Title: Can/will someone tell me...
Post by: slimm50 on February 02, 2005, 12:03:31 PM
...why the flaps on planes in AH retract by themselves when certain speeds are exceeded? Did they do that irl? And how did the automatic flaps on the N1K work, irl?

Thanks for yore support.:)

No, they did not.

HTC decided to either have the flaps destroyed at the speed rated in the pilot's handbook or have the retract.  They opted for having them retract as it allows pilots to use the flaps but does not allow the gameyness of flapfests like Il-2.

The N1K's combat flaps worked via a mercury switch that determined the angle of attack.  I'm not sure how it worked exactly though.

Karnak,

Curious as to why you mention "gamyness flapfests likeIl-2"?
You drop flaps but they break and will no longer retract, or if you go past the rated speed with them down they also break and no longer will move. It may give you a initial turn advantage but surely you pay for it in being unable to extend from a fight. It doesnt seem anymore "gamey" than having the system manage them for a player, to me.

if in flight you 'break' the flaps they don't stay extended.  Airflow over them causes them to blow to trail...meaning they just retract.

I've had one flap snap back up thanks to a broken cable in a C-172.  Was on a real high final with my usual 20º of flaps like 99% of landings, thought I was too high and added in 30 to make the second turnoff.  As soon as the motor started, a nice loud BANG.  Didn't take a rocket scientest to figure out what happened thanks to the a hefty roll to the right.  Retracted the flaps, went around and landed no flaps.

I wasn't exceeding any speeds either, was at 70kts when I put in the extra 10 degrees and showing 4 whites on the PAPI.

i think that in il-2 you can lower and raise flaps after vfe (max flap operating speed) with minimal penalty. basically like a speed brake

Golfer I hear ya, .Had it happen to me but instead of retracting it got bound up on one side and stuck. luckily it was on landing.

JimBear,

What I mean is that the people who keep requesting that flaps not autoretract want that change so that they can use the flaps in an ahistorical manner.  How do you think it would be handled in WWII if a P-38 pilot returned from 75+% of his missions that saw combat with broken flaps because he was using them outside of their rated tolerances?  There is no such penalty in AH and people just want to squeeze every advantage they can, regardless of how realistic it is.

Autoretracting flaps are not realistic, but the combat methods their existance in AH forces are more realistic than without.

Then again... how often would a WW2 P38 pilot get into a live-fire dogfight against a Spitfire?

I think for the most part it is because, unlike a WWII p38 pilot, I do not know the speed limitations of the flap settings.  So when I hit the flap button and they break off... I'm gonna be mad and come to the BBS and whine my head off till HTC fixes it (please see: ENY limiter, fuel porking, bomb calibration, etc)   :D

Why bother?  He is obviously unable to grasp what we've been saying, so it's just basically a waste of our time.  It gets old trying to explain something to someone that has the comprehension of a brick wall.

HT,

Please make the flaps break when you deploy them in an overspeed situation.  Please make them retract when broken.

But when you do, please PAINT A LITTLE WHITE ARC ON THE AIRSPEED DIAL...

Thank you,

mako

Ack-Ack,

I understand your position(s).  It is simply that you cannot see somebody understanding it, and yet concluding that it is the wrong one.
