Title: I saw something wicked cool today
Post by: Stang on February 02, 2005, 06:20:50 PM
As I was in the midst of shooting a billion and mission my first cut as a professional, the only reprieve the Golf Gods granted me was to see a beautiful B-17G take off from the airfield next to the course and fly right over my head.  It's markings looked very similar to one we have from our skinners, its body was unpainted aluminum and the only discernable marking I could see was a blue diagonal stripe on its tail.  Does anyone know which of the remaining B-17's this is?  It lifted off from Mesa, AZ (suburb of Phoenix) around 3:45pm today.

Stang,

Not to hijack this thread as I see you prolly got your answer....

What tour are you playing..What kind of equipment are you using. I am just asking as I wonder what tastes we have in clubs and stuff.:)

I'm playing on the Gateway Tour out in Phoenix.  It just started up this week and runs until the last week in April.

My equipment is ironically the biggest issue in my game lol.  Here's how it breaks down:

Driver:  Titleist 983E 7.5deg loft, Pro-Force Tip Stiff 335, X Flex
3Wood:  Acer 18deg, S300 steel shaft
Irons:  Mizuno MP-29's, 1, 3-PW (the Knife is the sh*t  :D  ) X100 shafts
Wedges:  Cobra Phil Rodgers 56 (bent to 54deg), Cleveland Reg. 588 60deg
Putter:  Scotty Cameron Pro Platinum Laguna 2.5

HAHAHA a golf tour...whats that a gentleman's club of guys all wearing funny pants?!  LOL!!!

Nice stuff.

Driver: Cleveland Launcher 400 8.5 Stiff Fujikura
3wood: 13 Degree Cleveland Lanucher Stiff Fujikura
3-PW Cleveland TA2 Micro Cavity
http://www.clevelandgolf.com/proshop/irons/ta2.php
Wedges: Cleveland 53* and 56* series 588's Chrome
Odessy white Hot 2 Ball blade ext 1 inch.
Precept U-Tri Golf Ball

I'm thinking about getting a couple rescue/hybrid clubs. I went to a local golf Store here (Golf Smith) and hit a few balls with the 21* Sonartec Hybrid. That thing is pretty dang hot.

Thought I may give em a try to see if they may help a bit. My long Irons I cant seem to get the trajectory I used to have. Swing flaw prolly but my old teacher is now in Cali. so a leson is sort of out from him.

Bruce Litzke was in own a few days ago. Think he is working on something with GolfSmith. so the rumor mill goes.

Thanks for the info.

7.5 degree loft on the driver?  I can't hit anything above my head at less than 8.5! Then again, I'm lucky to break 80 so that may explain a little. :D

I've been to the driving range a couple times. Last year I hit a ball and it bounced off of the wall thingy next to me and almost hit me in the face! WTF?!

My Par is 19.5 under the cut outside of the green but my handycap, the 45.7 shes a beauty and over the traps outside of the bar Im DANGER!!!

I've got some nice clubs too. Shovle wedge 2000 is my favorite. Then my 16 wood. Oh yes, the 13 Wood. I've got it corked and stuff. Tapped up real nice. Hits great with a small curve/cut/slice 80 degrees to port.

"Cleveland golf clubs, because something about the city of Cleveland can't suck"

Anyways...

I just 'moved up' and retired my Callaway Great Big Bertha.  8º of ball launching perfection built into an eye pleasing clubhead with lines like that of the spitfire.

I'm using a Taylor Made R5-80.  Went with a 8.5 loft for mucho carry and it doesn't seem to produce too much spin.  Definately less than the lower lofted Callaway.  Well, the golf show didn't have anything lower either...lol.

Titleist 975F 14.5º 3ish wood
Callaway Heaven Wood
Titleist 962 Irons, 3-PW
Titleist Vokey 56º SW
Cleveland 588 60º LW
Odyssey WhiteHot #1 putter (Bobby Jones #2 still in the basement though)

Stang, I'm not bringing my whackin' sticks to Vegas so I'll be renting or using a demo set.  Right now May 10th looks best (or only) day I'll be able to do something recreational, my flight doesn't leave until 11:45pm.  Maybe we could golf 'n gamble :)

email me here (nemypoo@aol.com) when you know what your schedule is like.  I'll also shoot ya off my cell number.

Dude I hit it so high I was having a hell of a time keeping it under the wind today and not ballooning it.

RT, unless you can rip a 3 iron with a nice high ball flight then the hybrid is the way to go.  Those things are sweet, it's so much easier to hit the longer shots and you'll be a lot more consistent with them.  I can't use them because I hit them too high but of the ones I've seen Taylor Made seems to have the best.  Something in the 18-21 degree if you can hit it fairly long, maybe up to 24 degrees if you want it to be more forgiving.

And btw RT, wtf, are you sponsored by Cleveland?  lol

I hit the 21* Sonartec MD Transition Club (big name for Old Man Stick) today. 234 yds. total with 3 yards of roll. It had a UST IROD Shaft in it. Very nice looking. I feel so friggin old hitting it tho. But DANG it was hot. I tried a 17* Clev. and a 16* Taylor. Neither I hit near that sonartec. I used to hit a 3 iron nice and high. Now I have changed my swing plane and things don't go as high as they used to. (They have Viagra for clubs? Oh yeah...there called Hybrids) :rofl

This sonartec is apparently what was n the Bag of the Open Champion last year. Had good reviews. Nick Price is tour player for them alog with a few others. And the way I hit it it was a nice club. I'm thinking the 19 , 21 , 23 degree clubs and take the 3 and 4 irons out. I didnt have a 2 iron anyway. That will make 14 in da bag.

And No..Not sponsored by Cleveland. I will say this tho. Vijay is really my favorite tour player. His work ethic on the game is something I really admire. I hope he keeps that #1 spot for a long time. Phil and Ernie I really like. And that Retief Goosan. OMG that swing of his is NICE.

I'm gonna give the new Michelob Amature Tour a try. They have a few loacal events and stuff here. See how my game holds up after a few years off. Maybe the Senior Tour someday. I got 8 years to get ready so you never know.

Anyway..thanks for the advice Stang ,and BEST OF LUCK IN YOUR QUEST BUD. I HOPE YOU PLAY WELL and MAKE SOME BUCKS:aok

Hey, don't worry about that.  Vijay has a 9 wood in the bag.  A hybrid is way more manly than a ladies wood  :D

Ladies wood:rofl

When I was younger and playing 6 days a week and hitting balls every day and night , I found this ladies 3 wood. It was a Hogan (back in the old days of persimmon) with a ladies shaft in it. I used to hit that thing a mile. I mean I have NO idea why but it was a hot MOFO. For the time anyway.

reminded me of that. :lol

How old are you if you don't mind..and My email is in my sig. Email me a link to that tour and i'll keep up with ya.:)

The shaft was probably so wippy that it was like cracking a rat tail on something when you hit the ball.  SMACK!

Post by: streetstang on February 02, 2005, 10:07:32 PM
I pitched an awsome wedge. Very mean. It was a hpyer hybrid 9 iron. My par went down along with my disability and handicap. I was very impressed with the shafts willingness to flex to my needs.
The angle of the head was and still is 14 degrees but that can all be adjusted with the fully modulating shank. I feel to drive a nice wedge its all about the modulation of the shank. A hybrid shank no less

Ah golf and aircraft. My Father always said I was good enough to be a pro. But I wasn't interested, no I wanted to be a pilot.  Great move that as it turned out.:(  I could be on the tour now with my own jet !
I was a bit inconsistent though. My favourite shot was when  I sliced a shot so badly it ended up behind me and further away and in the rough.  But from there I dropped it in the hole for a birdie
:aok . Maybe I'm just a lucky golfer.

From a long time greenskeepers perspective;

Preferred lie does not mean picking up the ball no matter where it lands and putting it where you wish it would have landed.

Mulligans are for...well mulligans.

Playing two balls is stealing a round of golf...play your 1st ball then get the hell outta the way so I can make YOUR course pretty and playable.

The 3 to 10 seconds a maintenece person makes you wait is nothing compared to the 27 practice swings you take before addressing the ball.

Got a million more but out of time, so swing away you heros of the little white ball, and don't forget when you get back to the clubhouse to whine; the greens are too green, the roughs are too rough and the sand is too sandy. Hmmm, sounds kinda like AH don't it.

LOL, if you are like most greenskeepers I know, you'd rather no one ever played your course so it would be a perfect tribute to the game.  All we players do is come out and mess up all the fine work you guys just got done working on.

Shank = Snap Fade

Greens Keepers = Highly Paid Grass Growers who can mow pretty lines.:rofl J/K

They have an air Show every year in the town where the Course I play at is. Small airport but a big show. F4U's P51 Zeke and a few others. Couple Bombers as well , and 1 year an f15. When he broke windows out of houses for 3 days...they pretty much told them no more of that.

It is great because they all fly RIGHT over the course. I enjoy watching em during the couple days before the show and during.

trying to decide which to keep sell

my original clubs bought in '97 (played for about a year very infrequently then pretty much put it aside til now)

king cobra oversize reg flex

dad brought down his 1set (used for one year before eh got some taylormades) of hogan apex ('94) senior flex

and just bought a set of adams tight lies stiff shaft... picked em up cheaply (new, via ebay)

as for drivers, i have a variety i'm trying out to see what works for me:

original KC Ti 10.5 reg
adams 363 8.0 stiff
adams 410 8.5 stiff
adams 460 9.0 stiff
mchenry metals 8.0 stiff

for woods, i love the adams original 16 deg tight lies and have their 13 deg strong 3 ST.

putter - using a ram given to me by father when i got original set of cobras, just bought a nike OZ mallet... eyeballing a Futura on evilbay...

i guess in another year or so i'll have a better idea of what works for me and eventually upgrade to some snazzy ego stroking sticks in the $1,000 range  :p

i guess my clubs are like a p-40 to ya'll's la7's

the only thing i'm consistent with right now is my inconsistency.

Shane,

Do you spend any time on the range?
Your Clubs are fine.
I recomend looking at an Oversized Driver. 400cc

In regards to the range...Youll learn how to hit it there...scoring is for the golf course. Just from speaking from expierance , pounding golf balls on the range will help you more in the long run. Playing Golf is fun. But when you learn to hit it in a consistant way , no matter a fade , draw , whatever , Golf is even MORE fun.
Title: I saw something wicked cool today
Post by: Shane on February 04, 2005, 09:44:23 PM
oh i spend some time on the range, should do more.

golf is a sport that requires a huge amount of coordination and i'm still working out the mechanics of my swing.  for example with the cobras i'd as often as not push (as opposed to a simple slice) my shots.  when trying out the hogans i found it forced me to slow my swing down somewhat and when i hit them sweet it'd come out a slight draw.  just got the adams the otehr day and haven't had the chance to try em out with the semi-crappy weather we're having.

i had an 8.5 cobra driver that i was starting to hit pretty well, then all of a sudden i was all over the place with it. last saturday at river crossing usingf the free range to warm up i found out why my shots were so inconsistent - the damn shaft broke at the head and sent it about 40 yds down range. :eek  which is why i picked up the 3 new drivers at very decent price off ebay to test out.

i always felt the oversized drivers were almost like cheating, but hey, as long as they're legal wtf, i'll give 'em a try. :aok

on a good day i'll be either hot with my driver *or* my irons, and hot with my chipping *or* my putter. someday i'll put it all together i imagine.
Title: I saw something wicked cool today
Post by: RedTop on February 04, 2005, 09:56:58 PM
Cobras have a bit more offset than the Hogans would I imagine. That would explain why things change when hitting em. Also the Hogans will be a bit more difficult on the miss hits.

Drivers are so fickle. I swear at times I can hity mine a mile. Other days it wont go for crap. Who knows.

Heres the most important thing you need to remember when shopping for clubs. The SHAFT is the most important part of the Golf Club. Once you find the head design you like to look at no matter the offset or not. One that is pleasing to look at all the time , then the shaft is the motor. It is what becomes IMO the most important part of the club. Heads will be hads as long as you like to look at em. But the wrong shaft and the head dont matter.

I would suggest , that if you want to be serious and get better or really better ,to go get fitted. By that I mean , go to a Golf Shp and get them to get you the lie angle you need. Also get them to check your club head speed. Different shafts do different things.

Mid-Kick Shafts , Higher-Kick Shafts , Low-kick shafts. Senior Flex , Regular Flex , Stiff Fless , X-tra Stiff flex. Graphite , Rifle , Stepped. Combinations af each. Its mind boggleing at times.

Get with a Ping Rep. (Even if you dont want pings) and see what you lie angle is. See what shaft would best suit you according to your swing speed and ball flight. ALSO see what shaft will get you the ball flight you desire for trajectory. High , low. High long irons and lower short irons. Yadda Yadda Yadda. I think you get the point.

This will help you in your buying efforst and what things to look for when buying.
