately, Saw knew where that was...
