Title: New Plane Sounds
Post by: CptTrips on February 05, 2000, 03:29:00 PM
I have been working on new sounds for the current plane set.  I'm not saying these are better, just different.  I do think they're better for the bombers and goonies tho, so they don't sound like a p51.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

You can find them at:
 http://www.digitalsim.com/downloads/Aces_High_Sounds/ (http://www.digitalsim.com/downloads/Aces_High_Sounds/)

When you extract them they want to goto "Program FIles/HTC/Aces High/Sounds/{plane}"  where plane is the specific plane directory.  So its easiest to extract to you root directory so it gets the path right if you use winzips "use folder info" option.  Otherwise manually copy the sound to the correct folder per plane.

Note:  The C47a sound set contains a modified version of drop.wav but it doesn't get recognized unless its under the base sound dir. (sounds like a bug to me)  So after installing the C47a set manually copy the new drop.wav to the base sounds dir.

Some of these turned out better than others.  I was using the Universal Studios Sound Effect Library (5 CD set).  Some I was able to find accurate source, for but most I had to exercise liberal artistic license.  These are just how I liked them to sound and claim no historical accuracy.  Also, how they are balenced for my speaker system might not be as good for everyone else.

If I get good feedback I can continue to tweak these.

Regards,
Wab

If anybody is interested in putting together their sound packs for distribution, I'd be happy to make an installer for it and put the packs up on our download page under your name.

Cool!  I'll submit mine after some tweaking.  Pyro, any thoughts on what needs tweaking in my set please share.  I'm interested in the feedback.  A lot of these planes I have no idea what they sound like so was just guessing.  Also my sound resources were limited so required starting with a totally different aircraft and playing with pitch and timber.  Most of it was simply based on the "uhhh that sounds cool. huhhh huhhhuh  huhhuhh..."  method.

I've already gotten some great input from people like Rocket and others.

I've tweaked a few of the zip this evening:

ah_p51d.zip
(engine redone)
--------------------------------------

ah_f4u1c.zip
added BANG for cartridge starter and engine redone for bigger ballz)

ah_f4u1d.zip

--------------------------------------

ah_C47a.zip
(minor changes.  decrease gear volume and pitch.)

--------------------------------------

ah_190a8.zip

(engine redone for bigger ballz)

Any more comments or suggestions are welcome.

After adding the cartridge starter I was told by someone else that perhaps it was only the early models that had that and the later had electric starters.  The question is how early.

Can anyone tell me if both the 1c and 1d had electric starters or was the 1d old enough to have cartridge?

Too bad if true I kinda like it now.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

AK, your sounds for the .205 engine have some major problems  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif) The engine has a major oscillation problem, sounds like it's racing up and down (Compared to the excellent slight volume changes the F4U got) and the RPM is far slower than it should be, the motor sounds like it is detonating when it has seperated individual bangs at full throttle.

Also, is it possible the La5 could get a sound closer to the F4u? They both had 14 cylinder radials.

If your in range, so is the enemy.

>AK, your sounds for the .205 engine have >some major problems  The engine has a major
>oscillation problem,

Yeah its tough to get a good looping engine sample as most of my resources are flybys so I'm fighting doppler problems, but I'll play with it this weekend.

I was concerned about my 109 sounds but I loaded MSCFS and it sounded very similar for their 109's. :>  I don't know if thats a good reference or not.  I have EAW and SDOE on cd I might load them and listen to theirs.

>Also, is it possible the La5 could get a >sound closer to the F4u? They both had 14 >cylinder radials.

OK I play with that too.  But didn't the F4U have 18 cylinders?

Thanks for the input.  I need the help from the community because I don't know enough about the aircraft.

Wab

OK I fiddled with the 205 and la5.

In addition I redid all the 109 engines to make them less "lawn-mowerish".  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)  While I was in there I redid the nik engine too and fixed the f4u1d (made its engine the same as 1c)  Also made one last attempt at cleaning up the b17 engine.

I put up the changed zips:
109f4
10009g6
109g2
109g10
n1k2
b17
f4u1d
la5fn
c205

Also, Pyro, or who ever else is interested; I packed everything up in a single self-extracting exe with setup program. (7.5meg)

Ak, haven't d/l'd yet but about the La5, the problem was that the La-5 sounded a little high pitched, F4u had t good deep drone in comparison, I think both had 14 cylinders no? In any case F4u, 190 and La5-fn should only vary in intensity when running.

Ahhh man I suck.

There are 2 versions of the self-extracting program.  The one I ran took me through the gui to create the exe and at the end prompted me if I wanted to test it so I did and it worked ok.  After I even manually ran it from the file manager, worked ok.  What I neglected to do was copy it from the directory it was created in (which had all my other setup stuff) and try it.  When I did that I got your error.  Fudge.  So I just created another one with the other version of the program (winzipse.exe vs wzip32.exe) and this one works better.  {SHRUG} I guess  theere must be some difference between those I'm not aware of.  This new one seems ok even if I copy it to another dir.

I'm uploading it but I'm going to get a squadie to test it for me so hold off.  You can give it a try if you have a fast connect and don't mind till I verify.  Or you can download the plain old zip for each plane individually.  They're up there still.

Sorry for the inconvienience.  I realize for some people a 7 meg download is not trivial.

If you've already done the download, try what Udie said.  It looks like when it fails to run the startup.exe it leaves its under the windows/temp dir.  So you should be able to run it manually still.

Otherwise, wait to download until I can verify this new exe works on someone elses computer other than my machine.

I've got a cable modem connection, and a decent connect to about anywhere, but I can't get that file.  It keeps timing out on me and is very slow.

Can somebody put it someplace with a better connection?  If I can get the damned thing I'll slap it up on my ftp site and link it on my web page, but I just can't get my hands on it.  It keeps timing out.  If anybody can give me an alternate site for it, I would appreciate it.

Lephty,

Sorry bud.  I can't vouch for my webhost.  I might be pushing their download limit.  It would be nice if HTC or someone with more pipe could host the file for me.  I'd hate to get a bill from my webhost for the amount of download I went over my limit.  Not even sure what my limit is.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Robert,

I recommend "Goldwave" as an inexpensive sound editing util.  I have found it excellent and well worth the registration.  My samples were taken off a Movie studio sound effects library cd.  So they were pretty pure, high quality sample (at least before I got ahold of them. ;> ).  I'm not really sure how you'd separate the sound channel out of an avi, but I imagine it can be done.

Wab

TT,

Sorry bud, wish I knew how.  I had some great "power-dive" samples but the way AH is written the diff throttle settings are merely frequencies of the base engine sound.  So thats down in the code not in the samples.

Maybe if they added a new sound for overspeed like they have for the stress groan.  Blend it in and out.

Westy,

Just delete or rename the stall.wav sound in the plane directories.  Then it will use the original stall sound that AH shipped with.  You can also copy over it from the base sounds directory, that will do the trick as well.

>Thanks Lephturn! I was flopping all over >the skies last night.

hehhe.  It was just the oppisite for me.  I had originally changed the stall sound to not even a buzzer but a low rumbling, buffetting sound or air turbulence.  But I found that I was not noticing the onset of stall until I was too deep in.  I found for me I like it loud and annoying so I can hear RIGHT as I start entering that zone.  But to each their own.  When I do the next one when new vehicles come out I might just make 5-6 different stall warning and let people choose which.

Which raises a question I've always had.  Which is you optimal lift/turn zone.  Right before the stall sound starts;at the begining of the stall sound but not too deep; or at the peak of the stall sound right before departure?

And now that I'm done pestering HTC with my sound antics,  I'm ready for the terrain editor. :>

Wab

Hey Wab
I'm finally getting around to downloading and trying out your sounds.  I've already got a suggestion though.  Create a folder w/ the plane name on the root of your harddrive, copy the wavs there, then create the zip file from there.  Then have your readme tell people to extract to thier AcesHigh\sounds folder using folder names to create the proper folder for the aircraft.

Not everyone installs to the default location =)

You're right Cave.  Thats why I created the self-extracting setup program that lets you browse to your base Aces High directory where ever that is.

You must have grabbed the indvidual zips off my site not the installer.  HTC (and Dogfighter.com)is now hosting the installer that should do what you want.

Read this first:

README (http://www.hitechcreations.com/misc/AKWReadme.txt)

And heres the installer...

  INSTALLER  (http://www.hitechcreations.com/misc/AKWSounds.exe)

or

DOGFIGHTER.COM (http://www.dogfighter.com/downloads/index.php3?title=Aces%20High)

But you're right, people need to be able to browse to their installation.

Regards,
Wab

BTW,  I've deleted everything off my site so people will have to get the right one from now on.  Thanks for making remember to do that.

Wabbit,

I find that how deep in the stall horn kinda depends, but definately in the horn a small amount I find.  Basically if you do some testing offline you can work this out.  Just get down on the deck and get some circles going at stall speed.  You can watch your nose move as you increase the stall horn, and you will notice that before you stall, the plane will usually mush and lose turn performance.  Be sure to test this by timing 360 degree turns with varying amounts of stall horn wailing so you get a feel for the right amount of stall.  Also, remember that this only counts at low speed and in sustained turning.  You can pull harder for a short period of time if your speed is higher or you only need to turn 30 degrees.  Use that to get the kill.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

The spitfire sounds like a real snarling beast. Nice job!
